Alpha Henry’s POV
“Alpha Henry ShadowWaters,” The grey elder’s voice rang out. “The sacrifice has been made. The blood has been given. Now you must drink, and the curse will be broken. Your wolf will emerge. Your line will be restored.”
I knelt before the Sacred Stone. The ground was cold under my knees, and I could see the faint stains where Nova’s blood had soaked in the night before. The grooves were still dark with it.
The grey wolf held the chalice out to me with both hands.
I took it. I looked down at the blood inside and saw my reflection staring back at me. Nova’s blood fetched from the previous day. I lifted the chalice to my lips and drank.
Cold and thick, the blood coated my throat as I swallowed. I forced myself to keep drinking, to drain every last drop until the chalice was empty. When I finally lowered it, I could feel the blood sitting heavy in my stomach, making me want to vomit again.
But cruelty makes a true Alpha
I would not show weakness.
The grey wolf took the chalice from my hands and stepped back. “It is done,” he announced. “The rite is complete.”
The witch whispered some incantation in my ears. “It is finished!”
The pack began to stir, excitement rippling through them like wind across water. This was the moment their cursed Alpha would finally prove himself worthy.
I stayed kneeling, my hands resting on my thighs, and tried to feel something. Anything. Some sign that the curse was breaking.
There was nothing.
Then I caught movement from the corner of my eye.
Jax stood at the edge of the gathering, just outside the circle of torchlight. My younger brother had his arms crossed over his chest, his head tilted slightly to one side. He wasn’t bowing like the others. He wasn’t showing any reverence at all.
Instead, he was smiling. It felt like she knew something that I didn’t. His smile made me feel cold in my chest. There was satisfaction in that smile. Mockery. Like he was watching a play he had already seen the ending to.
Jax was everything that I could only dream of. Jax was strong and fierce. He fought in wars while I sat in council meetings. He defended the pack with his claws and teeth while I was just a claim to the throne.
The pack loved him. Respected him. Followed him.
And in that moment, standing there with that predator’s smile on his face, he looked less like my brother and more like someone waiting for me to fail. A villain in my story
I tore my eyes away from him and focused on what I was supposed to be feeling.
I hope to feel the curse breaking. My wolf emerging. Power flooding through me.
But there was still nothing.
“Form the circle,” The grey wolf commanded.
The pack obeyed immediately, stepping back to create a wide ring around me and the Sacred Stone. They left me alone in the center, exposed under the full moon that hung bright and silver overhead. Its light bathed everything in pale white, making the clearing look almost holy.
At the far edge of the circle, drummers took their positions. Six of them, each holding massive drums that would beat the rhythm of my transformation. The sound would call my wolf forward. Would announce to the territory that their Alpha had finally risen.
They waited, sticks raised, ready to begin the moment my wolf answered.
I closed my eyes and reached inward, searching for the presence that should have been there all along. The wolf that every Alpha was born with. The beast that made us more than human.
For twenty-eight years, I had felt nothing. An empty space where my wolf should have been. A silence that marked me as broken. Cursed. An omega even if truth be told
But now, with Nova’s blood in my stomach and the ritual complete, something stirred.
Power surged in my body
Yes!
This was it!
It hit me like lightning, fierce and overwhelming and so sudden I gasped. My heart beat against my ribs. My breath stopped and started at intervals. Every nerve in my body came alive at once, burning with an energy I had never felt before.
This was it.
This was my wolf.
Finally! I will know what it feels like
The pack must have seen something change in me because a ripple of excitement moved through them. Someone shouted. People else cheered. The drummers readied themselves, preparing to announce my transformation to the world.
I kept my eyes closed and reached for that power, pulling it toward me. Welcoming it. My wolf was finally answering. Finally coming to me after a lifetime of silence.
The energy built higher. Stronger. My muscles tensed. My bones ached with the promise of shifting. I could feel my wolf rising inside me, pushing toward the surface, ready to emerge.
Suddenly it stopped
The power faltered. It went down like a deflating balloon.
My eyes snapped open.
The energy wasn’t building anymore. It was draining. Pouring out of me as fast as it had come, leaving me cold and empty and more broken than before.
No!
No, this wasn’t right.
I reached for it desperately, trying to hold onto whatever was slipping away, but it was like trying to catch water in my bare hands. The power kept flowing out, taking everything with it.
“Please! Please!” I cried
The wind shifted.
It came from nowhere, violent and wrong. The torches guttered and went out, throwing everyone into darkness. The full moon disappeared inch by inch until it was gone completely. Above us, dark clouds rolled across the sky.
The pack screamed in fear.
A low rumble echoed overhead. Thunder that sounded like a warning.
I looked down at the Sacred Stone beneath me and watched in horror as a c***k appeared on its surface. With a sound like breaking bones, the stone shattered.
Pieces of it exploded outward, sharp fragments scattering across the clearing. Someone screamed, “My eyes!” The pack broke formation, people stumbling backward, trying to get away from whatever was happening.
This wasn’t how a broken curse was supposed to look.
This was a bad omen.
I stayed kneeling in the center of it all, my hands pressed against the ground. My whole body shook. The power was completely gone now. My wolf had been right there. Right there. And now there was nothing but silence. I am such a failure that even my wolf rejected me.
The ritual had failed.
The curse had not been lifted.
I had killed Nova for nothing.
Movement caught my attention again. Jax stepped forward out of the shadows, his face still wearing that smile. But it was wider now. It was like this was exactly what he had been waiting for.
My vision started to fade. The ground tilted beneath me.
I tried to stand, but my legs wouldn’t hold me. My hands slipped on the broken stone. I was falling.
The world was spinning.
Nova’s warning echoed in my head one last time.
“My blood will remember.”
I lost consciousness
