Chapter 2

686 Words
Vera cupped her face and blubbered, "Honey, she insulted my dignity! How am I supposed to show my face to anyone ever again?" I let out a cold laugh. She had the gall to be a homewrecker, and now she was worried about being called out for it? Give me a break. But the next second, Terrence's words sent a violent, icy chill seeping through every inch of my body. "Romina, your dad was right about you. You never know what's good for you!" I bit down so hard on my lip, but I still couldn't stop the tears from blurring my vision. My dad had cheated on my mom over and over again. She couldn't take the constant heartbreak, fell into a deep depression, and eventually passed away. At my wedding, he was stopped at the door. Furious and humiliated, he screamed at me at the top of his lungs. "Romina, you're just as ungrateful and stuck-up as your mother! No man will ever love you for his whole life!" Back then, Terrence's eyes had blazed red with rage. He didn't care about making a scene, he threw himself at my dad and started brawling with him right there. "You old bastard, listen closely! As long as I'm breathing, I'll love Romina for the rest of my life!" But now? He was using the exact same hurtful words my own father had spat at me to cut me deep. I clutched at my chest, the ache was so sharp I thought I'd black out right then and there. Vera was barely holding back a smirk. She copied me, pressing a hand to her own chest and yelling that she was in agony. Terrence glanced down, hesitated for all of two seconds, then swept Vera up into his arms and stormed out without a second glance back at me. That night, the story blew up all over social media's top trending lists. Some people slammed the mistress for being shameless. But way more people mocked me and my mom, calling us both useless losers who couldn't keep a man interested. After seeing all that garbage online and how things had fallen apart, there was nothing left for me in this place worth holding onto. I packed up my bags, ready to leave. Before I left, I wanted to erase every last trace of the memories we shared in this city. That included destroying the wedding dress I'd designed with my own two hands. But when I went to track it down? That one-of-a-kind dress was wrapped right around Vera's shoulders. The female store manager gushed with genuine admiration. "Mrs. Colton, you look absolutely stunning in this!" Terrence exchanged a soft, adoring smile with her, and they both let the title slide without a word, like it was already theirs by right. The dress fit her like a glove, and all the pieces suddenly clicked into place for me. No wonder it had felt so wrong when I tried it on for our fifth anniversary. This one-of-a-kind promise wedding dress, designed exclusively for me, had been completely altered to fit her measurements! I felt like I'd swallowed a live fly, my stomach curdled. I snapped, "Don't you have your own clothes? Take it off." Terrence wore a smug, insolent smirk. "Calm down, okay? Vera's been with me this whole time without any proper title, she's insecure. It's just a dress, let her have it." My gaze locked onto that wedding dress I'd spent over half a year designing. I gritted my teeth so hard my jaw ached. I wasn't giving an inch. "What do you mean no proper title? Didn't you hear people just call Vera Mrs. Colton? I don't want this dress anymore, but I'm not about to hand this over to garbage!" I reached out to yank the dress off her, but my fingers hadn't even grazed the fabric yet. She let out a bloodcurdling shriek and started flailing her arms like she'd lost her mind. Terrence panicked immediately. He grabbed my jaw, yanked my face toward her and yelled, "Here! Hit me right here!"
