In the cemetery there were several mausoleums with iron gates, securing steps leading down and into underground burial chambers. There was also the new drainage system Sebastian Sexton had built as part of the contract to refurbish and maintain the old cemetery. People said they saw wraiths, disembodied souls, vague and shadowy evanescent forms, whisping in and out of the cemetery. Those who lived in the houses that backed onto the cemetery were convinced the spirits had been disturbed following the civil engineering works; a necessity they understood, but sacrilege just the same. Neighbouring houses would go onto the market and not sell.
