CHAPTER FIVE: THE ROGUE ALPHA

Mira didn’t plan to leave. That was the truth she kept telling herself as she stepped past the edge of the pack’s territory. She had stood by her window for a long time, fighting the pull, trying to ignore it. But the bond didn’t fade. It stayed there, steady and patient, like it knew she would give in eventually. And she did. Now the forest stretched around her, dark and quiet. The sounds of the ceremony were gone, replaced by the soft crunch of leaves under her feet and the distant call of night creatures. Mira walked slowly at first, her eyes scanning her surroundings. “This is a bad idea,” she muttered under her breath. But her feet didn’t stop moving. The bond guided her. Every step felt certain, like she already knew where she was going, even if her mind didn’t. The deeper she went into the forest, the stronger the feeling became. It wrapped around her chest, not painful, but heavy. Present. Real. Mira swallowed, her fingers brushing lightly against her arm as a strange warmth spread through her. “This isn’t normal…” she whispered. In her first life, the bond had never felt like this. It had never pulled her away from safety… away from everything she knew. A twig snapped somewhere ahead. Mira froze. Her body tensed immediately, instincts kicking in. Her senses sharpened as she listened carefully. She wasn’t alone. The air shifted. That was the only way she could describe it. Something about it changed, like a quiet warning. Then— The bond surged. Mira gasped softly, her hand pressing against her chest as her heart slammed hard against her ribs. “He’s close…” The thought came without effort. She didn’t know how, but she knew. Mira took a careful step forward, her breathing slower now, more controlled. “Who are you…?” she whispered. The forest seemed to hold its breath. Then she saw him. He stood between the trees, partially hidden in the shadows, like he belonged there. Tall. Still. Watching. Mira stopped instantly. Her breath caught in her throat. The bond reacted again, stronger than ever. Her eyes slowly lifted to meet his. And everything went quiet. For a second, neither of them moved. Neither of them spoke. They just stared at each other. He stepped forward slightly, enough for the moonlight to touch his face. Mira felt it again. That shift. That undeniable pull. Mate. Her lips parted, but no words came out. He looked… nothing like Rhys. Older. Much older. His presence alone was enough to make the air feel heavier. His shoulders were broad, his posture straight, but there was something else about him. Something hard. Something cold. His face was calm, but his eyes… his eyes held too much. Too much pain. Too much experience. And something sharp. Something dangerous. Mira swallowed slowly, her heart racing. “You…” The word slipped out before she could stop it. His gaze darkened slightly. He took another step forward. “Who are you?” His voice was low, steady, but there was an edge to it. Mira felt it in her chest. That voice alone carried authority. Power. “I…” She hesitated, suddenly unsure. “My name is Mira.” His expression didn’t change, but his eyes stayed locked on her like he was trying to see through her. “Mira,” he repeated slowly. The bond pulsed again between them. Stronger. Clearer. His jaw tightened. “No…” he said under his breath, almost like he didn’t believe it. Mira frowned slightly. “What do you mean ‘no’?” He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, his gaze dropped for a brief second, then returned to her face. “This shouldn’t be happening,” he said. Her chest tightened. “I could say the same thing,” Mira replied quietly. Silence fell again. The bond didn’t fade. If anything, it grew stronger the longer they stood there. Mira took a small step forward without realizing it. The moment she did, his body tensed. “Stop,” he said sharply. She froze. His voice wasn’t loud, but it carried enough force to make her listen. “Don’t come any closer.” Mira blinked, confused. “Why?” His eyes flickered briefly, then hardened again. “Because you don’t belong here.” Something about those words hit deeper than it should have. Mira straightened slightly. “And where exactly do I belong?” He didn’t hesitate. “With your pack.” Mira let out a small breath. “You already know where I’m from.” “It’s obvious,” he said. “I can smell it.” That made sense. Wolves always knew. Mira studied him more carefully now. “And you?” A pause. Then, “No one you need to know.” Mira almost laughed at that. “That’s funny. Because I think I do.” His gaze sharpened. The bond pulsed again, stronger this time, making both of them react. Mira pressed her hand against her chest again, her breathing uneven. “You feel it too.” It wasn’t a question. He didn’t deny it. But he didn’t accept it either. His jaw tightened, his eyes hard. “It doesn’t matter.” “It does,” Mira said quietly. “No,” he replied firmly. “It doesn’t.” Mira frowned, frustration rising slightly. “You can’t just ignore it.” “I can,” he said. “And I will.” The words were cold. Final. But the bond between them said otherwise. Mira shook her head slowly. “Why?” For the first time, something shifted in his expression. Not much. But enough. “Because I don’t want a mate,” he said. The honesty in his voice caught her off guard. Mira stared at him. “That’s not how it works.” “It is for me.” Silence stretched between them again. Mira took a slow breath, then asked, “What’s your name?” He didn’t answer right away. But after a moment, he said, “Caden.” The name hit her like a sudden memory. Her eyes widened slightly. Caden. The exiled heir. Rhys’ older brother. The one no one talked about. The one who was cast out years ago. “You’re…” she started, then stopped. He noticed. “What?” he asked, his tone sharper now. Mira shook her head slightly. “Nothing.” But her mind was already racing. In her first life, she had never met him. Never even seen him. He wasn’t part of her story. And yet… here he was. Her mate. The bond pulsed again, stronger than ever, as if confirming it. Mira let out a slow breath, her gaze steady on him. “This is my second chance…” she thought quietly. Not Rhys. Not the past. Something different. Something new. Caden watched her closely, his expression unreadable. “You should go back.” Mira didn’t move. “You don’t mean that,” she said softly. His eyes narrowed slightly. “I do.” “No,” she replied. “You’re just trying to convince yourself.” That seemed to hit something. His jaw tightened again. “You don’t know anything about me,” he said. Mira held his gaze. “Maybe not. But I know what this is.” The bond pulsed again between them. Stronger. Clearer. Unavoidable. Caden looked away first. And that alone told her everything. Mira’s heart beat steadily now, not from fear, but from something else. Something stronger. “This time…” she thought, her fingers curling slightly at her side, “I won’t make the same mistake.” Because this time… She wouldn’t choose wrong.
