CHAPTER 6: THE SHADOW PROTOCOL

The drawing was crumpled in Damon’s fist. He stood in the center of the devastated hotel suite, the air around him vibrating with a lethal, suffocating pressure. The furniture was overturned. The mirrors were shattered. It looked like a bomb had gone off—and in a way, it had. Silas, his Beta, stood in the doorway, head bowed low, exposing his neck in submission. He was a warrior who had survived three territory wars, but right now, he was terrified to breathe. "The sensors were hacked," Silas reported, his voice steady but strained. "The thermal signature was a loop. They left the building twenty minutes ago via a laundry logistics truck." Damon didn't turn around. He was staring at the black void of the New York skyline. "A laundry truck," Damon whispered. A low, dark chuckle rumbled in his chest. "She left the Gala in a couture gown and escaped in a garbage truck. She is... resourceful." "We have the license plate, Alpha. We can track them." "No," Damon cut him off. He turned, and the gold in his eyes had darkened to the color of old amber. The Sickness was eating at him—a dull, throbbing ache in his marrow—but the adrenaline of the hunt was masking the pain. "Verona—*Aria*—isn't stupid. She knows we’re tracking the truck. It’s a decoy." He walked over to the shattered window, the wind whipping his hair. "She has Julian with her," Damon analyzed, his mind working like a supercomputer. "Julian is Lycan. He has resources. He won't drive her out of state; it takes too long. He’ll try to fly." "The commercial airports are monitored," Silas noted. "She won't fly commercial. Julian has a private hangar at Teterboro." Damon pulled out his phone. The screen cracked under the pressure of his grip. "Call the Air Traffic Control. Ground everything." "Alpha," Silas hesitated. "We don't have the authority to ground private flights without a federal warrant. The human laws..." "BUY the airport, Silas!" Damon roared, the Alpha tone shattering the remaining glass in the window frame. "I don't care if it costs a billion dollars. Buy the tower. Buy the tarmac. Shut. It. Down." He strode past Silas, grabbing his jacket. "And call the Shadow Guard. Tell them to bring the heavy tranquilizers." Silas went pale. "Tranquilizers? Alpha, for the rogue?" "No," Damon said, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "For me. Because when I find her... I don't know if I can stop myself from killing everyone standing between us." --- **TETERBORO AIRPORT - PRIVATE HANGAR 4** **11:55 PM** The laundry truck rattled to a halt behind a desolate, rusted hangar on the far side of the airfield. Inside the cargo hold, the air was stale and cold. Aria pushed the heavy lid of the trunk open. "We're here," she whispered. Leo climbed out first, adjusting his glasses. He checked his wrist tablet instantly. "Signal is jammed. We have zero connectivity." "They’re jamming the local cell towers," Julian cursed, kicking the back doors open. "Damon moves fast. Faster than I remember." They jumped out onto the tarmac. The wind was howling, biting through Aria’s thin hoodie. She pulled Zoe close, shielding the sleeping girl from the cold. "The jet is prepped," Julian said, pointing to a sleek, black Gulfstream waiting on the runway, its engines already whining with potential power. "Once we are in the air, he can't touch us. International airspace laws will protect us." "Run," Aria commanded. They sprinted across the tarmac. The distance felt like miles. Aria’s heart hammered against her ribs, syncing with the frantic rhythm of her footsteps. *Don't look back. Don't look back.* They reached the metal stairs of the jet. The pilot, a man named Russo who had worked for Julian for years, was waiting at the top. "Mr. Julian!" Russo shouted over the roar of the engines. "We have a problem! Tower just denied our clearance. They revoked our flight plan!" "Fly anyway!" Julian yelled back, pushing Aria up the stairs. "I’ll pay the fine!" "It’s not just the clearance!" Russo pointed toward the entrance of the airfield. "Look!" Aria turned. A convoy of black SUVs smashed through the chain-link fence, tires screeching on the asphalt. They weren't police vehicles. They were unmarked. Military grade. The lead car drifted sideways, blocking the runway. The doors flew open, and six men stepped out. They weren't wearing suits. They were wearing tactical gear. Aria’s blood ran cold. She recognized the crest on their chest plates. It wasn't the Dark Moon Pack. It was a balanced scale made of silver bones. **The High Council Enforcement Unit.** "Damon didn't call the police," Aria realized, horror dawning on her. "He called the Council." "He didn't," Julian snarled, stepping in front of Aria and the kids. His eyes flashed a brilliant, electric blue—the sign of his Lycan heritage. "Damon wants you back. The Council wants you dead. He wouldn't expose you to them. This is someone else." The lead soldier stepped forward. He held a megaphone. "VERONA STONE. JULIAN BLACKWOOD. SURRENDER IMMEDIATELY." "Why?" Julian shouted back, his voice amplified by his wolf power. "We have broken no laws!" "You are harboring unregistered biological anomalies," the soldier replied, his mechanical voice echoing across the tarmac. He pointed a weapon—not a gun, but a pulse rifle designed to disrupt wolf nervous systems—directly at the twins. "Surrender the children for genetic testing. Or we will open fire." Zoe woke up in Aria’s arms. She saw the guns. She saw the men. "Bad men," Zoe whispered. The air around her began to warp. Small pebbles on the ground started to float. "Zoe, no," Aria hissed, terrified. If Zoe used her power now, in front of the Council, they would dissect her in a lab. "Get on the plane," Julian ordered low. "I'll handle them." "There are six of them, Julian! And they have pulse rifles!" "I said GO!" Julian didn't wait. He ripped off his jumpsuit. Bones cracked, muscles tore and reshaped. In two seconds, the handsome man was gone. In his place stood a massive, midnight-blue Lycan—seven feet tall, walking on two legs, with claws like butcher knives. He roared—a sound that shook the metal hull of the plane—and charged the soldiers. The soldiers opened fire. *Zzzzt! Zzzzt!* Blue energy beams slammed into Julian’s chest, burning his fur, but he didn't stop. He barreled into the lead car, flipping it over with brute strength. "Go! Go! Go!" Russo grabbed Aria’s arm and hauled her into the cabin. He slammed the door shut and locked it. "Buckle up!" Russo screamed, sprinting to the cockpit. "We're taking off!" "We can't leave him!" Aria screamed, pressing her face against the porthole window. Outside, it was a m******e. Julian was fighting like a demon, tearing through the tactical unit. But more cars were coming. "Mom," Leo said. His voice was trembling. "We have to go. Uncle Julian calculated the odds. This is the only way." The jet lurched forward. Russo gunned the engines to maximum. The plane shot down the runway, swerving around the overturned SUV. Aria watched as Julian was surrounded. He took a hit to the leg, falling to one knee, but he kept swinging, buying them every precious second. As the plane lifted off the ground, defying gravity, Aria saw one last vehicle pull up to the scene. A sleek black sedan. Damon stepped out. He wasn't wearing tactical gear. He was in his ruined suit, his hand bandaged. He walked calmly into the chaos. The Council soldiers stopped firing. Even Julian, bleeding and panting, paused. Damon looked up. He looked straight at the plane climbing into the night sky. He didn't scream. He didn't chase. He simply raised his hand, pointing a finger at the retreating jet. *I see you.* Then, he turned to the Council soldiers. Aria couldn't hear what he said, but she saw the result. Damon grabbed the Council leader by the throat and lifted him off the ground with one hand. The plane banked, and the scene disappeared into the clouds. Aria collapsed into the leather seat, clutching her children. Her heart was beating so hard it hurt. "Who called them?" Aria whispered to herself. "If not Damon... who knew we were here?" Leo tapped on his tablet. "Mom." "Not now, Leo." "Mom, you need to see this." Aria looked at the screen. It was a breaking news alert. **[LEAKED: FAMOUS DESIGNER 'VERONA' ACCUSED OF CORPORATE ESPIONAGE AND CHILD ABDUCTION.]** "It's not just the news," Leo said, scrolling down. "Your bank accounts are frozen. The company assets are locked. And... there is a bounty." "A bounty?" "A Rogue Bounty," Leo said grimly. "Issued by the Elder Council. 50 million dollars for the capture of the 'Fake Identity Wolf' known as Verona." Aria stared at the screen. It wasn't Damon. Damon wanted to capture her. The Council wanted to destroy her. Someone had tipped them off. Someone who knew her identity. Someone who hated her enough to burn her world down. *Elena.* Aria’s eyes narrowed. The fear evaporated, replaced by a cold, hard rage that felt suspiciously like her Celestial power waking up. "They want a war?" Aria whispered, hugging Zoe tighter. "Fine. They froze my money. They hurt my friend. They hunted my children." She looked out the window at the dark world below. "Russo," Aria called out toward the cockpit. "Change course." "To where, Ma'am? Zurich is compromised!" "I know," Aria said. She wiped a tear from her cheek and stood up. She looked like a queen in exile. "We aren't going to the safe house. We're going to the one place the Council won't look. The one place they are afraid to go." "Where?" Leo asked. Aria smiled. It wasn't a nice smile. "The Badlands," she said. "Set a course for Las Vegas. We’re going to find the Rogue King." --- **MEANWHILE - TETERBORO TARMAC** Damon dropped the unconscious Council soldier onto the asphalt. He turned to Julian. The Lycan was kneeling on the ground, bleeding from six different pulse wounds. He was shifting back to human form, naked and vulnerable. Damon walked over to him. He should kill him. This man had touched his mate. This man had run with his children. But he had also defended them. Damon had seen Julian take a bullet meant for the jet. Damon took off his suit jacket and threw it onto the shivering, bloody man. "Get up," Damon commanded. Julian coughed up blood, looking up with a defiant sneer. "Go to hell, Woland." "She’s gone," Damon said, his voice void of emotion. "And the Council is hunting her. You can bleed out here on the pavement, or you can tell me where she is going." "I won't betray her." "It's not betrayal," Damon knelt down, his gold eyes burning with a terrifying intensity. "Look at the soldiers, Julian. This wasn't a retrieval mission. It was an execution. Someone wants her dead." Julian froze. He looked at the Council crests on the unconscious men. "Elena," Julian rasped. "She must have tipped the Elders." "Then we have a common enemy," Damon stood up and offered his hand to the man he hated most in the world. "Get up, Lycan. We have a plane to catch."
