CHAPTER 1 The Mate Who Rejected Me

1560 Words
The moment the Moon chose Alpha Kael Draven as my mate, I knew my life was over. Elara Veyne stood barefoot in the center of Blackthorn's ceremonial hall, surrounded by hundreds of wolves dressed in black and silver. The enormous windows were open to the night, allowing cold moonlight to spill across the stone floor, but she barely felt the chill beneath her feet because every instinct inside her was screaming. The Moon-Bonding ceremony was supposed to be the one night of her life when she finally stopped being the pack's disappointment. Instead, the ancient silver flame burning above the altar had turned toward the man she had spent six years trying not to love. Alpha Kael Draven stood at the opposite end of the hall. Tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed in the ceremonial black of the Alpha bloodline, he looked exactly as he always did—untouchable, controlled, and impossible to read. His dark hair was swept away from his forehead, his expression carved into its usual coldness, but Elara could see the tension in his jaw even from across the hall. Then the silver flame descended. It struck Elara's chest first. A gasp tore through the crowd. Heat exploded beneath her ribs, racing through her veins so violently that her knees nearly buckled. She grabbed the fabric of her dress, fighting to remain standing as a glowing silver mark appeared against her skin. Across the hall, Kael staggered. For the first time in six years, Elara saw something crack through his composure. His eyes widened. His wolf had recognized her. The realization moved through the crowd like fire through dry grass. "Impossible." "Alpha Kael?" "Is that the mate bond?" "With her?" Elara heard the whispers, but none of them mattered. She could barely breathe. Her heart hammered against her ribs as the bond stretched between them, invisible but unmistakable. Every wolf possessed an instinct for their mate, and Elara had spent countless nights wondering what it would feel like when hers finally found her. She had imagined warmth. Acceptance. Maybe even love. She had never imagined looking across a crowded hall and finding the one person she had secretly loved since she was sixteen. Kael's gaze remained locked on hers. For one fragile second, Elara forgot everything else. She remembered the first time she had seen him shift beneath the winter moon, the first time he had spoken to her without looking at her like she was beneath him, and the night he had quietly left medicine outside her door when she had injured her ankle. She had been foolish enough to treasure those moments. Maybe they had meant something after all. Her lips parted. "Kael..." His expression changed. Whatever she saw in his eyes made the warmth in her chest turn cold. Fear. Not happiness. Not surprise. Fear. Kael stepped forward. The crowd fell silent. Every wolf in the hall watched as their Alpha approached the woman the Moon had apparently chosen for him. Elara's heartbeat grew louder with every step he took. When Kael stopped in front of her, he was close enough for her to smell the cedar and winter air clinging to his clothes. His eyes dropped briefly to the glowing mark on her chest before returning to her face. "Say it," Elder Lucien commanded from beside the altar. Kael did not move. The old elder's voice hardened. "Alpha." Something passed through Kael's eyes. Then he looked directly at Elara. "I reject you." The words struck harder than any physical blow. For a moment, Elara didn't understand them. The hall remained silent. Even the wolves who had been whispering moments earlier seemed afraid to breathe. Elara stared at him. "What?" Kael's jaw tightened. "I reject you as my mate." A strange sound escaped her throat, somewhere between a laugh and a breath. "You can't." "I can." "But the Moon chose us." "I know." His answer was so quiet that it hurt more than if he had shouted. Elara felt the bond between them twist. Pain tore through her chest. She folded one hand over her heart, trying to steady herself, but the movement only made the silver mark burn hotter. Her eyes watered, and she refused to let the tears fall. Not here. Not in front of them. She had spent her entire life being watched for weakness. She would not give them another reason to laugh. "Why?" she whispered. Kael didn't answer. "Look at me and tell me why." His eyes met hers. Something inside him flinched. That should have comforted her. Instead, it made her angrier. "You wanted the answer," he said quietly. "Now you have it." "No." Elara shook her head. "That's not an answer." A murmur moved through the crowd. Someone laughed. It was soft, but Elara heard it. She turned toward the sound and saw Selene Ardent standing among the Beta family's attendants, one delicate hand covering her mouth. The satisfaction in her eyes was impossible to miss. Selene had spent years waiting for this moment. Elara turned back to Kael. "Is this because I'm weak?" Kael's expression hardened. "Elara—" "Because I can't shift?" Her voice trembled despite her efforts. "Because my wolf has never spoken to me? Because my mother was branded a traitor? Because everyone in this pack thinks I'm cursed?" "Enough." Kael's command carried the force of his Alpha authority. Elara's body reacted instinctively. Her knees weakened. She caught herself before she fell. The humiliation burned hotter than the pain in her chest. Kael's eyes flickered with regret. Elara saw it. And somehow that hurt even more. "If you are going to reject me," she whispered, "at least have the courage to tell me what you're really afraid of." Kael went completely still. For the first time, Elara knew she had struck something real. His eyes darkened. Then Elder Lucien stepped forward. "That is enough." The old elder raised his hand, and several guards moved toward Elara. She stared at them. "Why are they coming toward me?" No one answered. The guards stopped several feet away. Lucien looked at Kael. Then at Elara. "The ceremony is concluded." Elara's stomach tightened. "Why?" Lucien's face revealed nothing. "Because the Moon has made its decision." A cold silence followed. Then he added, "And so has the council." Elara looked around the hall. The pack members who had spent years calling her defective were no longer looking at her with amusement. They were afraid. She didn't understand why. She looked at Kael. He wasn't looking at her anymore. His attention was fixed on the guards. "Lucien," he said. The elder turned. "Take her to the eastern tower." Elara's blood ran cold. "The eastern tower?" Nobody had been imprisoned there in years. It was an old stone structure built into the mountain, once used for dangerous rogues and supernatural prisoners. She took a step backward. "What did I do?" Lucien's expression remained calm. "Nothing yet." Those two words made the entire hall seem colder. Elara's breath caught. "Then why are you imprisoning me?" Lucien looked at the silver mark glowing against her skin. "Because we need to determine whether your mother's blood has awakened in you." The world seemed to stop. Elara stared at him. "My mother's blood?" A murmur erupted through the hall. Kael's head snapped toward his uncle. "Lucien." There was warning in his voice now. The elder ignored him. Elara's fingers curled into fists. "My mother is dead." "No," Lucien said. His gaze settled on her with something that looked almost like pity. "Your mother was a traitor." The word struck an old wound. Elara had heard it since childhood. Traitor. Witch. Blood-born. Murderer. She had learned to pretend the names did not matter. But tonight, standing beneath the Moon with Kael's rejection still burning through her veins, they suddenly felt different. Like pieces of a story she had never been allowed to hear. "What does my mother have to do with my mate bond?" Lucien smiled. It was the wrong expression. Not kindness. Not sympathy. Satisfaction. "Everything." The silver mark on Elara's chest suddenly burned. She gasped. Something moved beneath her skin. Her vision blurred. Then a voice whispered inside her head. Wake up. Elara froze. Her breath stopped. She knew that voice. She had heard it only in dreams. A voice that had haunted her since childhood. A voice she had always believed belonged to someone else. Elara. Her heart slammed against her ribs. No. It couldn't be. She closed her eyes. The voice came again, clearer this time. They lied to you. Elara opened her eyes. Across the hall, Kael was staring at her. His face had gone pale. He could hear something. Not the voice itself. But the change. The guards suddenly stepped backward. One of them whispered, "Alpha..." Kael didn't respond. His eyes were fixed on the mark beneath Elara's skin. The silver glow was changing. It was darkening. Silver became crimson. A collective gasp swept through the hall. Elara stared down at her chest as a thin red line spread across the glowing mark like blood moving through cracked glass. Her entire body went cold. Then the voice inside her whispered one final sentence. They were never afraid of your mother. The crimson light flared. They were afraid of you. And somewhere deep inside Elara's soul, something ancient opened its eyes.
