chapter 4 The Offer

537 Words
Morning sunlight spilled through the thirty-second-floor windows of Lu Tower, painting long gold lines across the marble. Ivy had never seen an office so silent, so disciplined. Even the sound of her own footsteps felt too loud. Rose stood before the glass wall, hands tucked in her pockets, eyes on the skyline. “Shanghai wakes up early,” she said without turning. “Every hour counts here.” Ivy nodded quickly. “Yes— I mean, Rose.” The Alpha looked over her shoulder, one brow slightly raised. “Good. You learn fast.” For the rest of the morning, Rose gave instructions that felt more like commands carved in stone— meetings to schedule, reports to collect, calls to filter. Yet every time Ivy stumbled, Rose’s voice softened just a little, correcting instead of scolding. By noon, Ivy had almost stopped shaking. Later that day, Rose summoned her to the private conference room. On the table lay a thick folder embossed with the Su Corporation seal. “This,” Rose began, “is the full acquisition contract. When I sign this, the Su family will keep its name, but I’ll control the board.” She looked at Ivy. “You understand what that means?” Ivy hesitated. “It means my father’s company will survive… but under your control.” “Exactly.” Rose’s eyes held hers. “You’ll work directly beside me to restructure it. In exchange, I’ll make sure your family’s employees keep their jobs.” “Why me?” Ivy asked before she could stop herself. “There are hundreds of people more qualified.” Rose closed the folder. “Because I saw the way you handled humiliation without breaking. Most people at that gala were pretending to be strong. You actually were.” The words left Ivy speechless. No one had ever spoken of her strength before. Rose stepped closer, the scent of her perfume calm, steady, deliberate. “But understand this, Ivy— working for me won’t be easy. The business world is filled with wolves. Stay close. Do what I say. And never let anyone see you flinch.” Ivy met her gaze. “I’ll try.” “Don’t try,” Rose corrected softly. “Do.” That night, after the offices emptied, Rose lingered by her desk, watching Ivy organize files with quiet concentration. The city lights reflected in the glass behind her like a constellation. Yun entered with a tablet. “Miss Lu— the board is asking if you’re serious about keeping that Omega as your assistant.” Rose didn’t look away from Ivy. “Tell them she’s not just my assistant,” she said evenly. “She’s my investment.” Yun hesitated. “Investment in what?” Rose allowed herself the faintest smile. “In change.” Downstairs, Ivy waited by the elevator, holding the folder to her chest. For the first time in years, she felt hope— fragile but real. The world that had always treated her like a shadow was beginning to open, one door at a time . And somewhere above her, behind a wall of glass and power, an Alpha who was supposed to be heartless had already started to feel.
