Octavia excused herself from her friends with a soft smile.
"I'll be back in a minute," she said before walking away from the lively gathering.
She needed a moment alone.
The night was breathtaking. A cool breeze danced through the streets, gently swaying the trees that lined the sidewalks. Warm golden lights illuminated the buildings, giving the city a magical glow. Music drifted from nearby cafés while people laughed, chatted, and strolled peacefully under the star-filled sky.
For the first time in days, Octavia felt at peace.
She smiled to herself as she admired the beautiful surroundings.
"This place is even more beautiful at night," she whispered.
She continued walking slowly, taking in every detail. Couples held hands as they passed by, children chased one another with carefree laughter, and street performers entertained small crowds.
Everything felt so normal.
Until it didn't.
A strange sensation crawled over her skin.
It felt as though someone was watching her.
She stopped walking and glanced over her shoulder.
Nothing.
Only strangers going about their evening.
Octavia sighed, convincing herself that she was simply being paranoid.
She turned and continued walking.
A few moments later, the uneasy feeling returned—stronger than before.
This time she knew she wasn't imagining it.
Someone was following her.
Her heartbeat quickened as she slowly looked behind her again.
There he was.
A tall figure dressed in black walked several metres behind her. His hands were tucked into the pockets of his jacket, and the cap beneath his hood hid most of his face.
She couldn't see his eyes.
But she could feel them.
Watching her.
Every step he took seemed deliberate.
She swallowed hard and quickened her pace.
The stranger did the same.
Fear settled deep inside her chest.
She turned forward, hoping to find a crowded place where she could lose him.
Instead, another man appeared farther down the street.
He was walking directly towards her.
Slowly.
Confidently.
Her feet froze.
One man behind her.
Another in front.
She looked left and right, searching for somewhere to escape, but the shops nearby had already closed, and the alley beside her was too dark to risk entering.
As the man in front drew closer, something about him caught her attention.
He looked familiar.
Very familiar.
But the shadow cast by the hood of his jacket concealed his face, making it impossible to recognise him.
"Who are you?" she whispered under her breath.
The man didn't answer.
He simply kept walking.
Octavia's breathing became uneven.
She spun around to check the man behind her.
To her surprise, he had stopped.
The two of them remained perfectly still for several seconds.
Then, without warning, the stranger behind her turned around and walked away into the darkness.
Confused, Octavia blinked.
"What...?"
She quickly turned back to face the man approaching from the front.
He was gone.
Completely gone.
The street ahead was empty.
No footsteps.
No shadow.
No sign that anyone had ever been there.
A cold chill raced down her spine.
Her heart pounded loudly in her ears.
"That's impossible," she whispered.
She knew what she had seen.
She wasn't imagining things.
Just then, a cold gust of wind swept through the street, carrying with it a whisper so faint she almost missed it.
"Run..."
Octavia's eyes widened.
She spun around, searching for the source of the voice, but there was no one nearby.
The laughter of strangers had faded.
The once lively street had become strangely silent.
Every instinct in her body screamed that she wasn't safe.
Without thinking twice, she turned and ran back towards her friends, unaware that from the rooftop of a nearby building, a pair of piercing eyes silently watched her disappear into the crowd.
A low voice broke the silence.
"So... she's finally here."
The shadow smiled.
"The game can begin."
