PEARL January 1919 As in the wake of the War Between the States, prosperity came to us in the aftermath of what had come to be known as the Great War. When will men learn there is nothing great about war? My renderings of my Peter as a soldier drew more and more people to the gallery and my work sold for more and faster than it ever had, though I would not put on display or sell those of him as the man I knew before he became a soldier, before he died as one. I might be an artist but not a foolish one. I plied my brush as often and as quickly as I could, using the pictures from the newspapers as my guide, the ones of the soldiers in “glorious” battle, the ones of them marching home in victory.
