Hypnotherapy should always be a last resort, something psychiatrists used when conventional therapy did not yield results. If time permitted, Dan would have preferred to apply those methods to help Moses regain his lost memories. But with Malcolm Industries forcing his hand by prompting him to release Moses into his care, Dan had no other alternative.
