Morning arrived with golden sunlight spilling through Octavia's bedroom window, yet the warmth failed to chase away the icy feeling clinging to her heart.
She had barely slept.
Every time she drifted off, she heard the same deep voice.
"Stay behind me."
She remembered the old iron gate.
The ancient bridge hidden beneath thick mist.
The silver necklace resting against the stranger's chest.
His black leather jacket fluttering in the cold wind.
The heavy boots planted firmly between her and the monster.
The silver ring engraved with a crescent moon embracing a rose.
The scent of rain and pine that lingered long after he disappeared.
Everything was vivid...
Everything except his face.
No matter how hard she tried, it remained hidden by shadows.
Octavia sat upright and shook her head.
"It was only a dream," she whispered, though she didn't believe her own words.
A loud knock interrupted her thoughts.
"Octavia!" a cheerful voice called from outside. "If you're still sleeping, I'm coming in!"
Before she could answer, the door flew open.
Aurora.
Her best friend since childhood.
Unlike Octavia's quiet nature, Aurora was sunlight in human form—full of laughter, mischief, and endless excitement.
"There you are!" Aurora grinned. "I've been looking everywhere for you."
Octavia forced a smile.
"You've only looked in one place."
"And I found you."
Aurora threw herself onto the bed.
"Can you believe it? We finally graduated!"
Octavia laughed softly.
"I still can't."
"For years we dreamed about this."
Aurora clasped her hands dramatically.
"And in three days..."
She squealed.
"...we'll finally leave Raven Hollow!"
Octavia looked out the window toward the peaceful town where she had spent her entire life.
Stone cottages lined the narrow streets.
Flower boxes decorated every window.
Children chased each other through the marketplace while merchants prepared for another busy day.
It had always been home.
But dreams rarely stayed where they were born.
"The Royal Academy of Eldoria," Aurora whispered with shining eyes. "Can you imagine it?"
Everyone knew of Eldoria.
The grand medieval city stood weeks away from Raven Hollow, surrounded by towering walls and magnificent castles. Scholars, nobles, merchants, inventors, and students from every kingdom traveled there to study.
Only the brightest minds earned a place within its famous university.
And somehow...
Octavia and Aurora had been accepted.
"We're really going," Aurora said, hardly containing her excitement.
Octavia nodded.
"We're really going."
For the first time that morning, her smile reached her eyes.
The news of their departure had spread throughout the town.
Neighbors stopped by throughout the afternoon, bringing homemade bread, embroidered handkerchiefs, dried herbs for good luck, and heartfelt blessings.
"You'll make Raven Hollow proud," old Mrs. Eleanor said, wiping tears from her eyes.
"Don't forget us when you're famous scholars," the village blacksmith joked.
Aurora laughed.
"I promise I'll still visit every summer."
Octavia smiled.
"We both will."
It had become their promise.
No matter how far the university was...
Every year during the long break, they would return home.
Back to their families.
Back to Raven Hollow.
Back to the people who had raised them.
That evening, both families gathered for one last dinner before the girls began their journey.
The long wooden table overflowed with roasted chicken, fresh bread, vegetables, honey cakes, and warm apple cider.
Laughter filled the house.
Aurora's father challenged everyone to one final storytelling contest.
Her younger brothers argued over who would inherit Aurora's room while she was away.
Even Octavia laughed until tears formed in her eyes.
For a little while...
She forgot about the nightmare.
After dinner, she slipped outside for some fresh air.
The village was peaceful beneath the moonlight.
She wandered toward the small wooden bridge overlooking the gentle river that flowed through Raven Hollow.
The water shimmered beneath the stars.
She closed her eyes.
Then...
The air turned cold.
Painfully cold.
A breeze swept across the bridge.
With it came a scent she recognized instantly.
Rain.
Pine.
And something hauntingly familiar.
Octavia's eyes flew open.
Someone was there.
She couldn't see anyone.
Yet every instinct told her she wasn't alone.
"Who's there?" she asked quietly.
Silence.
Then...
Very softly...
Almost carried away by the wind...
A familiar voice whispered,
"Be careful."
Octavia spun around.
No one.
Only empty streets and dancing shadows.
Her heartbeat thundered.
She knew that voice.
It was him.
The stranger from her dreams.
But how could that be?
She wasn't asleep.
A sudden metallic sound echoed nearby.
Clink.
Something caught the moonlight near the edge of the bridge.
Octavia walked closer.
Resting on the old wooden planks was a tiny silver charm engraved with a crescent moon wrapped around a rose.
The very same symbol.
Her hands trembled as she picked it up.
It was ice cold.
Far colder than metal should have been.
She looked around one last time.
Nothing.
No footsteps.
No stranger.
No explanation.
Only the lingering scent of rain... and the feeling that unseen eyes were watching over her from the darkness.
Clutching the charm tightly in her hand, Octavia whispered the question that had begun to consume her.
"Who are you?"
The night gave no answer.
But somewhere beyond the reach of human eyes...
Someone had heard her.
