Chapter Sixteen – Wait

344 Words
“Dylan! ¡Vámonos, bro!” The shout slammed into him like a punch. His heart dropped, heavy and sick, as if the sound itself was dragging him away from her. His hand curled into a fist inside his hoodie pocket, nails biting into his palm until they left marks. Every cell in his body wanted to yell Wait! — to beg the universe to stop, just for one more second. But his throat was locked tight, a knot of fear and desire. New York pulsed around them, uncaring. Taxi horns screamed like angry voices. A siren wailed somewhere far away, weaving in and out of the night. Neon lights spilled across the wet asphalt, glowing yellow and pink in their eyes like tiny barriers forcing them apart. Keisha’s breath hitched. Her chest rose and fell too quickly, as if she had been running though her legs hadn’t moved at all. A tremor rippled through her arms. Her mind screamed to reach for him, to grab his sleeve, to say don’t leave, but her body betrayed her. If he walks away now… maybe it means I was wrong. Maybe the thread was only in my head. She gripped the strap of her coat harder, knuckles whitening, as if she could hold herself together with just that piece of fabric. Dylan’s gaze clung to her, desperate, begging for an answer she wasn’t giving. His chest burned with everything he had never typed, never dared to say out loud. Memories of unsent messages flooded his mind—half-written confessions, jokes he erased, voice notes he never recorded. Words lived in his throat, pushing, fighting to break free. His lips parted. His pulse thundered in his ears so loud he almost couldn’t hear himself. “Keisha—” The call came again, louder this time, sharper, a voice tearing the fragile thread. “Dylan!” He flinched as though struck. The universe hung in the space between his urgency and her doubt. The city roared on, indifferent, its rhythm pulling them apart. But destiny whispered: not yet.
