Chapter 10

KYLE JIMENEZ'S POV   Waking up by the sunray from my window, I slowly opened my eyes and rubbed them for a second when I turned around and to my surprise, it was Coleen.   I moved a little and started relaxing because I almost had a heart attack like she didn't even move and sits beside me, staring at her phone.   "I didn't see you there." I said. "Hey, about yesterday I am really sorry. I really mean it although you wanted to explore I refused and----"   "It's fine, I already accepted your apology yesterday. Actually, I am sorry for not talking to you. Come on, let's eat," She smiled and touched my hand, and walked out.   Based on her expressions, I know she is telling the truth but I still have this weird feeling towards her.   I fixed myself and washed my face with soap but before I reach my towel beside me, my eyes automatically moved in the mirror with someone beside me!   She is wearing the same clothing as I saw her yesterday, but she was facing behind so I can't see her face.   I couldn't even move because of the terror and she suddenly laughed so evilly. She slowly moved her head towards my direction so I ran as fast as I can.   Seeing her beside me is too much scarier and seeing her face can be worse than my hallucinations.   "Hey, are you okay?" Coleen suddenly showed up behind the door, confused.   "Y-yeah, how did you get in? Just--argh never mind," I furiously said and walked slowly out of the bathroom.   My knees were shaking too much and my throat felt sore but I just appeared to be fine and avoided contact for now.   I faced my eyes downwards so I can't see it again nor feel it.   My morning is not great, too much scare and goosebumps around me and it really sucks.   "Feeling alright, Kyle? You seem startled and not responding today, huh?" To keep me calm and try to be okay in front of them, I faced them and greeted them with a smile.   "Yeah I am definitely great and fine, should I help you with that?" I asked and went towards Mommy.   I didn't want to scare them and be worried about me, I can handle it all by myself. Besides, this situation I am in might scare mommy, being alone here all along is too much so telling her what I just feel can probably make her scared too.   We sat and prayed led by Coleen then we started to eat our breakfast.   "You guys need to put dirt on your hands, so I will give you some instructions because I have to do something too," Mommy said.   "That will be great right, Coleen?" I answered and looked at her but she continued eating.   We finished eating and Coleen washed the dishes while I cleaned the table in silence. I just don't get her mood today, why isn't she responding?   Did she see what I witnessed inside the bathroom? Did she know what situation I am in?   Am I going crazy?!   "No," She whispered and I knew she said this.   I looked in her direction but she is still washing the dishes, minding her own business.   Did she just read my thoughts? What the heck is going on?   "Yeah, I won't be home for like the whole summer, Dexie." So yeah, it's confirmed, I am going crazy after all.   She was on the phone all along, what kind of mind have I got today, Kyle?   As I finished doing my task, Mommy bought one box full of gardening tools and equipment and placed it on the table.   "Here are my old tools but they still work you know, this baby is more older than me so reserve this and take care of them, okay?" I nodded as a response and gently took the box to the garden, where our work begins.   Coleen followed us and my eyes were shocked as the whole garden is so wide but too dirty to see.   Insects and plants that have died for like years are still here, making the whole garden a little bit scary and gross.   There is also a fountain in the middle and an old tree beside it, which made me amazed how it has grown and is still alive. I think that tree has been living decades or even a century here, but how come it survived even it wasn't taken care of?   There are also tall grass and a pile of old wood around so this really makes my muscles sore and tired the whole day.   "You can choose seeds from that warehouse as you can see, there are plenty of them it so starts your day. Be a green thumb than your old granny here," She said and pointed to the warehouse, not far from where we are standing.   "This is going to be a whole tiring day after we finished this," Coleen whispered while looking at the abandoned garden.   Mommy went inside and we started to take all of the tools out of the box, slowly and carefully.   Coleen handed me a pair of gloves and a mask, "This will be our bonding together like it's been a while."   Yeah, it's been a while since we touched the dirt and being together as well.   We have been long-distance since we graduated high school and we just call and send messages every day.   She was sent to Australia to study college and live there, making us not see each other and miss each other very much.   This was the first summer she went back to our hometown to have some bonding with me before our work and stress strikes us again.   "I think we should start picking up those trash around here then arrange the dirt that scattered around, "I suggested, pointing it out.   She nodded and we started to do it. I took two big plastic bags and gave one to her. We started picking up the pieces of wood and some strange trash.   There were some big smooth rocks here, so I piled them up inside the other plastic bag so I paint it or just design them later.   It's been hours since we cleaned the whole garden up and we didn't even start planting plants.   Both of us sat on a bench and stared at the pile of plastic bags on the side, making us more tired.   Mommy suddenly came out with drinks and some snacks, "Here are some snacks, take some and rest for a bit," She smiled and left us.   "So how's your trip to New York last last week?" I asked.   She took a glass and took one big gulp. "It was really great, but I have to go there again." She said and took a snack.   "Business trip again? Well, you'll get promoted right after that, hm?" I asked and looked at her.   Coleen ignored me and start looking at her phone again, so I just ate the cookie.   She hates cookies and I just don't get it. She doesn't have allergies or what, but maybe she doesn't like it at all.   After some 20 minutes of silence and rest, I stood up and continued my work.   Glancing at her from the bench, sitting there, and keeping herself busy with her phone is enough for me to regain my strength and finish this all at once.   I really missed her after all these years, she is the love of my life that I didn't want to lose or so.   She even smiled a little as she keeps on typing, my mind tells me that maybe she's cheating me. But I refused it, thinking that she is chatting with her friends and she will never do it to me.   I finished all the work and the only thing that we will do is plant the seeds and add some fertilizer to the soil.   "Hey, Kyle, Mommy's calling us now, she said we will eat our lunch," She yelled and went inside.   I removed my gloves and mask on the bench and washed my hands on the kitchen sink.   "How's the garden? Seems you guys clean it all up in just an hour," Mommy said and sat beside me.   She also saw how Coleen was smiling with her phone. I know she thinks something like she's cheating, but I know she isn't.   "I'll use the bathroom," She shortly said and stood up still typing on her phone.   As she was not seen and far from us, Mommy touched my shoulder and looked directly into my eyes.   "Is something wrong? Is she----"   "No, she would never. She just missed her friends and chatting with them," I answered and quickly went to the refrigerator and took one drink.   Coleen returned and we ate quietly, no sound was heard from us.   "Both of you should rest, I'm gonna go to the market to buy some groceries so don't you worry about me," Mommy said while cleaning the table. "And leave the dishes to me, I'll do it later when I come back."   We both agreed and went to our rooms to rest, but my mind keep on waking me, making me do anything.   My whole body is tired and wanted to rest, but my soul is not tired enough. What should I do? Bond with Coleen who's not even talking to me seriously and busy on her phone?   I didn't want to distract her either, it will make her angrier at me and stop talking to me again.   Like what I did two years ago, I just took her phone and just to tease her, but her face shown scared and angry so I put it back to her.   Talking to me might tire her more, that's what I always think. Maybe painting some things might help me, paintings also make me happy and relaxed.   I did not even bring my paintbrushes and paint, what can I do? Stare at the window or just speak alone and wait for some mental doctors to bring me to their hospital?   Maybe our ancestors had an interest in painting, this house is really big and old enough to know that there's a 1% chance that there will be collections of an artist here.   So I stood up and check all the rooms and find something that can paint. I bought my flashlight so I can catch some creepy ghosts even if it's still in the middle of the day.   Yeah, I am scared of ghosts and scary stuff, okay. Some 6-foot tall guys are scared like me too so don't laugh at me.   I am not going to wait for Mommy to give me those, it will take a while.   I went to the next 7 rooms and found nothing, just a regular old room with a bed. So I went downstairs and under the stairs there was this old door, feeling me some strange vibe.   I have no choice, it's either get crazy all alone or check this out.   So I stepped towards it and opened the old creaking door. It made some creak so it made me scared a little and entered the room.   I opened my flashlight and found myself going down the stairs, but what I saw made my jaw drop in shock.   The basement room is full of paintings, big and small, colorful and artistic. There were many paintbrushes thorn apart and scattered and as I went closer to the table, it was really organized.   It was complete and organized as I wanted it, maybe one of my ancestors was reincarnated as me? I was really shocked and amazed, although the whole room was covered in spider webs and insects, the paintings and the table is well preserved.   The table is in the center of the room with one fancy seat.   Maybe this is my fate before I sleep today, clean this up, and have some fun.   I went outside to get some cleaning materials and I went back to the basement.   My whole body felt electricity running inside me when I saw Coleen sitting on the seat and it really creeps me when I stepped in.   How did she know I was here?   "Didn't know you have some interests in paintings too, huh. You really make me crazier over you," She coldly said and walked out.   Her presence made me feel chills to my spine, making me freeze.
