Chapter 3: The Weight of the Truth The air in the room felt thick, suffocating, as Elena stood frozen, gripping the journal as if it could somehow anchor her to the earth. Luca’s presence loomed like a storm cloud, dark and foreboding, yet there was something in his eyes—an understanding, a pain—that stopped her from pushing him away. "Tell me the truth," she demanded, her voice shaking, though she fought to keep it steady. She couldn’t let him see how fragile she was becoming, how this whole twisted world she was uncovering felt like it was unraveling her from the inside out. Luca took a slow step forward, his eyes never leaving hers. There was a weight to his silence that made her pulse race. It was as though he was measuring her, waiting to see if she would crumble under the pressure. And the worst part? She wasn’t sure she could hold herself together much longer. “The truth is,” he started, his voice quiet, almost too soft for the heavy words he was about to say, “your father did what he thought was best. He pushed you away to keep you safe… from a past he couldn’t escape.” She swallowed hard, the words swirling in her mind, mixing with the ache in her chest. “Safe?” The bitterness of the word tasted like ash on her tongue. "Safe from what?" Luca looked away briefly, his jaw tightening. The weight of his gaze seemed to speak volumes, as though there was so much he couldn’t say, or perhaps didn’t want to say. But Elena wasn’t in the mood for cryptic words. She needed answers. She needed to know the truth. "Your family is not just wealthy, Elena," he said, his tone almost regretful, as though revealing the rest of the puzzle would tear apart whatever fragile thread of hope she had left. "There are things your father got involved in long before you were born. Things that threaten not just his life—but yours as well." Her breath hitched, the words sinking deep into her soul. Threaten her life? She shook her head, denying it, even though a part of her knew it was true. “No. This... this can’t be right. My father—he loved me. He was always there for me when I was younger. He wasn’t some criminal." The truth hit harder than she could have ever imagined. She wanted to run from it, but her feet felt frozen to the ground, her hands trembling. The life she had known, the father she had worshipped, was falling apart before her eyes, and she was powerless to stop it. Luca stepped closer, his voice low, like he was trying to keep her from breaking. “It wasn’t love that drove him to make those choices, Elena. It was guilt. Guilt for the things he did, things that were beyond your control. He believed you were better off not knowing the truth—better off living a life without the blood on his hands.” Her pulse quickened, and she felt the room spin. Blood on his hands. The words echoed in her mind, as if they were trying to claw their way into her soul, forcing her to understand something she wasn’t ready to face. She thought of the man she had known—the father who had held her when she cried, who had taught her how to walk, how to read, how to be strong. And now, he was a stranger. “What did he do, Luca?” she whispered, the words barely leaving her lips. Her body was taut with fear, but she needed to hear it, even if it broke her. Luca closed his eyes for a moment, as though searching for the right words. "He made enemies, Elena. Powerful ones. People who would stop at nothing to destroy him—and anyone who stood in their way. Your family’s fortune was built on secrets that are much darker than you can imagine. And you, Elena, you were the only thing he couldn’t afford to lose." Her heart shattered, the weight of his words pressing down on her chest. She could feel it now—the suffocating grip of the truth, the awful realization that her father’s rejection hadn’t been about her at all. It had been about them—the people who wanted to hurt her, who had already taken so much from her. “You were always in danger, Elena,” Luca continued, his voice soft, almost tender. “Your father didn’t want you to carry the burden of the family’s mistakes. He thought he could protect you by keeping you away from it all. But I’m afraid that protection was only temporary.” Tears burned behind her eyes, but Elena refused to let them fall. She couldn’t. Not now. Not when she had just found the first piece of the puzzle that had eluded her for years. The rage that bubbled up inside her was a new, foreign feeling—one she didn’t know how to control. He lied to me. He pushed me away because of lies. But I deserve to know the truth. I deserve to know who I am. Her fingers clenched around the journal, and she turned to face Luca, her heart pounding in her ears. "I need to find him," she said, her voice firm, stronger than it had ever been before. "I need to ask him why. Why he couldn’t trust me. Why he chose to leave me in the dark." Luca hesitated, his gaze darkening. "You can’t go to him, Elena. Not yet. There’s more at stake than just your questions. You need to understand the danger you're in before you make any decisions." But Elena’s mind was already racing, and there was no turning back. She had come this far—she wasn’t going to stop now. Not when the truth was just out of reach. Not when her entire world had been built on lies. “I don’t care,” she said, the words coming out harsher than she intended. “I’ll face it. Whatever it is. I’m not running anymore.” Luca’s eyes searched hers, a deep, knowing look in his gaze. "Then you’ll need to be prepared for everything. The truth isn’t easy to accept, Elena. And when it all falls apart... you might not be able to put it back together again." “I’ll take that risk,” she whispered, more to herself than to him. Luca nodded slowly, his expression unreadable. “Very well. But remember, I’m not your enemy. I’m here to help. Just... trust me.” Elena’s heart was a battlefield, torn between anger and fear, grief and hope. But in that moment, she knew one thing for sure—she couldn’t turn back now. The truth had already started to consume her, and there was no escaping it. Not anymore. --- ---
