A NIGHT TO REMEMBER

1200 Words
The "Young and Beautiful" floated gracefully through the magnificent ballroom. For a few precious seconds... It felt as though time itself had stopped. Lincoln and Octavia remained in each other's arms, neither eager to end the dance. His hand rested gently against her waist. Her delicate hand remained upon his shoulder while their fingers stayed intertwined. Neither of them noticed that every eye in the ballroom was fixed on them. Lincoln smiled softly. "You dance beautifully." Octavia let out a shy laugh. "I was afraid I would step on your feet." A quiet chuckle escaped him. "You haven't." She smiled. "Not yet." He laughed. "I suppose there's still time." She covered her mouth as she laughed, and the sound made Lincoln smile even more. For He couldn't remember the last time laughter had come so naturally. --- Around them, dozens of couples joined the dance floor. The orchestra continued playing while crystal chandeliers bathed the ballroom in golden light. Yet among all the elegant couples... Everyone's attention remained on one pair. Whispers travelled from one end of the hall to the other. "Look at them..." "They're beautiful together." "Have you ever seen His Highness smile like that?" "I haven't." "Who is that young lady?" "She's breathtaking." Several noblewomen exchanged disappointed glances. One sighed quietly. "I've dreamed of dancing with the prince since I was a little girl." Another folded her fan. "And tonight... he chose someone else." --- Upon the royal platform... Queen Hazel watched her son with gentle amusement. A warm smile appeared on her face. "I haven't seen that smile in years." Princess Arina smiled proudly. "I told you she was special." Queen Mirabel observed the crowd with calm elegance. "The nobles have already begun talking." King Alexza Nightfall remained silent. His sharp eyes slowly swept across the ballroom. Not because of the whispers. Because of something else. He had noticed what most humans never could. They were not the only ones watching. --- Hidden among the guests... Not everyone had come to celebrate. A beautifully dressed woman stood near one of the marble pillars. To the humans around her, she appeared to be nothing more than another noble guest. She quietly lowered her wine glass. "So..." "She has finally entered the palace." The man beside her nodded almost invisibly. "There is no mistake." A third guest slowly looked toward the center of the ballroom where Lincoln and Octavia danced. His expression immediately became cautious. "The Crown Prince..." The woman lowered her voice. "He hasn't left her side all evening." Another answered quietly, "Then we wait." "No one approaches while he is with her." A younger man frowned. "But we've finally found the girl." Before he could say another word... An older gentleman standing beside them spoke firmly. "Do you have a death wish?" The younger man immediately lowered his head. "My apologies." The elder looked toward Lincoln once more. Even from across the ballroom... No one dared test the prince. Not tonight. "Send word to the Elders." "They must know." One after another... They quietly disappeared into different parts of the palace, careful not to draw attention. --- Aurora suddenly stopped dancing. Damien Tyler immediately noticed. "What is it?" Aurora looked around uneasily. She placed a hand over her chest. "I..." She frowned. "I can feel them." Damien tilted his head. "Feel who?" "I don't know." She slowly turned, her eyes moving across the crowded ballroom. "There are powerful people here." "So many..." Her breathing became uneven. "Some feel warm..." "Some ancient..." "Some..." She swallowed. "...dangerous." Damien's expression remained calm. Although inside... His instincts were telling him exactly the same thing. "You should stay close to your friends tonight." Aurora looked at him curiously. "You sound serious." He smiled warmly, hiding the truth. "Just a feeling." She nodded slowly. "Mine too." --- Back on the dance floor... The music finally came to an end. Thunderous applause echoed throughout the ballroom. Lincoln reluctantly released Octavia's hand. He bowed politely. "Thank you." Octavia curtsied gracefully. "The pleasure was mine." Before another word could be spoken... A royal servant approached. "Your Highness." Lincoln turned. "His Majesty requests your presence." "I'll be there shortly." The servant bowed before leaving. Lincoln looked back at Octavia. "Duty has a habit of interrupting pleasant evenings." She smiled. "I suppose that's part of being a prince." He sighed dramatically. "I'm afraid it is." Both laughed softly. Neither wished to say goodbye. After a brief hesitation... Lincoln reached into the inside pocket of his royal coat. He carefully removed a beautifully crafted silver rose brooch—the symbol of the royal gardens. "I'd like you to have this." Octavia's eyes widened. "My Prince..." "I couldn't possibly accept something so valuable." His smile never faded. "I insist." Very gently... He pinned the silver rose onto her gown. "It suits you." Octavia looked down at it. Then back at him. "I'll treasure it." "I hope you will." Their eyes met once again. For a moment... Neither spoke. It felt as though the entire ballroom had disappeared. Finally... Lincoln stepped back. "I hope this won't be our last dance." She smiled shyly. "I hope not either." --- As Lincoln returned toward the royal platform... His eyes instinctively searched for Octavia one last time. She was still standing where he'd left her. Watching him. When their eyes met across the crowded ballroom... They smiled at each other. Neither noticed the silent figures watching from every corner. --- Hours passed. The celebration became even livelier. Music echoed through the palace. Guests laughed together. Some wandered through the moonlit gardens. Others admired the magnificent fountains. As dawn painted the horizon with soft shades of pink and gold, the Royal Ball slowly came to an end. Carriages lined the palace entrance. Guests began their journeys home. Some were exhausted. Some were still laughing. Some had enjoyed too much wine. Others quietly reflected on a night they would never forget. --- At the palace entrance... Aurora folded her arms and looked directly at Arina. "So..." "You've been hiding the fact that you're a princess all this time?" Arina rubbed the back of her neck sheepishly. "I wanted people to know me as Arina..." "Not as Princess Arina." Octavia smiled warmly. "You've always been our friend." Aurora pretended to think. "I suppose I can forgive you..." She grinned. "...if you buy us lunch for the next month." Arina burst into laughter. "Deal." The three friends hugged before climbing into their carriage. --- High above them... On the palace balcony... Lincoln stood alone. The morning breeze gently stirred his dark hair as he watched the carriage disappear beyond the palace gates. A small smile touched his lips. "So this..." He whispered to himself. "...is what it feels like." He remained there until the carriage vanished from sight. Far beyond the palace... Hidden within the ancient forest... A pair of crimson eyes slowly opened. A cold smile spread across unseen lips. "So..." "She has finally been found." The voice became little more than a whisper. "Watch her." "But remember..." "No one touches the girl..." "...while the Crown Prince is watching." The forest fell silent once more. And somewhere deep in the shadows... The hunt had quietly begun.
