“I"ve heard Monk. Nathan has some of his records,” Dorothy said. “I didn"t understand it.” “Sometime we"ll play him, Dorothy,” Chris said. “I"m glad I went. I love Jazz,” Mr. Monty said. “It sounds wonderful,” Dorothy said. “Nathan told me that you introduced him to Jazz.” “Chris, Nathan,” Mr. Monty said. “Play something by Gershwin.” The band was rehearsing the next afternoon for the forthcoming Jazz Festival, and Chris had brought his tenor. Ma excused herself, and went to the kitchen to wash up. “This might sound a bit rough,” Nathan said. He exchanged a look with Chris. They preferred to play with bass and drums. Chris sounded a flurry of notes from his tenor. Nathan picked up the Bach, fingered the valves and fitted a mute to the bell; he nodded to Chris. “You ready, Mr. Monty?
