Chapter 6: The Offer

1360 Words

I received Daniel's offer the next morning, printed on the back of his company's proposed redevelopment plan. He asked me to meet at the Harbor Inn's small breakfast room. I arrived early and chose a table near the window. The room smelled like coffee and wet wool. Daniel came in carrying a folder and two cups. "I didn't know how you take it anymore," he said, setting one cup in front of me. "Black." "I remembered." I didn't pick it up. "What do you want?" He sat across from me. "I want to give the council a responsible plan." "The council has the assessment." "I'm not asking you to change it. I'm asking you to help with what comes next." He slid the folder across the table. Inside was a revised concept plan. The Rialto's lobby and marquee would be preserved as a public entrance.
