Sunday had been one of the best days that Kyle had had in quite a while. He didn’t even check his phone once and that was a record for him. He couldn’t go a few hours without checking his social media or updating his status.
When he got home, he turned on his phone and found a bunch of texts and missed calls from his friends and he knew he was going to have his arse handed over to him the following day.
But unfortunately it was now Monday and he had some pissed off friends to deal with. When Akina got out of the car and dashed through the main school doors, Jackson pushed off from his car and headed directly for him. And the other two followed closely behind.
Kyle took a deep breath and got out of the car. It was better if he faced it head on rather than wait it out. “What’s up?”
Jackson shot him a glare and Kyle swallowed. “Really? That’s all you have to say after ghosting us the whole of yesterday,” he shot with his hands folded over his chest.
“I had things to do,” Kyle replied with a shrug and hoisted his bag over his shoulder. “You do know what that means right?” he asked as he began heading towards the school entrance.
Jackson fell in step with him as Wyatt and Vincent followed closely behind not once saying anything.
“Seriously Kyle? Seriously?” Jackson snapped. “You ditched us so you could hang out with that weirdo. Are you for real right now?”
Kyle stopped walking and glared at his so called best friend. He shoved him up against the locker. “Don’t you ever say that about her, got it?” he seethed through clenched teeth.
Wyatt and Vincent went up to separate them as a crowd had now formed around them.
“Dude chill out,” Wyatt said as he held him back. “You guys are best friends.”
Kyle pushed off Wyatt’s hands. “Yeah but Jackson is acting like such a misogynistic jerk.”
Jackson let out a humorous laugh, “How rich. Am being a misogynist really? Just because I called your new little toy a weirdo, huh?” he spat. “Dude get over yourself, just because Mariah didn’t want your arse doesn’t give you the reason to be a jerk. I’m pretty sure she’s just using you too.”
Kyle snapped and grabbed Jackson by the collar of his school shirt as he shoved him hard against the locker. “What the f**k is your problem man? What did she ever do to you for you to hate her so much?” he slammed him into the lockers.
By now, the small crowd had turned into a third of the student body. They all had their phones out and were no doubt taking pictures and videos.
Jackson smirked smugly, “look at you acting like you care about her,” he laughed, “we all know you just want to get into her pants. We all do, she’s hot but she’s still a freak and a weirdo.”
The punch landed on Jackson’s face before the words even finished leaving his mouth. Kyle was fuming. He wasn’t thinking clearly as he threw another punch at his best friend’s face.
Wyatt tried pulling him off of Jackson but Kyle just shrugged him off as he threw yet another punch.
“Kyle stop, you’re going to get in trouble,” Vincent said as he looked frantically around but Kyle wasn’t listening.
He threw another punch but Jackson blocked it and threw his own. It hit Kyle right on the jaw and he stumbled back. He held his jaw as he glared at Jackson who smirked back with a bloodied lip.
“What? Can’t handle it?” Jackson spat blood onto the floor.
“Um guys, not to ruin this whole thing you’ve got going but Mr. Briggs is on his way,” Vincent said and some of the other students rushed off to their classes.
It was like Kyle didn’t hear anything as he threw himself on Jackson, knocking them both to the floor. He threw punch after punch at his face but Jackson managed to block a few of them and throw back his own. That only made Kyle lose his temper, the threw punch after punch until blood began gushing out of Jackson’s nose.
“What is going on here?” the voice of their deputy head teacher boomed from up him.
Wyatt grabbed Kyle and pulled him up from Jackson as Vincent helped him up.
“I asked what is happening here,” Mr. Briggs bellowed. “And I expect an answer.”
Jackson held his bloody nose as he spat out blood. “Ask him,” he said glaring at Kyle. “You broke my nose dude. What the hell?”
Kyle was still fuming, his lip was slit open and a small amount of blood was smeared on his shirt.
“Since no one is going to answer me,” Mr. Briggs said, “the four of you follow me to my office, NOW!”
Kyle picked up his bag and they all followed him to his office. When they were sat in his office, Mr. Briggs looked at each one of them intently before he spoke.
“I don’t know what the hell happened, but I will not tolerate fighting on school grounds,” he snapped in his usual cold voice.
Wyatt subtly rolled his eyes with an amused smile but Mr. Briggs saw him.
“Do you find this funny Mr. Nash? Would you like me to call your parents in for fighting?”
The smile that was Wyatt’s face wiped off with those words and Kyle internally chuckled at the irony of the situation. Sure he was still pissed off, but he couldn’t help but finding it funny even though he was definitely getting suspended.
“Now I’m sure you all know the consequences of fighting on school grounds,” Mr. Briggs said as he clasped his hands together. He had a triumphant smile on his face.
They all nodded.
“Good, because this makes my job a whole lot easier,” he smiled as he searched his drawers for the suspension slips. He wrote down their names and handed them over to them.
“But Vincent and I weren’t fighting and according to school rules, you have no grounds for suspending us,” Wyatt said smugly as he moved forward and clasped his hands. “You can’t suspend us for doing nothing unless you want this to get back to the parent-teacher association for the unfair suspension of two innocent boys.”
The smile on Mr. Briggs’ face was wiped off as he glared at Wyatt. Kyle and Vincent softly chuckled at how he had gone from being smug to pissed off in a matter of seconds. This was why he was friends with Wyatt. The guy could talk his way out of anything, literally.
“But since we are all mature adults here, I’m sure we can figure something out. Can’t we Mr. Briggs?” Wyatt asked coolly.
Mr. Briggs swallowed as he adjusted the collar of his shirt. “I’m sure we can do that Mr. Nash,” he replied through clenched teeth. He took back the other two slips and tore them in half. “But that does not mean that Kyle and Jackson aren’t suspended because trust me, they are.”
Kyle sighed as he picked up his suspension slip and finally looked it. “A month?” he exclaimed and threw the slip back on his desk. “Like the hell you are suspending me for a month.”
“Language Mr. Thornton,” Mr. Briggs scolded.
“If I were you Mr. Briggs, then I’d greatly consider my decision because less you forget, my father contributes nearly a half towards running this school and I don’t think he would appreciate you suspending his son for that long.”
Kyle hated using his father’s name for things but he couldn’t be suspended for a month. Otherwise he would only see Akina for a few hours after school and he couldn’t do that, not when they were starting to get each other.
Mr. Briggs sighed and took the slips back, tore them in half and wrote new ones. “Let this be the last that any of you fight on school premises,” he gnashed his teeth as he handed them the new slips. “Because believe me, the next time not even your daddy can save you.”
Kyle rolled his eyes as he took the new slip and he smiled. He now had two weeks’ suspension which was better. “Thank you sir, we’ll be on our way now.”
“You should get that nose checked Mr, Hart,” Mr. Briggs said as he handed Jackson a handkerchief.
The four guys stood up and left Mr. Briggs’s office who cursed just as soon as the door slammed shut.
“That was hilarious,” Vincent commented. “Did you see the look on his face? He looked like he was going to murder you both.”
Wyatt cackled, “it was hilarious, especially when you brought your dad into it.” He patted Kyle on the back, “that was purely a blissful sight to beyond Kyle my boy. Who would have thought you had it in you?”
Jackson glared at Kyle as they walked but Kyle just shrugged it off. He didn’t want to get another suspension slip nor did he want to have to hit his best friend again.
“Yeah, good ‘ol Kyle bringing daddy to save him from his own self, how ironic,” he spat as he wiped the dried blood from his nose with the handkerchief that he was given.
“Get over yourself Jack,” Kyle said as the four of them walked out of the school and into the parking lot. “Just let it go and stop trying to pick a fight with me.”
Wyatt and Vincent had moved in between of them and Kyle rolled his eyes.
“I’m not going to hit him so you both can just relax.”
Vincent and Wyatt exchanged a look before responding at the same time “Nope, not going to happen.”
Kyle raised his hands up in surrender as they reached his car. He turned to face them with his eyebrows raised. “Aren’t you both supposed to be class? You know, since you aren’t suspended and all.”
That made Wyatt laugh as he slung his hand over his shoulders. “We would never let the both of you do the walk of shame alone,” he grinned. “What kind of friends would that make us?”
“Normal ones,” Jackson replied drily.
Kyle was still surprised why Jackson was still hanging around him. He had thought that he would want nothing to do with him after he had broken his nose and slit his lip.
“I’m really sorry for hitting you and breaking your nose though,” he apologised as he looked at Jackson’s bloody nose. “You should really get that nose checked out before it gets infected.”
Jackson shrugged in a whatever sign as he got into his car and drove away.
“Okay, that was weird,” Vincent said exactly what Kyle was thinking. “What’s gotten into him these past few days?”
“Beats me,” Kyle replied. “I’m just as confused as the both of you.”
Wyatt moved to where Jackson’s car had just been as they watched his car speed off in the distance. “Can we head over to your place?” he asked.
Kyle shook his head incredulously and got in his car. He threw his bag on the backseat as he put the keys in the ignition and closed the door.
“Wait, is that a yes?” Wyatt yelled as Kyle put the car in reverse and rolled down his window.
“That’s a go back to class and actually learn something for once,” he said through the window. “Oh and tell Akina I’ll pick her up after school.” And then he was speeding out of the student parking lot leaving Wyatt and Vincent glaring at him.
******************
Kyle didn’t know where to go as he drove. He didn’t want to go home and have to explain to Linda how he had gotten suspended from school in the second week of school. It was going to be hard to do but he figured the he could stall it for as long as possible.
He drove around aimlessly for few hours before he got tired of it and decided to stop at a mall. Besides, he was hungry and needed food. He parked his car and went to the food court where he bought something and sat a table alone.
A few girls passed and sent him flirtatious smiles and waves which he casually returned. He didn’t want to be rude to them, but that didn’t mean he was interested either.
As he was taking the last sip from milkshake, a girl with bright baby eyes and dark hair sat down at his table. She wore a black crop-top, leather pants, a leather jacket with black combat boots.
Kyle placed his finished milkshake down as he looked at the girl with a raised brow. “Can I help you?”
The girl rolled her eyes as if she had better things to do rather than sit there with him. He couldn’t blame her because he felt the exact same way.
“Look, I don’t want to be here as much as you do,” she said, “but my friends over there.” She pointed and Kyle turned in the direction she was pointing in. There were two girls who kept throwing glances their way as they giggled. “They dared me to come up and here ask you to kiss me and since I’m not one to back down from a dare, here I am.”
Kyle was stunned, he had never met a girl as confident and outspoken as her. He wished Akina could be like her, go for what you wanted type.
“So are you going to do it or not?” she asked impatiently as she tapped her nails the table. “I really don’t have all day.”
If it was before he had met Akina, he wouldn’t have hesitated or thought it over. He would have just done it and didn’t care about who she was. But ever since he met Akina, he hadn’t wanted to be with any other girl who wasn’t her.
“I don’t even know your name.”
“Hey, I’m Keira nice to meet you. Will you kiss me now?”
Kyle laughed, she was bold and he liked that. She would have been someone he wouldn’t have minded hooking up with. “I’m Kyle.”
Keira rolled her eyes as she flipped her dark hair to the side. Kyle finally noticed the purple highlights. “So Kyle, will you kiss me? You look like a guy who doesn’t mind kissing strange random girls who you just met.”
A smirk appeared on Kyle’s face at her assumption. “What makes you think I kiss just any random girl?”
“Because you look like someone who likes to have fun. Am I wrong?”
“Touché.”
Keira leaned in close and her breathe fanned his face as she spoke. “Just one little simple innocent kiss Kyle.”
Kyle considered it and then shrugged. It wasn’t like he would be cheating on anyone. He leaned in and met her half way. “Just one kiss right?”
Both their breathes were coming in hard and fast.
“Of course.”
And then their lips were touching out. It started as a slow kiss with each of them taking their time exploring the other’s mouth but then it turned hot and fast. Keira ran her hands through his hair and Kyle gently bit her bottom lip and she opened her mouth and his tongue started exploring every bit of it. They were full on making out in public and Kyle couldn’t care less about everyone else.
Keira pulled away and smiled at him. “That was fun Kyle, we should do it some other time too,” she picked up a napkin, wrote down her number and slid it towards him. “Call me when you aren’t thinking of anyone.” And then she was walking towards her friends leaving Kyle breathless.
He didn’t understand what she meant, but that kiss, that was one of the hottest and fieriest kisses that he had had in a long while that he didn’t really care what she meant.
His phone pinged with a text and Kyle finally snapped out of it. He took his phone out from his pocket and checked who it was and when he saw who it was. He hadn’t realised that the time had gone and he was late.
Shite, he cursed as he hastily stuffed Keira’s number in his pocket and got up. He hurriedly got in his car and sped out of the mall while cursing the entire time. He only hoped that Akina wasn’t that mad at him after this.
When he got to the school, Akina was sat on a bench hunched over her phone. He parked the car and got out.
“I’m really sorry,” he apologised as he approached her.
Akina’s head snapped up and she shut her phone before stuffing it in her bag. She walked up to him and just stared at him not saying a word.
“I’m really sorry,” he said again, “I swear I’ll make it up to you. Just tell me how and I will do it.”
Akina looked at him with a look that he couldn’t quite decipher and then headed towards his car. Kyle followed behind her and unlocked the car as she got in and he followed suit.
She was oddly quiet and Kyle knew he had messed up big time. “So you aren’t going to talk to me?” he asked as he just sat there looking at her.
Akina shrugged and pulled her phone out.
Sighing, Kyle started the car and drove out of the school parking lot. They drove in silence as Akina was too busy on her phone ignoring him.
Yes, he deserved her cold treatment and the worst part was he didn’t know how he was going to fix it. He had really messed up and he couldn’t help but think about what Keira had said in that moment.
