Jayda’s POV
The sunrise is ugly. The room smells like rotten flowers and the tea my servant handed me tastes like horse dung.
“Koch!” I lash out, setting the teacup back on its tray.
A short middle-aged man rushes in, hands held behind him. He flashes me a smile, exposing his two uneven front teeth. It's been over ten years of Koch serving me, and that smile never fails to bother me.
“What is this?” I ask, my facial muscles quivering as I pout my lips.
His yin-yang eyes lower to the hot cup of tea, and he looks at me again. “Tea, just as you like it.”
A low growl escapes my lips. “Ten years and you still don't know what I like.”
Koch shakes his head. “But you loved this mixture yesterday.”
“That's yesterday!” I yell, my hands losing grip on the tray and the teacup falls to the floor. “Clean this up!”
My blood is riling up inside me as I look out the floor to ceiling window. The training field is filled with handsome young betas challenging one another, shirtless and glowing with sweat. Yet all I can think of is my husband and his audacity.
He’s not training with them today, and my nervous system is crashing out. How dare him make me feel so unwanted? Especially now that ugly, pompous Southern Doctor is around.
Even if our love isn't so rosy, must he embarrass me in the presence of that self-righteous Doctor with a chip on her shoulder?
The last time I told Xavier about my longing for him and how it's driving me insane, he calmly recommended that I get a therapist.
If not for my impeccable reputation as Luna, I was tempted to add vinegar to his drink that night.
The only therapy I need is the look on Dr Winter’s face when she attends my party and sees all the list of alleged single men I’ve arranged to reject her.
Her mighty ego will crumble.
Giggling with myself, I return my gaze to my room. Koch is done cleaning up and preparing another cup of tea. He looks ridiculous as he’s barely tall enough to use the cooker. An unfortunate outcast misfit I rescued and gave purpose to serve me.
I sigh, happy with myself. And just like that, I notice a dark symbol on Koch’s right arm.
“What's that thing on your arm?” I ask, my brows shooting upwards.
Koch looks down at his arm and then smiles. “Just a symbol made of warm ash that the locals use to celebrate someone.”
I roll my eyes. “I know of the local methods but I don't remember Xavier winning anything recently to make the locals celebrate him.”
Koch chuckles and turns off the cooker. He raises his sleeve and reveals the symbol clearly. “This symbol means Southern Champ.” He explains, beaming from ear to ear. “The Locals are going crazy over the Southern Champ.”
The mention of Southern anything makes my skin crawl in disgust. “Who’s this Southern Champ?” I mutter, already uninterested in the topic.
“Kael.”
My eyes widens. “What?”
“Kael,” Koch explains. “The beautiful doctor’s child.”
I lift my finger and stutter for words before finally muttering. “First of all, there's nothing beautiful about Dr Winter. She has… uhm… nothing spectacular about her. She's plain. I’ve got brighter eyes in fact.”
Koch nods along.
“Also why are they celebrating that stubborn kid?” I ask, my chest suddenly tight. “Are they so bored or in need of something to be happy about?”
Koch smiles as he pours tea into another fancy cup. “That little boy fought off four wild bears. Four!” He exclaims and shakes his head in shock. “We thought the Doctor was a miracle physician but the real miracle is her son. That boy is magic, no wonder the Alpha wants him enrolled in the Alpha's Academy.”
Each word Koch rambles sticks to me like needles prickling at my flesh.
Kael!
“Alpha as in my husband?” I ask, my lips pinched tight together.
“Yes, the one and only.” Koch says matter-of-factly. “Some say the Alpha might make the little boy his protege since he currently lacks a heir.”
My heart goes quiet for a second and then explodes. “Stupid rumour!” I hiss, turning in my chair and looking back at the field. The handsome betas are still there, more unclad that ever but all I see is red.
That little cockroach becoming the Alpha's protege rather than my unborn son will be a living nightmare.
I’ll rather die and take the whole world with me than let that happen.
“It's just what all the locals are saying.” Koch shrugs defensively.
I growl, my nose flaring as it feels like i’m breathing in fire rather than air. “Well stop hearing nonsense, okay?”
He nods and then holds out the cup of tea. “Your tea is ready.”
I glance at him and his ridiculous tea. “Drop it and get out!”
He quietly drops the cup of tea in front of me, bows and then walks swiftly to the door.
“Wait!” I bark.
He turns around and smiles, his crooked teeth in clear view.
“Call me the General of the Axe Team.” I order, my voice fidgety.
Koch’s smile washes away. “But the Alpha decommissioned the Axe Team years ago. He said there was no need for secret army troops. Moreover the Axe Team is…”
I growl, kicking my legs out in frustration. “Shut up!”
The man goes quiet but in his eyes, you can tell he still has a lot to ramble about.
“Call… me… the… General.” I order firmly. Koch nods and as he proceeds to walk out, I say. “And make sure no one ever hears a word about this. No one.”
Koch vanishes and i’m left alone in the pink heaven of my room. My hands are trembling like I have a fever, my teeth are clanking against themselves but yet my heart is warm and excited.
This must not go wrong.
Dr Winter will regret the day she walked into WestMoon with that superstar son of hers.
The Axe Team will make sure of it tonight.
I smile and reach out for my cup of tea. It's warm but it tastes like the best thing I’ve ever drank.
The sunrise is beautiful now and so is my pepper red gala dress resting gracefully on the dresser in my room.
Tonight’s party will be one to remember.
