THE AWAKENING

927 Words
Twilight settled gently over Eldoria. The last lecture of the day had ended nearly an hour ago, and the city was slowly exchanging the bustle of daylight for the quiet magic of evening. Golden lanterns flickered to life along the cobbled streets, their warm glow reflecting against elegant stone buildings as merchants packed away their goods. Beyond the city walls, the countryside stretched into rolling green hills kissed by the fading light. The sky blazed with shades of amber, crimson, and violet, while a cool breeze carried the scent of wildflowers through the air. "It would be a crime to go straight back to the dormitory," Aurora declared, stretching her arms toward the colourful sky. Octavia laughed softly. "Only you would describe homework as a crime." "It is a crime," Aurora insisted. "Against students." Their laughter echoed down the quiet path. The two friends had decided to enjoy the evening before returning to campus, following a narrow trail that wound through open meadows just beyond Eldoria. It wasn't far from the city, and many students came here to clear their minds after long days of study. For a while, they simply walked. They talked about Professor Hawthorne's lecture, laughed over Aurora's dramatic complaints about assignments, and admired the beauty surrounding them. Octavia stopped beside a hill blanketed in tiny blue wildflowers. "They're beautiful." Aurora smiled. "So are you." Octavia rolled her eyes playfully. "You say that because we're friends." "I say it because it's true." The compliment made Octavia blush. The breeze lifted her striking orange-red curls, catching the last rays of sunlight until they seemed to glow like copper touched by fire. Aurora grinned. "If I had hair like yours, I'd spend all day looking in mirrors." "I think you already do." "I do not." "You absolutely do." The two burst into laughter. Then... The laughter faded. Not because they chose to stop. Because the world around them had. The breeze disappeared. The grass no longer swayed. The birds... Had stopped singing. Aurora frowned. "That's strange." Octavia looked around uneasily. "It was so noisy a moment ago." Now... Nothing. Only silence. A silence so deep it seemed to press against their ears. A twig snapped. Both girls turned sharply. The sound had come from the trees bordering the meadow. Another snap. Then another. Slow. Heavy. Something was moving through the undergrowth. Octavia instinctively stepped closer to Aurora. "Maybe it's a deer." Aurora wanted to believe that. She truly did. But every instinct in her body whispered otherwise. Without warning— A monstrous grey wolf burst from the trees. It landed with a heavy thud, sending dust and loose leaves swirling into the air. Its fur stood on end. Its amber eyes burned with unnatural intensity. A deep growl rolled from its chest. Octavia gasped. "Aurora..." The wolf took one slow step forward. Then another. Its sharp teeth gleamed beneath the fading light. "It doesn't look afraid of us," Aurora whispered. "It looks..." "...hungry." Octavia reached for Aurora's hand. "We should back away." Slowly. Carefully. They retreated. The wolf followed. Every step they took... It matched. Neither dared to run. Until the beast suddenly lunged. "Run!" The girls spun around and sprinted across the meadow. Branches clawed at their clothes. Loose stones shifted beneath their feet. Behind them came the thunder of pounding paws. It was gaining. Fast. Octavia stumbled. "Aah!" She hit the ground hard. Before she could stand— The wolf leapt. "Octavia!" Aurora didn't think. She didn't hesitate. She threw herself over her friend, wrapping both arms around her as tightly as she could. Her eyes squeezed shut. Tears spilled down her cheeks. "This can't be how it ends..." The growl came closer. Closer. Closer— Then... A scream tore from Aurora's lips. Not a scream of fear. Something deeper. Something ancient. The earth exploded beneath them. A blinding wave of silver-gold light erupted from Aurora's body, bursting outward like a storm. The force shook the meadow. Trees bent violently. Leaves whirled into the sky. The wolf was struck mid-air. Its body was hurled backwards with terrifying force, crashing through bushes before slamming into the trunk of an ancient oak. A sharp cry echoed through the valley. The creature struggled to its feet. For the first time... Fear filled its eyes. It looked toward Aurora. Then... With a wounded whimper... It disappeared into the forest. Silence returned. Aurora slowly opened her eyes. She was still holding Octavia. "...Are we..." Octavia stared at the shattered ground surrounding them. The grass had been flattened in a perfect circle. Several young trees had splintered. The air still shimmered faintly. Aurora looked down at her trembling hands. "I..." Her voice broke. "I didn't touch it." Octavia could barely speak. "You... saved us." "No." Aurora shook her head, tears filling her eyes again. "I don't know what happened." Neither did. As they stood there, trying to understand the impossible... Aurora suddenly froze. At the edge of the forest... A woman dressed in flowing white stood between the trees. Her face was hidden. She simply watched. Aurora blinked. The woman was gone. "Aurora?" Octavia's voice pulled her back. She stared at the empty forest. "...Nothing." But deep inside... She knew she had seen someone. Or... Something. The walk back to Eldoria was quiet. Neither of them laughed. Neither could find the words. Somewhere, hidden within the darkening forest... Golden eyes watched the two girls disappear toward the city. And far above, the first stars appeared over Eldoria. One destiny had begun with a dream. Another... Had awakened with a scream.
