CHAPTER 2

EVELYN'S POV I didn't wait for an invitation. It was an intervention from God himself. I backed up in hushed movements, my eyes barely adjusting to the darkness. Whoever was at the door hesitated when the lights went off giving me the opportunity to station myself at the back of the door. I waited patiently for the shadow to enter completely then I jumped it. I swung my hands around his neck, locking it in place, my legs above the ground. The shadow grunted, prying my hand away from him like child's play. I fell on my butt with a loud thud and he pinned me to the ground in a matter of seconds. The lights came back on, blinding me momentarily. I winced at the sting it left but recovered quickly. I was a few inches apart from the blonde haired man above me. His minty breath warped my senses. His eyes were like molten magma, breaking down my reasoning, his hair fell perfectly to his face, some strands sticking lazily to his forehead. My eyes flickered to his lips that was twisted into a scowl and my mind went back to my situation. I was a damn hostage. I didn't have the luxury of checking out the man who kidnapped me for heaven's sake. I squirmed under him but he held me in place. “What is the matter with you?” He scolded. I held his gaze in defiance. “ Well I think this is the only logical reaction for being kidnapped” A dark chuckle rumbled through his chest. The sound was inviting and sent a shock wave to my spine but I could tell it wasn't because anything was funny. “Trust me. If I wanted to abduct someone, it wouldn't be you” Ouch. Well right back at you ass-wipe. Yeah. No. I didn't mean that. I would tie him up and lock him in my basement if I could. But he didn't need to know that. “It sure seems so. You locked me up in this creepy room. What else do you expect me to think?” He didn't give me a reply. He just stared at me like a freaking weirdo. Although I wasn't complaining. I cleared my throat. “Would you mind getting off me?” I asked, my voice dripping with sarcasm. He snapped out of his daze and pulled away, gripping my arm and yanking me to my feet. Silence stretched between us and I finally spoke when it was obvious he wasn't going to. “Who the hell are you?” “Caleb” he said simply, I snorted. “Could you be a little more specific Caleb?” I squinted my eyes on his tall figure. “Like what happened back at my house? Who killed my parents? Why did he did that?” I could feel the grief coming back to me and I pushed it down. Now wasn't the time. “I will answer every single question you have” he said and I sighed. Thank God he wasn't a crazed lunatic. “But first you have to come with me” I tensed. Spoke too soon. “And why in the hell would I do that?” He pursed his lips. Like he was hesitating then finally spoke. “Because I work for your uncle” I chuckled dryly. “Nice try but I don't have an uncle. If you-” “Yes” he snapped. “You do… and we are wasting time” I stilled and furrowed my brows at him, searching his face for a hint of amusement or some kind of gotcha moment. It didn't come. My heart hammered, my mind running wild. First a sicko kills my parents, then I'm kidnapped and now I have an uncle I've never heard of? My parents never spoke of extended family. Was this a lie all along? No. I shook my head. This dude must think I'm really dense. “Proof. Where's your proof? You claim I have a secret uncle, back it up” “Your name is Evelyn. Evelyn Cole. You're a Senior at Valley High. You've been on the cheer squad since sophomore year and your best friend's name is Lily” he said it like he was memorizing a damn script and I didn't know if I should feel impressed or scared. I tried to think of a logical explanation for him knowing details about my life. “Are you a spy? CIA? Something like that?” He stared at me like I had just grown another head. I continued my rambling “Or maybe-” “Look” he ran a hand through his hair and let out a sharp breath. “We don't have time for this s**t so I'll let you choose. It's either you come with me, where I can keep you safe? Or you go back to your house, where that person that killed your parents can finish the job they started.” His demeanor had changed, sending chills through my body and not the good kind. I weighed my options. I didn't really have any. It was live or die. Plain as day. But I couldn't just leave my parents that way. “We should call the cops at least” I murmured and he gave me a puzzled look. “And tell them what?” I opened my mouth to say something but I couldn't think of anything. I couldn't exactly tell them my parents died under mysterious circumstances and the man who did it was gone? I didn't have a face, a name of the perpetrator. I also ran, instead of doing the first thing any normal person would do. Call the cops. That alone was suspicious. Curse my cowardice. I had no reason to trust him. But I had even less reason to stay. I sighed, resigning to his offer. “Fine,” I said. “But I swear to God, if you try anything-” Caleb smirked. “Noted.” We exited the bare motel and got on the road. So here I was, in a car, with a strange man, going to meet someone I never knew existed. My heart was in turmoil, I didn't even have the chance to grieve, to feel. It was all moving too fast. Wherever this was going… I had a feeling I wasn’t ready for it.
