Chapter 54

1451 Words

GINEVRA Somehow I caught myself, somehow I kept my body from crashing on the floor after wriggling through the half-opened window. I couldn"t get it any further open. I almost fell to the ground getting it even halfway open. A loud thump on the floor and anything I tried to do for Pearl would be quickly undone. With my hands on the floor, my legs still half out the window, I crept slowly further through on my palms. When only my toes remained outside, I brought first one foot in and then the other, slowly placing them on the floor. For the shortest of moments, I stood in silent gratitude. Then I took a step. The thud of my heel upon wood sounded like the clang of a fire carriage bell. I stopped again. Didn"t move again. Waiting, sure Mabel had heard it. Excruciating seconds ticked by.
