"Find out everything," I told Cade the next morning. "Where she came from. Where she's been. Who the children belong to. Everything from the night she disappeared up until now."
Cade nodded, already moving.
"And Cade."
He stopped.
"Be discreet. I don't want her spooked."
He left without another word.
I sat back and looked at the ceiling.
The children had no father. That was the part I kept returning to without meaning to. No father. Just their mother and an aunt and a man named Ryan who was like a father but wasn't.
She had been alone this entire time. In a town that was no place to raise children. In a palace that was no place to hide.
Whatever she was running from, she was still running.
