THE JOURNEY BACK

890 Words
Three months passed like a beautiful dream. The holiday had come to an end. The morning sun rose gently over the Ashford home, bathing the quiet countryside in golden light. The scent of fresh bread drifted from the kitchen while birds sang cheerfully outside. Today... It was time to return to Eldoria Royal University. Octavia stood beside her bedroom window, taking one last look at the home she loved. Her emerald eyes wandered across the flower garden her mother cared for every morning. She smiled sadly. "I'll miss this place." A soft knock came at her door. "Come in." Her mother entered carrying a small basket. "I packed your favorite pastries." Octavia laughed softly. "Mom..." "You always do too much." Her mother gently tucked a loose curl behind her ear. "A mother can never do too much for her daughter." They embraced tightly. "I'll miss you." "I'll miss you too." --- Outside... Aurora was saying goodbye to her own family. Her younger brothers refused to let go of her. "Do you really have to leave?" Aurora smiled as she hugged them. "I have to finish my studies." "When will you come back?" "Soon." Her father placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. "We're proud of you." Her mother kissed her forehead. "Take care of yourself." "I promise." --- By midmorning... The carriage carrying Octavia and Aurora rolled away from their hometown. They waved until their families disappeared from sight. Neither spoke for several minutes. The silence wasn't uncomfortable. It was simply the silence of two hearts leaving home again. --- Day One The carriage followed winding roads through green valleys and peaceful villages. Travelers greeted one another warmly. Merchants crossed paths with farmers returning from the fields. That evening... They stayed at a comfortable inn surrounded by lavender gardens. As they prepared for bed... Aurora noticed Octavia staring out the window. "Thinking about someone?" Octavia smiled shyly. "...Maybe." Aurora laughed. "I knew it." --- Day Two Rain fell gently throughout the morning. The carriage continued through Silverwood Forest. Tiny drops sparkled on every leaf. The forest looked almost magical. Suddenly... A beautiful white deer stepped onto the road. The driver immediately stopped the horses. The magnificent creature looked directly at Octavia. Its silver eyes held an unusual intelligence. For a long moment... Neither moved. Then the deer quietly disappeared into the trees. Aurora smiled. "I've never seen one that close." Neither had Octavia. Yet something about the encounter stayed with her. --- Day Three The travelers crossed Stonebridge Valley once again. This time... The bustling bridge was filled with musicians entertaining passing merchants. Children danced. Laughter echoed through the valley. Aurora bought two sweet pastries from a nearby baker. She handed one to Octavia. "For someone who's been smiling a lot lately." Octavia rolled her eyes. "I smile normally." Aurora laughed. "If you say so." --- Day Four The towers of Eldoria finally appeared on the distant horizon. The city shimmered beneath the afternoon sun like something from a fairy tale. Octavia's heart began beating faster. She didn't understand why. Aurora noticed immediately. "Nervous?" "A little." "About university?" Octavia looked out the window. "...Not exactly." Aurora smiled knowingly but said nothing. --- Day Five As dawn painted the sky with soft shades of pink and gold... The carriage finally entered Eldoria. The streets were already alive. Students carrying luggage filled the roads leading toward the university. Friends who hadn't seen one another for months shouted excited greetings. The atmosphere was full of joy. When the carriage stopped outside Eldoria Royal University... Octavia stepped down first. She looked around the magnificent campus. "It feels good to be back." "It really does," Aurora agreed. The two friends collected their luggage and walked toward their dormitory apartment. Just as Aurora unlocked the door... A familiar cheerful voice called from behind them. "You two finally made it!" They turned. Arina came running toward them. Without hesitation, she threw her arms around both of them. "I missed you both so much!" "We missed you too," Octavia laughed. Aurora hugged her tightly. "I was beginning to think palace life had made you forget us." Arina placed a dramatic hand over her heart. "Never!" The three friends laughed together as they carried their luggage inside. The dormitory apartment felt exactly as they had left it. Warm. Comfortable. Filled with memories. --- Later that afternoon... Students gathered in the university courtyard. Everyone exchanged stories about their holidays. Professor Alistair Hawthorne welcomed the returning students with one of his famous speeches. "Knowledge," he began with a smile, "isn't measured by how much you remember during exams." The students listened attentively. "It's measured by how much you've grown while you were away." Octavia smiled. She had grown. In more ways than one. --- As the welcoming gathering ended... Students began walking back toward their classes. Octavia turned a corner leading toward the library. At the exact same moment... Someone else rounded the corner from the opposite direction. They stopped. Only a few steps apart. Lincoln. For a heartbeat... The bustling campus disappeared. Neither spoke. Neither looked away. Then... A warm smile slowly appeared on Lincoln's face. "Welcome back, Octavia." Her heart skipped. She smiled back. "It's good to see you again..." "...Lincoln." And somehow... Those simple words made the long three months apart feel as though they had never happened.
