DR. WINTER'S POV (One Week Later) The morning sun is unusually harsh today, but it's nothing compared to the heat burning inside me. “Morning Alpha!” Guards and maidens greet Xavier as he leads me into the packhouse. My skin is sizzling from the hot weather, and I wonder if everyone else is feeling the same or if my condition is due to the fact I hadn't stepped foot out of Kael’s ward in seven days. His state hasn't improved, and I’ve been paralyzed with dread. What if he never wakes up? My bones shiver as the thought runs through my mind. Finally, Xavier stops at a closed door in the upper rooms of the packhouse. “She’s inside.” Xavier utters, looking back at me. “Is this her bedroom?” I ask. He nods. I look around and notice this isn't a private chamber like the one I used to have when I was his wife. I chuckle anxiously. “I heard the WestMoon packhouse was big enough to contain two private chambers, one for the Alpha and the other for his Luna.” Xavier nods. “True, we have two chambers. One for me but the other one is closed off and has not been in use for years.” I’m trying to make sense of why Xavier will close off the other chambers and not offer it to Jayda. Is this a sign? I catch his gaze and it is blank and void of emotion. Typical Xavier. “Why?” I dare to ask. He clears his throat and turns to open the door. “Your patient is waiting, Dr Winter.” My legs grow heavier as I force myself to step into Jayda’s bedroom. It is beautiful and a little bit too flashy for my taste. But it speaks Jayda, and from all the decor and fancy things, I’m sure Xavier spends a lot to soothe his wife. “Dr Winter meet my luna, Jayda.” He introduces. “And my love, meet Dr Winter. She’ll be your personal physician for the next moon season.” Jayda is seated on a pink, furry, plush chair, dressed in off-white lingerie that blends perfectly with her oiled body. A fashion magazine covers her face, and she lowers it down slowly to look at us. “Morning darling.” She smiles at Xavier, and then her gaze softens even more when she looks at me. “The Doctor and I have met.” Xavier exhales noisily and walks to meet his wife. “So I've heard.” I stay by the door, my legs rooted to the floor as I watch Xavier kiss Jayda on her shiny forehead. She giggles and smiles as she plants multiple kisses on his face. I wish I could close my eyes, but I can't even if I wanted to. Coming to WestMoon makes me realize that six years wasn't enough to get over a heartbreak that tore me apart. It is like all the stitches I’ve done to fix my life just get ripped open the moment I see Xavier’s face at the party. And with each kiss and soft smile they share, the more my wounded heart bleeds. I don't want him back. I don't want to be his Luna, but I can't stand him being happy with my own sister. How do they get to have a happy ever after after tossing me away? “Baby, will you stay with me while the Doctor does her check up?” Jayda says with a barbie doll voice. Xavier glances at me and then back to his animated wife. “Well if you want me to then…” “No!” I say firmly, biting my bottom lip. “I’ll like for my patient and I to be alone during the check-up. I need hundred percent honesty and zero filters.” Xavier nods and then begins to walk away, but Jayda clings onto him. “Can’t he stay? It’s terribly cold in here and being with my Alpha helps my wolf warm up.” I can hear my wolf, Selsie, growl inside me. She is mostly dormant these days, only active if triggered emotionally. My long-term lack of a mate disturbs Selsie and makes her angsty around couples. Looking down at my smartwatch, I smirk. “It’s over 30 degrees in here, I’m sure you're not at any health risk without your husband.” Xavier squeezes her hand before letting go. “I’ll be outside waiting for you,” he assures her before walking out. “Thank you once again, Dr Winter.” He says at the door. As soon as the door closes, my performative smile drops and I walk to Jayda. “So what can you tell me about your all-round health for the last six months?” I ask, bringing out my report book and pen. She hums and looks at the window thoughtfully. “My s*x life is amazing.” She says, chuckling. It feels like a heavy rock is dropped in my stomach. “That's not what I asked.” Her laughter loudens. “Well you're here to help me conceive, and I believe my s*x life is most important to talk about.” I open my lips to talk, but she cuts me off. “But I think we have a problem.” She says, her face becoming sober in a flash of a second. “And what is that?” I ask, focusing on my book to write. “My husband’s constant appetite to mate.” She says, breaking into laughter again. “He never stops and…” I hold up my hand to shut her up. “Jayda…” “Luna.” She corrects me. I pause to catch my breath and steady my crashing nerves. “Jayda listen to me well,” I begin, speaking slowly so I don't lose my temper. “This is not a joke and I’m here only because of your inability to give the Alpha a child.” She scowls as I say that, but I don't care; I’m satisfied with the fact her mocking laughter is gone. “So when I ask you to tell me about your health state, I only expect to hear important details.” Reluctantly, she nods and proceeds to tell me only relevant details of her previous health conditions, which I take note of. While taking my reports, Jayda asks, “How do you cope?” I lift my head from my book. “Cope with what?” “Being alone.” She says, watching me with pitiful eyes. “It must be unbearable for your wolf to be single at this old age.” My lips purse into a thin line as I draw in a sharp breath. “I’m not old. I'm just 26.” She scoffs. “Most of us find our mate when we’re sixteen, some even younger than that.” Selsie is getting cranky within me and I’m trying to keep calm. “Companionship is primary for us wolves. We thrive in a bond and we fall apart without one.” She reaches for my hand and holds it gently. “Your life must be so sad, Doctor.” My eyes narrow and my face squeezes with tense muscles bulging on my forehead. “No, I live a busy life. I save lives and I try to make the world a safer place each and every day. The only thing that's sad is watching privileged people get better healthcare services than others.” Jayda scoffs and laughs out. “Good for you, Robinhood.” She teases, rolling her eyes. “Even a busy life can be miserable.” “I’m not—” I begin, but she cuts me off again. “I can help you.” She says, beaming with a bright smile. “Because I hate women being lonely and dejected, I will influence my husband to throw a mating party just for you to find a mate.” She touches my hair and then grimaces. “With a little touch of makeup and some beauty products, I’m sure you'll find a man who desires you.” Now that is the height of it. I push her hand away from me. “Thank you Luna but let's not forget who's helping who. I don't need your sympathy or your support.” “What about Kael?” She chimes in. The mention of my son’s name riles me up. “I wonder how he bears being fatherless.” She says, shaking her head in pity. “Poor child. Isn't it selfish of you not to have a mate to protect the innocent boy. You're just a lady, remember.” A growl escapes my lips and I watch Jayda’s eyes light up happily. She has gotten what she wanted. I shut the report book and tuck it back into my white coat. “That will be all for today. I’ll schedule our next meeting.” She keeps on talking, but I block her voice off. Tears brim in my eyes as I walk out the door. My heart is pounding and I can barely think straight. I crash into a firm body as soon as I step out of the door. “Dr Winter?” Xavier says. His eyes meet mine for a second before I look away. “Are you alright?” I take off, rushing down the stairs. “Dr Winter!”
