A DAY WORTH EVERYTHING

803 Words
The first week of the new semester passed quickly. Lectures resumed. Assignments piled up once again. But somehow... Everything felt lighter. Because almost every day... Lincoln found a reason to see Octavia. Sometimes he met her after Professor Hawthorne's lecture. Sometimes he walked her to the dormitory apartment. Sometimes they simply sat together beneath the old willow tree near Lake Seraphine without saying much at all. Neither of them realized how naturally they had become part of each other's daily lives. --- One Friday afternoon... The final lecture ended earlier than expected. Students poured out of the university, excited for a free afternoon. Lincoln waited beneath the great oak tree near the main gate. The moment Octavia saw him... Her face lit up. She didn't even realize she had begun smiling before reaching him. "You waited for me?" Lincoln smiled. "I always enjoy seeing you." Her cheeks warmed. Aurora quietly noticed the exchange. She leaned toward Arina and whispered, "I give them another week before they admit they're in love." Arina laughed softly. "I've been thinking the same thing." --- Lincoln looked at Octavia. "Would you like to spend the afternoon with me?" She smiled. "I'd love to." --- Not far away... Damien approached Aurora. "Would you mind walking with me?" Aurora looked at Octavia before smiling. "I suppose I could." Arina folded her arms dramatically. "Well..." "I guess I'll entertain myself." All four laughed before going their separate ways. --- Lincoln led Octavia through the beautiful streets of Eldoria. Instead of taking the busy roads... He chose the quieter ones. They passed musicians playing violins. Children chasing butterflies. Artists painting landscapes. Street vendors selling flowers and handmade jewelry. Everything felt peaceful. At a small bookstore... Lincoln noticed Octavia admiring an old novel. "You've read this before?" She shook her head. "I've always wanted to." Without saying anything... Lincoln bought it. When he handed it to her... She looked surprised. "I can't accept this." "You can." "It's only a book." She smiled. "It's more than a book." "It means you were paying attention." Lincoln looked into her eyes. "I always pay attention when it comes to you." For a moment... Neither of them spoke. --- Meanwhile... Damien and Aurora wandered through the university gardens. They laughed over silly childhood stories. Aurora discovered Damien had once fallen into a lake trying to impress his cousins. She laughed so hard she had tears in her eyes. "You actually did that?" He covered his face dramatically. "I was twelve." "I'll never let you forget it." "I was afraid you'd say that." --- As evening approached... Lincoln and Octavia arrived at Lake Seraphine once again. The lake shimmered beneath the setting sun. Golden light danced across the water. "It somehow looks even more beautiful today," Octavia whispered. Lincoln looked at her instead. "I agree." She turned. Their eyes met. This time... Neither looked away. The breeze gently lifted her curls. Lincoln carefully reached out. "May I?" She nodded. He gently moved a loose curl away from her face. His fingers barely brushed her cheek. Her heart skipped. So did his. Neither noticed how close they had become. --- At the same time... Aurora and Damien sat on a grassy hill overlooking the university. The sky glowed with shades of orange and pink. Aurora smiled. "I've had a wonderful day." Damien looked at her quietly. "So have I." For reasons neither understood... They wished the sun would never set. --- Night slowly settled over Eldoria. Lincoln walked Octavia back to the dormitory apartment. They stopped outside the entrance. Neither wanted to say goodbye. Finally... Octavia spoke. "Thank you." "For today." Lincoln smiled softly. "Thank you for saying yes." She laughed. "I don't think I'd ever say no to spending time with you." The words escaped before she could stop them. Her cheeks immediately turned pink. Lincoln couldn't help smiling. "I'll remember that." She covered her face, embarrassed. "Oh no..." "Please forget I said that." "I don't think I can." They both laughed. --- As Octavia entered the dormitory apartment... Aurora and Arina were already waiting. The moment the door closed... The two girls exchanged mischievous looks. "Well?" Aurora asked. "How was your afternoon?" Octavia tried to look innocent. "It was nice." Arina burst into laughter. "'Nice?'" "The way you're smiling says something completely different." Octavia threw a pillow at her. All three girls dissolved into laughter that echoed through the apartment. Outside... Lincoln stood for another moment, looking at the window of the dormitory apartment. The light in Octavia's room came on. A gentle smile appeared on his face. He quietly turned and walked toward the palace. Unaware... Hidden among the shadows of the university walls... Two crimson eyes watched him leave. A cold voice whispered, "Enjoy your happiness while you still can..." "For soon..." "Everything will change."
