Chapter 4

Alpha Henry’s POV “Ughhh! Spit in my throat, Jax! Harder!” “Yeah, good girl…! You like it?” “Yes. Yes, Jax. I am your slut!” My brother growl. “Like this?” “God, yes.” They weren’t even trying to hide it anymore. Four years of sneaking around, and now they’d stopped caring who knew. The servants would hear. The guards would hear. By morning, the entire palace would know the Luna was in Jax’s bed. They would all talk I pulled the pillow over my head, but it didn’t help. Her moans penetrated everything. “Give me an heir,” she gasped. “Please. Give me what that omega Alpha never could.” Something twisted in my chest. I wasn’t jealous, I lost that ability a long time ago. What I felt was just a dull ache that might have been grief if I still remembered how to feel it. Four years married, and Gommet’s belly had stayed flat. No child. No heir. No promise of continuity for the pack. We’d blamed the curse. Then we’d blamed each other. She’d visited healers in secret. I knew because I’d found the herbs hidden in her chambers. Maybe it was me. Maybe I was too cursed to create life. Or maybe it was her. I remembered something Morgan had said. Morgan was our residential witch; the same witch that helped me find the white wolf had said once, years ago. She’d looked at Gommet and laughed. “Barren soil bears no fruit, no matter how much seed you plant.” Gommet had threatened to have the witch killed, but I hadn’t allowed that. Morgan was my childhood friend. Now I wondered if she’d been right. Another moan followed by the rhythmic thud of a headboard hitting stone and clapping I threw off the blankets and got dressed. I couldn’t stay here. Even though my heart had grown cold, I couldn’t lie in the dark listening to my wife beg my brother for the child she’d never give me. A few guards watched me go, their expressions blank on purpose. They’d heard everything too. By tomorrow, the whispers would be everywhere. I had worn a cloak and covered my face so as not to be recognised easily. It worked, but if you guys still recognised me. ‘The Mad Omega Alpha, cuckolded in his own palace.’ I walked faster. I didn’t have a destination in mind. I just walked, letting my feet carry me wherever they wanted. The forest swallowed me quickly. Trees pressed in on both sides, their branches blocking out the moon. I should have brought a torch. My thoughts spiraled. What was the point of living? Perhaps I should just end it all tonight. Gommet would be relieved. Jax would get his greatest wish, to take over the throne. If I die, they will all be happy. I made up my mind. I would make sure that I died that night. I would rid everyone of me. They would all be happy, my wife, my brother, the elders and pack. Nova’s face flickered in the shadows between trees. “You’re not real,” I said out loud. She vanished. I kept walking. Tonight everything will end! My curse! My madness! My failures! My boots crunched against dead leaves. An owl hooted somewhere overhead. The forest was alive with small sounds, rustling and creaking and breathing. I found what I was looking for near the old gully. Below the cliff, sharp rocks and rushing water lay fifty feet down. The pack used to come here for coming-of-age ceremonies, back when we had enough young wolves reaching maturity to make ceremonies worth holding. Now it was just empty. Well, this was perfect. I stood at the edge and looked down. The moonlight caught the water, making it shine silver between the jagged rocks. It would be quick. A fall, I will die instantly; if the moon goddess is merciful, and if my evil doesn’t catch up with me. Then the water would wash my body a way into the great river, saving everyone the responsibility of a proper burial The pack would mourn for exactly one day. Then they’d crown Jax. Jax would marry Gommet and they will f**k so louldy without me feeling insulted. Everyone would celebrate. Finally, a real Alpha. But Gommet would wear black and pretend to grieve. Then she’d marry my brother within the month and give him the heir she’d denied me. I took a step closer to the edge. Rocks crumbled under my boot, tumbling down into darkness. Just one more step. “Do it,” I whispered to myself. “Just do it.” My foot lifted. Voices. Sharp and urgent. The clash of metal against metal. I froze, my foot hovering over empty air. The sounds were coming from somewhere east, maybe half a mile away. A fight. I fought the urge to go take a look. What did I care if someone was fighting in my territory? Let them kill each other. Let the whole world burn. But something pulled at me. A need I couldn’t name. My foot came back down on solid ground. “Damn it,” I breathed. The sounds grew louder. Someone shouted. Metal rang against metal again, followed by a cry of pain. I turned away from the cliff and started walking toward the noise. My hands were shaking. My chest felt tight. Part of me was furious at the interruption. I’d been so close. So ready to finally end this. But my feet kept moving forward. It felt like I was being controlled by a remote The sounds of fighting grew clearer. I sensed multiple attackers. I started running. The sounds grew louder as I approached. Grunts. Curses. Someone shouting orders. The metallic ring of blades meeting. I burst through a line of trees till I finally got to the place of the fight. Five men surrounded a cloaked figure. Rogues, from the smell of them. Wild wolves with no pack, no honor. They circled their prey like dogs, weapons raised. The cloaked figure fought back with brutal efficiency. From the grunts and stature, I could tell it was a woman; even though her face was covered as she was clogged. A dagger flashed in the moonlight, finding flesh. One rogue went down screaming, clutching his throat. Another lunged forward, and the figure spun, driving an elbow into his face with a c***k that echoed through the clearing. She was really skilled. But there were too many. The figure was fast, skilled, clearly trained. But outnumbered. One rogue caught the figure’s arm, yanking them off balance. Another moved in from behind, raising a blade. I was just going to watch, Instead something pushed me, and I showed myself The moment my eyes found the cloaked figure, everything stopped. Something slammed into my chest with the force of lightning, knocking every thought from my head except one. I know this feeling. I have had it before. “Mate,” I whispered to this woman, and she whispered back at me. Both of us in unison The bond ignited like wildfire. Instant and overwhelming.. I didn’t know this person. Couldn’t see their face. But my wolf started growling “Mine! Protect! Mine!” For the first time in twenty-eight years, it was there. Fully there, surging through me with violent force. Power exploded in my veins. I didn’t have time to think. Didn’t have time to question. My body moved on instinct. My bones cracked as I transformed It hurt. God, it hurts. Like being torn apart and rebuilt in seconds. But I didn’t care. My wolf had waited a lifetime for this moment. The shift completed in a heartbeat. My wolf was big and blue, easily touring every other rough who dared to turn wolf. I landed on four paws, massive and furious and finally whole. My vision sharpened. My sense of smell intensified. I could feel every heartbeat in the clearing, hear every breath. Is this what it feels like? The rogues froze, their eyes going wide with fear. I snarled, and the sound that came out of my throat was pure Alpha dominance. Then I attacked. The first rogue didn’t even have time to scream. My jaws closed around his throat and crushed. Hot blood filled my mouth as I threw his body aside and lunged for the next one. Claws. Teeth. Pure primal rage. Nothing existed except the need to protect. To kill anything that threatened what was mine. The cloaked figure had stopped fighting. She stood frozen, watching me tear through their attackers with horrified fascination. The last rogue turned to flee, but I caught him before he could even move and I killed him, opening him from shoulder to hip. He collapsed in a heap Now bodies lay scattered around me, blood soaking into the earth. My wolf was there. Inside me. Awake and present and real. The curse had broken. This mate bond was stronger than anything I’d ever felt with Nova. But I already had a Luna. Gommet wore the title. Wore the crown. We were married in front of the entire pack. But my wolf didn’t care about the questions. It only cared about finding the woman. ‘Mate. Find mate,’ I turned toward the cloaked figure. They took a step back, hand raised like they were trying to calm a wild animal. I looked at the cloaked figure, trying to make sense of what had just happened. Trying to understand why my chest felt like it was being pulled toward her. I took a step forward. They bolted, disappearing into the trees, moving faster than possible. I chased after, but she was gone. I sank to my knees, overwhelmed. My hands were shaking. My whole body was shaking. The curse had broken. W hich meant everything I’d done to Nova had been for nothing. A sound escaped my throat. Half laugh, half sob. But Who was this woman? Where had she gone? Will I ever find her again?
