Before I could say anything, his phone rang in his pocket.
He pulled it out and glanced at the screen. Something in his face changed for a second, and I noticed it. Then he looked at me, already stepping back after collecting his suit.
“I’ll call you later like I said. I love you.”
The words came out quickly and felt empty, like he was just saying them out of habit. He was already walking away before he finished. He got into his car, slammed the door, and started the engine. His car drove off, the taillights disappearing around the corner before I could even blink.
I stood in the cool night air, staring at the empty street where his car had been. The only sound was my breathing and the faint noise of the city far away.
