Chapter 1

Connor's POV: Tess's blue eyes stared into the fire that was between us. They shined bright-showing their beauty. I couldn't believe my eyes... My best friend was the most beautiful thing in the world. Gosh, I wished I could have her. But it was forbidden. A wolf couldn't have a human mate as his Luna. I was next in line, taking over the Blue Shaded Moon pack in just a few days. I was turning twenty-two. Just a few days after Tess's birthday. I watched her as her boyfriend walked over to her and offered her a plate of food. She looked up at him and took it gratefully. I heightened my hearing so I could hear what they were talking about. "Have you seen Raya at all," William whispered. Tess shook her head. "Not lately. No." "Where do you think she disappeared to? She's usually around at this time!" Tess shrugged as I listened intently. "That woman has her mood swings," she mumbled. "I'm sure she'll be around sometime tonight. When we're all asleep." William nodded. "Please, let me know. She's got me worried sick." "Do you think he knows?" Tess lowered her voice. What was she talking about? It was William's turn to shrug. "If he does, he hasn't led on." "Yeah, but-." "Dude, you gotta try this," Kade said right next to me, making my ears hurt. I covered my ear next to my brother and hissed, looking down. Kade leaned in towards me. "You need to stop eavesdropping on their conversations," he mumbled. "It's getting old." I looked at him. "But what if they let something slip?" I grumbled with a glare, my eyes in slits. "What if they knew Raya was one of us?" "And a rogue?" I nodded slowly. Kade sighed and slumped. "Well, it's not like we're the Men in Black. We can't make them forget." "King Callahan could." Adrian, my future beta, sits on my other side. "If they know, he'll kill William and make Tess his mate," he grumbled. "So, don't even bring it up." I looked at my best friend. "She's. My. Fated. Mate." I whispered very quietly. I motioned at Tess very slightly with my head. I couldn't let the Lycan king know my secret if he was close by. I would be in trouble. Adrian growled and everyone at the barbecue stopped talking. I smacked him on the back of his head. That was when the hair on my neck stood on end. I looked around Kade, who had just about the whole entire entourage of shishkabobs. Not too far in the woods was a pair of golden eyes watching us. We did our best not to make it obvious, but Kade, Adrian, and I took deep breaths to take in the scent. King Callahan was here. But so was someone else. Raya... I instantly got up as I saw her shadow in the trees. Ready to kill, I watched as she walked over to the Lycan king. But he disappeared before she could reach him. I heard a few breaths release, but I knew it wasn't over yet. Raya panted in the cool night air, her tongue lolling. Oh, how I wanted to flick it and tell her that she made the wrong choice. Almost killing her mate who rejected her! Instantly, I disappeared into the woods, shifted, and chased after her. A few seconds later, Adrian and Kade were by my side as we chased her deeper into the woods, following her scent. She was in sight, right in front of us. But she took a turn into vampire territory and we lost her. s**t! "Better luck next time," Alpha Berkhardt said next to me as I stared into the darkness. His hand landed on my wolf's shoulder. "We chased her, too. Her scent was all over Lincoln's body. I snapped a shock look at him, realizing he was just in jeans. "She killed him," he whispered. "She finally did it." No! Lincoln was a good friend! Deserved the best in life! Tank growled as I snarled. We both liked the guy. And we were about to avenge his death...
