The Last Perfect Day

752 Words
Ollie had always known his heart wasn’t strong. The doctor had warned him years ago—*"At your size, every day is a gamble"*—but back then, the words had rolled off him like rain on pavement. What did it matter? His life had been a series of small, lonely rooms, of half-empty takeout containers and silence. But now, there was Shadow. Shadow, who sprawled across the bed like he owned it, who stole socks and hid them like treasures, who pressed his cold nose against Ollie’s cheek when he sensed a nightmare coming. Shadow, who made Ollie want to wake up tomorrow. And so, on the morning of their one-year anniversary (marked on Ollie’s wall calendar with a lopsided dog bone doodle), Ollie decided to make it *count.* --- ### **The Butcher’s Surprise** He woke early, slipping out of bed while Shadow still snored into the pillow. The air outside was crisp, winter clinging to the edges of spring, but Ollie barely felt the chill. He walked with purpose to the butcher shop, where Mr. Callahan—a gruff man with a soft spot for strays—eyed him as he stepped inside. *“You lost, son?”* *“No, sir,”* Ollie said, puffing slightly from the walk. *“I need your best ribeye.”* Mr. Callahan raised an eyebrow but didn’t comment. He pulled a thick, marbled cut from the case and wrapped it in paper. *“Special occasion?”* *“Yeah,”* Ollie said, smiling. *“Family anniversary.”* --- ### **The Collar** Next stop: the pet store. Ollie had been saving for weeks, squirreling away loose change in an old coffee tin. The collar he wanted was simple—black leather with a brass nameplate. *“What should we engrave?”* the clerk asked. Ollie didn’t hesitate. *“Shadow. And underneath… ‘Best Friend.’”* When he fastened it around Shadow’s neck later that morning, the dog pranced in front of the cracked bathroom mirror, turning his head to admire himself. Ollie laughed until his sides hurt. --- ### **The Market Adventure** The holiday market was in full swing when they arrived—strings of lights crisscrossing the square, stalls packed with handmade goods and steaming food. Shadow trotted beside him, head high, his new collar gleaming under the sun. Then, chaos. A runaway terrier bolted past, trailing its leash, and Shadow—ever the protector—took off after it. Ollie wheezed, giving chase as the two dogs weaved through the crowd, knocking over a display of wooden toys and sending a tower of apples tumbling from a vendor’s cart. *“Shadow!* Stop—*oh God—”* Ollie gasped, skidding to a halt as Shadow cornered the terrier near a fountain. Instead of snarling, though, Shadow simply… sat. The smaller dog blinked, then tentatively licked his nose. The crowd erupted in applause. A little girl with pigtails clapped her hands. *“Your dog is a hero!”* Ollie, bent double and panting, could only nod. --- ### **The Storm** They were halfway home when the sky opened up—a sudden, violent downpour that sent people scrambling for cover. Ollie fumbled with his keys, hands shaking from the cold, but the lock stuck. Again. Shadow whined, pressing close as rain soaked them both. Then—*a crack.* Lightning split the sky, and the power lines above them hissed. The streetlights flickered, then died. *“Oh, come on,”* Ollie muttered. Inside, the apartment was dark. The electricity had been shut off (again), but Ollie didn’t care. He lit the emergency candles, their glow painting the walls in warm, dancing light. --- ### **The Feast** The steak sizzled in the pan, its rich smell filling the room. Shadow watched, drooling, as Ollie plated it—half for him, half for the dog. They ate by candlelight, Shadow l*****g his chops as Ollie hummed an old song his mother used to sing. Outside, the storm raged on, but here, in their little haven, the world felt soft. Safe. Ollie set his plate aside and sank to the floor beside Shadow, running his fingers through the dog’s damp fur. *“You’re my best friend,”* he whispered. Shadow’s tail thumped once. Twice. Then he rested his head on Ollie’s knee and sighed, content. It was the last perfect day. And it was enough.
