GINEVRA The bell chimed. From the hill just to the west, the church spire rose up into the sky. The Baptist church had a steeple of five floors. Its bell rang and rang; it rang twelve times. Midday. Midday and still without any sight of Pearl and Mary. Others from Newport had arrived on the later ferry. I asked every one of them but not a one had a word of her, of them, not a sight of them either. I knew then that what I felt was true… something was wrong. Something had happened. I put down my sign and walked off the line. “Where are you going, Ginevra?” Sarah Eddy called out to me. “I"m going to find Pearl,” I said, not loud enough for any to hear. I just kept walking until I got to the ferry dock.
