CHAPTER 3: The Truth Unfolds

For a brief while, Kira was unable to distinguish between being awake and dreaming due to the dense dust in the air. Her body hurt as if the weight of the wreckage had crushed it. Her senses gradually came back, and she understood she wasn't dead. She was having trouble breathing, her chest heaving. "Kira!" Marcus spoke in a terrified tone. He knelt down next to her and helped her sit down. "Are you alright?" She mumbled, "I think so," even though every muscle in her body ached to move. She flinched and cast a hazy glance about. They had descended from a much smaller area into a much larger cavern. The floor was covered in broken stone and jagged boulders, but her attention was drawn to something else. The illumination. Deeper down the tunnel, a dim, pulsating illumination created strange shadows around the stone walls. Kira felt her heart quicken. They weren't buried by the island. It had taken them further, exposing more mysteries. She rose slowly, her legs trembling but still working. "We tumbled, but we escaped unburied," Kira murmured, her thoughts racing. "This wasn't an accident at all," Marcus scowled, trembling even more. "Explain what you mean." "I believe the island intended for us to be here," she said, keeping her eyes fixed on the illuminated corridor. Her body had an odd feeling, like the island's spirit was directing her through her veins. She realized she had to follow her intuition. Kira started toward the passage without waiting for a reply. As they got closer, the light began to flicker and intensify, and the shadows appeared to move and change on their own. They had something waiting for them. Kira walked quickly, her steps resonating across the large room. Marcus trailed closely behind, clearly nervous, but he said nothing and observed her warily. Deeper into the island, the channel ahead gleamed faintly, calling them on. "This location... With a quick glance around, Marcus mumbled, "It's not natural." His voice sounded terrified and strained. "What if we're about to step into a trap?" Kira took a while to respond. The throbbing energy that seemed to resonate in the air around them consumed too much of her thoughts. She had the impression that the passage's walls were alive and that the island was directing her toward something she had to see. Was it a trap, though? Or was it something different altogether? Kira finally stated, "I don't think it's a trap," in a forceful voice. "I believe it's something we were destined to discover." Marcus gave a headshake. "Intended to locate? Kira, be careful on this island. You're behaving in an— With a sharper-than-intended tone, Kira snapped, "I'm acting like I know what I'm doing." It wasn't our intention to flee here. This is the only way to obtain the answers we came for. Marcus fell silent, but it was clear he was worried. It was obvious that Kira felt drawn to him, even though she knew he didn't understand. Now that she was so close to accomplishing something significant, she was powerless to go back. The tunnel led to a vast subterranean room with a ceiling that vanished into darkness. With a peculiar aura that drew them in, a huge stone pedestal loomed in the center. The air was heavy with power, and symbols etched into the stone walls pulsed softly. "What is this location?" Astonished, Marcus uttered a whisper. With a thumping heart, Kira moved forward. It belongs to me. A voice spoke out from the darkness said, "You shouldn't have come," as she stretched out to touch the glowing pedestal. Just inches away from the shimmering stone, Kira's hand froze in midair. Her heart leaped into her throat as she abruptly turned. It was the same strong, authoritative tone of voice that had reverberated through the wreckage above; it was unmistakable. At the chamber's edge, a tall, darkly shrouded man rose out of the shadows, and his presence was felt. With open eyes, Marcus stepped back. Who in the world is that? Kira turned to face the stranger, her heart racing. She asked, her voice firm despite the panic twisting in her gut, "Who are you?" The man moved forward, the shadows still covering his face. "Kira, I told you. You've been on my mind. She gasped for air. The way he pronounced her name, it sounded as though he had known her for years. But in all her life, she had never seen him before. Had she? She couldn't quite identify it, but there was something about him that felt familiar. Kira's heartbeat accelerated as she responded, "I don't understand." "Awaiting my arrival? Why not? The man maintained a fixed gaze. "because you are not who you believe yourself to be. You've lost sight of your true identity and past self. However, the island is not forgetful. And I also do. Her chest throbbed with her heart. The island—do you recall? Though it felt ridiculous, she couldn't ignore the feeling that she was starting to recognize. The weird tug she felt and the sights she saw were related. "Explain what you mean." Kira inquired, her tone just audible above a hushe. The man took a step forward, his eyes penetrating. "The Luna Queen of the Lunari Kingdom is you, Lyra." The man's remarks struck Kira like a tidal wave, tipping her world off balance. Queen Luna? That was not feasible. However, something shifted within her, and she understood that it wasn't at all impossible. An almost electric tension permeated the cavern as the words hung in the air. As Kira attempted to digest what the stranger had just said, her heart was racing and her thoughts racing. Queen Luna? It was nonsensical. It is not possible. However, a long-buried part of her sparked something within of her that rang true with his words. The odd power she felt pulsing through her veins and the visions she'd experienced all pointed to the same impossibly impossible reality. "I'm not... Kira shook her head and muttered, "I don't remember any of this. Stepping back, she felt the weight of the discovery quiver her legs. The man's demeanor stayed strong, but his eyes relaxed. You've been leading a life that wasn't intended for you, which is why. The island hasn't forgotten who you are, even though you have. The island has been anticipating your return and remembers you. With a spinning mind, Kira shook her head. "I don't get it." With a peculiar sort of grief in his voice, the man answered gently, "You will." But Kira, you have to have faith in yourself. Because you are this island's queen, you have the power and connection that it gives you. This location and its enchantment are yours. Kira was having trouble breathing. Gazing below, she saw that her hands were quivering with the same energy that appeared to emanate from the island itself. Was this her true identity? Was this the Luna Queen Lyra, really? The room filled with a strong, dazzling light as the symbols on the pedestal started to flash brighter before she could reply. Her senses were overtaken by the force, which gave her a strength she had never experienced before. Kira's eyesight became blurry as the light intensified, and she heard a quiet but distinct voice saying, "Remember who you are." With the light going out, Kira found herself standing in the middle of the room, her body shaking from the sudden surge of power. She was trying to make sense of all that had transpired, and her mind was racing. Was this the Luna Queen Lyra? But what on earth did that mean? And why was she unable to recall? The man moved nearer, his face solemn. "You need to get ready now that you know the truth." Kira's heart continued to race as she glanced up at him. "For what should I prepare?" "For war," he answered, warning in his voice. The foes of the Lunari Kingdom are awakening along with the island. Kira, they will come for you; they know who you are. As the last member of the Luna family, they will do whatever it takes to destroy you. Her throat congealed with breath. Enemies? War? It all felt like too much, too quickly. She arrived on this island in search of explanations, but instead she was thrown into the middle of an unfamiliar conflict. "Explain what you mean." Marcus stepped forward and demanded. Which adversaries? What conflict is it? The man maintained a fixed gaze. "Dark forces have been anticipating Kira's return and have been waiting for this moment." And now that she's conscious again, they will pursue her. Whether she's ready or not, the struggle for the Lunari Kingdom is about to start. Kira's mind was racing and her heart was pounding in her chest. Not prepared for this, she was. She was not a monarch. She had no option, though, a voice said from deep within. As he finished his sentence, the man's eyes grew gloomy. "Luna, the conflict is coming. Additionally, you need to be ready.
