The atmosphere in the grand pavilion was suffocating. The managing director from New York, Marcus Vance, had flown in early to personally oversee what he assumed would be a forced surrender by the Mauritian trustees. He sat at the head of the long mahogany table, smugly tapping a gold pen against his tablet.
Julian stood near the entrance, his arms crossed, his face a mask of absolute stone. He was only there to officially hand over the formal withdrawal papers on behalf of the family estate. He didn't look at Alisha when she walked in.
Alisha didn't sit down. She remained standing at the foot of the table, dressed in her sharp corporate cream suit, though her heart was pounding a frantic, chaotic rhythm against her ribs. She looked at Marcus, then turned her gaze directly to Julian. He remained fiercely detached, but she could see the tight tension in his jaw.
"Ms. Alisha," Marcus said, his voice dripping with condescension. "Let's get this wrapped up. Present the amended terms to the trustees so we can sign and get on the evening flight."
"There won't be an amended signing, Marcus," Alisha said, her voice echoing clearly across the high-ceilinged room.
Marcus frowned, his pen stopping. "Excuse me?"
Alisha reached into her portfolio and slid a single, printed document across the table. It wasn't the revised contract. It was her formal, immediate resignation.
"I am resigning from the firm, effective immediately," Alisha announced, her voice gaining strength with every word. She turned her back on Marcus entirely, facing Julian and the lead trustee. "And I am officially advising the estate not to sign any contract presented by this company. The financial leak that occurred yesterday was a bad-faith corporate strategy orchestrated by headquarters to manipulate your position. I had no part in it, but I refuse to let my name or my career be used to exploit this island."
A heavy, stunned silence fell over the pavilion. Marcus stood up, his face purple with rage. "Alisha, you are destroying your career! You'll never work in luxury hospitality again."
"Then I'll build something new," she said softly, her eyes locked onto Julian’s. For the first time since yesterday, the icy barrier in his blue eyes cracked, replaced by absolute shock—and a sudden, burning warmth.
Without waiting for Marcus to respond, Alisha turned on her heel and walked out of the pavilion, leaving the corporate world, the deadlines, and her meticulously planned life behind her.
An hour later, Alisha stood on the edge of the secluded beach, the exact spot where they had watched the sunset on her very first night. The sky was shifting into a brilliant cascade of gold and amber, casting a warm glow across the shoreline, just like the iconic image on the book's cover. She had changed out of her corporate attire into a simple, flowing sun dress. The ocean breeze caught the fabric, and for the first time in years, she felt like she could breathe.
"You're a very difficult woman to keep track of," a low, familiar voice murmured behind her.
Alisha turned around. Julian was walking down the sandy slope toward her, his linen shirt sleeves rolled up, his gaze intense and unyielding. The anger from the morning was completely gone, replaced by a raw, naked vulnerability.
"Julian," she whispered. "I needed to make things right."
"You threw away your entire career," he said, stopping just inches from her, his breath mingling with hers in the warm tropical air. "Why?"
"Because my career didn't matter if it meant losing the only real thing I've found in years," Alisha said, her eyes welling with tears. "I didn't want the corporate deal, Julian. I wanted this. I wanted you."
Julian let out a low, rough sigh, the last of his defenses crumbling entirely. He reached out, his strong hands catching her waist and pulling her flush against his chest. "I'm sorry I doubted you," he murmured against her hair. "The thought of losing you... of you leaving on that plane... it tore me apart."
"I'm not going anywhere," she promised, anchoring her fingers into his hair.
When his mouth claimed hers, the kiss was no longer driven by desperation or deadlines. It was a slow, deep, and passionate promise of a new beginning. The tropical tide lapped gently at their ankles, the warm golden light of the Mauritian sunset wrapping them in a private sanctuary.
"The trustees are going to run the resort independently now," Julian whispered against her lips, his hands sliding up her back, sending a wave of intense heat through her veins. "They’re going to need a brilliant, independent director to manage it. Someone who knows how to build things that last."
Alisha smiled, her heart finally finding its perfect rhythm. "I think I know just the person. But she comes as a package deal with a cultural consultant."
"That," Julian growled softly, leaning down to kiss her again, "can absolutely be arranged."
