Alpha Xavier’s POV
It’s been years since I’ve worn a tie, or anything as serious as the foreign two-piece tuxedo I have on right now.
“I can't believe my eyes.” Steve bellows as he walks into my room, holding my gold cufflinks.
“Did you find it?” I ask, ignoring Steve’s wide grin as he inspects me excitedly. He hands over the cufflinks and watches me keenly as I put them on with much difficulty.
Sweat patches are forming on my head already, and I haven't even gone out for the dinner party yet. Who knew dressing up was a high-intensity cardio workout?
“I wasn't this nervous on my wedding day.” Steve comments, stifling a laugh. “You're sweating like a kid going to his prom night.”
This time around, I join Steve in laughing at myself. If I’m being honest, it’s been a while since I’ve been excited about anything.
Groaning, I toss away the tie and look back at the mirror. I’m fine without a messed-up tie. I loosen a button and adjust myself in the fancy tux.
“It's not your wedding, sir.” Steve teases from behind.
“But it's a dinner night nonetheless.” I defend myself.
Steve laughs and then picks up the tie on the floor. He helps me knot it and then pats my shoulder. “I'm so happy for you, Alpha.”
I lift a brow. “Why?”
He lowers his gaze and a sad smile arches his lips. “You're much brighter these days. I hope the miracle that’s healing you will also clear the dark clouds hovering over this wretched town.”
I pat his shoulder as well and smile. “It's probably just the new wine’s taste.”
We both break into laughter, but deep down I understand him. I feel it too. The voices in my head are not as loud as before.
Is it a miracle? I doubt it. The excitement will fade off soon, and the Doctor will be out of this town as soon as she helps us. But temporary bliss is bliss regardless, and I’ll choose awkward excitement over drowning in my own guilt.
By the time we get outside, Jayda and her personal assistant, Sir Koch, are waiting by the limousine.
“I thought you would have gone already.” I say, planting a kiss on her blushed cheek.
She’s wearing a bright red gown, revealing her eccentric curves and model-like collarbones.
“Wow,” she says, giving me a head-to-toe scan before winking at me. “You’re too stunning, baby. Poor Ms. Doctor might have a heart attack from jealousy.”
She laughs at her own joke and then looks at Koch, who then joins her with a quiet laugh.
Balking at the idea of the Doctor being jealous, I scoff. “A person still needs a heart to get jealous, and I can swear Dr. Winter lacks a beating heart.”
Jayda hums and a sinister smile forms on her powdered face. “Hmm.”
Steve clears his throat.
“Let’s get going before we miss the event.”
##################
The glass doors sweep open, and the chatter in the ceremony hall fades.
Doctor Winter steps into the light, wearing a dress that looks like liquid gold, dripping down her skin. My eyes lose caution and wander down the high slit of her gown, giving a clear glimpse of her toned thunder thighs.
Click-clack.
Her heels echo off the floor like drumbeats. Heads turn and drinks stay mid-air as eyes follow her across the hall. Including mine.
Jayda tugs at me with her elbow. “Pass me the mic.”
Absentmindedly, I hand over the mic to her and she clears her throat, drawing the crowd’s attention to her.
She cat-walks to a raised podium, stepping right under the spotlight. Her hair is dazzling under the lights and her sparkle radiates all over.
“Hello everyone,” Jayda announces, tossing her hair dramatically to the back. “Welcome to this lovely event.”
She looks at the Doctor and smiles. “I'm so happy you made it, Dr. Winter. Tonight will be amazing, as I've arranged all the best bachelors in WestMoon.”
I smile at Jayda. Although she’s a lover of attention, she loves helping others. I'm sure the Doctor will be delighted by my Luna’s effort.
My eyes turn to the Doctor, and her face has become gloomy and tight.
Even when offered a grand surprise like this, this lady can't afford to smile.
I grunt, unwilling to let the Doctor’s ungratefulness slide by.
“Round of applause as we welcome the Southern Doctor on stage.” Jayda announces, a fixed smile plastered on her face.
Dr. Winter’s face squeezes tight with annoyance, and she sticks up her middle finger before dashing out. I grab her hand as she waltzes past me.
“What else do you want?” She snaps, her eyes intense and heated.
“I-I don't understand.” I stutter, confusion weighing me down.
“Is this the thank-you dinner you promised?” She bites out, her face an inch away from mine. Fury heats up the air between us.
“Don't you like it?”
She scoffs and points her finger at me. The crowd gasps as they witness this taboo.
“Stay clear of me, Alpha.” She shakes her head, pain written in bold letters in her eyes. “Silly me, I should have known better. Once a jerk, forever a jerk.”
Now she's talking as though she’s known me for years.
She pushes my hand away and runs out of the hall.
Jayda laughs out hysterically, holding out her phone. She's been recording all this while.
“Oh my! This will trend for the next month. The sad tale of the pompous Southern quack doctor.” Her laughter rings throughout the hall.
I bite down on my lip and grasp her arm, pulling her closer. “What stunt did you just pull?”
She giggles in my hold and angles her chin up. “Come on, no one deserves to be single. I was just trying to help.”
My hold on her arm tightens, but as soon as she winces, I let go. A grunt rumbles in my throat as I stare into her eyes. “This is far from over, Jayda.”
The smile fades from her face, and as I walk away, I hear her rambling on.
Steve tries stopping me, but I brush his hand away, dashing outside after Dr. Winter.
I find her by the pool, a drink in hand.
My pace slows as I approach her from behind.
“Why are you here?” She asks without turning back.
I keep walking until I’m a few meters from where she's standing. The wind plays with her vanilla hair and fills the air around with the scent of her heat.
I can sniff her annoyance from a mile away.
“I didn't know Jayda was going to throw a mating dinner.” I explain, walking to her side.
Her eyes don't flinch, and she keeps staring into the turquoise blue pool water. I doubt she knows it, but her eyes are the exact color of the water; brighter and more vibrant than the lit-up pool itself.
“Well, I guess that makes everything fine, and I didn't just get embarrassed like a desperate old lady in need of a mate.” She's fiery hot right now. If I could see her anger, I’m sure it's coming off her like steam in a sauna.
Our hands graze and my skin freezes. It's a terribly cold night, and with the sleeveless gown she has on, she'll be sneezing in no time.
Her breaths are shaky and her hands are shivering.
“Now I see why you hate parties.”
Her eyes dash toward me, and I can feel those piercing blue depths boring into the side of my head. She snorts and then laughs softly; the titillating sound of it sending warmth to my chest.
“One more awful party to add to my trauma list.” She says, shaking her head.
Taking in a deep breath, I risk holding her hand. She stiffens up and raises her brow. “What are you doing?”
I smile and then lead her away from the pool. I stop a few footsteps away from the steaming pool. The lights are dim here, but her eyes still glow like little bulbs.
“Remember, madame, you owe me a dance.” I’m looking right into her eyes and I’m drowning in them. I can't even bring myself to look away. I can't save myself at this point.
She looks away and chuckles. “You want to embarrass me more. I'm a terrible dancer. I’ll step on your toes.”
I tilt my head and scrunch up my nose to make a funny face. “I like a broken toe every now and then.”
We both laugh, and as the laughter fades off, my heart tightens. She's looking right into my eyes now. I wonder if she can see the depths of my soul and all the ghastly sins I've committed. Can she hear the voices tormenting me?
“You shouldn't be here dancing with a stranger.” She says, holding my hands as we move side to side. “What about your wife?”
“Jayda’s a party animal. She'll be fine without me.” I take a step back and turn the Doctor around. She twirls chaotically, landing on her left foot. “By the way, you saved my life, so I’ll dance with you even though you're the worst dancer I’ve met.”
Someone screams from the party, followed by loud chatter and shouts.
“Where's the Doctor?” A breathless man's voice gurgles out as his loud, unsteady footsteps approach the door.
The door swings open and, resting on it bent over, is the Doctor’s giant bodyguard.
His body is beaten and battered. Sharp cuts stretch across his jaw and his eyes are blood-red.
“Geron!” Dr. Winter gasps with horror-filled eyes.
She runs to him, but before she gets to him, he collapses to the ground.
The whole crowd gasps and Dr. Winter cries out. She kneels by his side and lifts his head onto her lap to prevent him from choking.
“What happened?” The Doctor sobs.
Struggling to keep his eyes open, the giant man muffles, “Kael… save Kael.”
