Chapter 4

696 Words
Vera's smirk stretched even wider, smug as a cat that'd just stolen the cream. "Relax. They won't lay a finger on you. If they did, wouldn't that just make my husband feel bad for you?" The words had barely left her mouth when, right in front of my shocked, disbelieving eyes, she slammed her own palm across her face hard, over and over, then yanked at her own clothes to tear them open. Beneath the fabric, her skin was dotted all over with dark bruises and ugly scrapes and cuts. I caught on to her game instantly. My stomach dropped like a stone, and I lunged forward to stop her. "Honey… help me!" Terrence burst onto the scene right then. One looked at the mess in front of him, and his face iced over instantly. Vera crumpled into his arms, sobbing like her whole world had ended. "I don't even want to live anymore… I've been diagnosed with depression. I came here to apologize to your wife. I know I shouldn't have fallen for you, but you can't help who you love, right…?" I stared straight at Terrence, my gaze unflinching. He'd forgotten. Back when we were in the middle of our cold war, he'd given Vera full authority to deploy all of Colton Group's security personnel. He didn't say a word to me. He just slipped his jacket off, wrapped it around the girl carefully, and murmured soft, soothing words to her. When he finally looked at me, his eyes were cold with total, bitter disappointment. "Why, Romina? You're the last person in the world I ever wanted to lash out at, but you just keep crossing every single one of my lines! Vera told me before that you were siccing internet trolls on her, spreading filthy rumors about her. I didn't believe her. But I'm seeing this with my own two eyes right now. What do you have to say for yourself?" Rage burned so hot in my chest I thought my eyeballs might pop. I was seeing red. "Terrence! Stop being an i***t and don't lump me in with your nonsense! Why the hell would I know she'd show up at the cemetery? She's got every single one of those bodyguards at her beck and call. How the hell would I even be able to lay a finger on her?" A wave of acrid nausea surged up my throat, and I doubled over, retching dryly. Vera's sharp eyes immediately locked onto the divorce papers peeking out of my bag. She snatched them out, letting out a shrill gasp. "Wait, are you pregnant, Mrs. Colton?" she asked when she also spotted the pregnancy report inside my bag. Then she continued, "Oh! You don't have a single family member left in this world, and now you're suddenly leaving the Colton family. Don't tell me you're actually carrying another man's baby?" Terrence's chest heaved violently, every muscle in his body coiled to hold back his rage. "You've been taking supplements to get your body in shape for the past six months, and you've been taking birth control pills the whole time… No wonder! No wonder you've been acting so differently lately, so cold to me! This is what it was all about!" The whites of his eyes were blazing red. "You make me sick to my stomach!" I let out a bitter laugh, laughing at how cruel and idiotic he was. My heart felt like it was getting torn straight in two, but right then my whole body went weirdly light, like every last bit of tension and pain was draining out of me. End of Romina's POV Outside the emergency room, when Terrence heard that so-called "wild bastard" of hers hadn't made it, he breathed a quiet sigh of relief. A kid was Romina's biggest weakness. It looked like fate was finally on his "lucky" side after all. But before he could even fully let that breath out, the head of the IVF department walked up to him, positively beaming. "Congratulations, Mr. Colton! The fertilized egg from you and your wife has been implanted successfully. By our calculations, your wife is almost a month pregnant!"
