A LINE CROSSED

1000 Words
Amara knew something was wrong. She felt it the moment that woman walked in. The way her eyes lingered. The way her smile didn’t mean anything. The way Luca’s presence… shifted. Now the mansion felt different. Less quiet. More… watched. Amara sat on the edge of her bed, her fingers gripping the sheets tightly. Her mind wouldn’t rest. “Girls like her tend to become… problems.” A soft sound outside her door made her head snap up. Footsteps. Slow. Deliberate. Her heart began to race. “Hello?” she called out hesitantly. No answer. The door opened. And it wasn’t Luca. It was her. The same woman. Calm. Collected. Dangerous. Amara stood immediately. “You shouldn’t be here.” The woman smiled slightly. “I could say the same to you.” Silence. Thick. Heavy. “What do you want?” Amara asked, trying to keep her voice steady. The woman stepped inside, closing the door behind her. Click. “I want to understand something,” she said, walking slowly around the room. “What exactly makes you so… special?” “I’m not—” “Oh, but you are,” she cut in smoothly. “Luca doesn’t keep people.” Amara’s chest tightened. “I didn’t ask him to.” The woman stopped walking. Then turned. “But you didn’t leave either.” “I tried.” A pause. Then— A soft laugh. “That’s almost cute.” Before Amara could react— The woman moved. Fast. Her hand shot out, grabbing Amara’s arm harshly. Amara gasped. “Let go—!” “You think this is a game?” the woman snapped, her voice dropping. “Do you have any idea what kind of world you’ve stepped into?” Pain shot through Amara’s arm as her grip tightened. “I didn’t choose this—!” “No,” the woman said coldly, leaning closer. “But now you’re in it. And people like you don’t survive here.” Fear surged. Real. Sharp. Amara struggled. “Let me go!” But the woman didn’t. Instead— Her other hand lifted— And struck. The slap echoed loudly through the room. Amara stumbled back, her vision spinning as pain flared across her face. “Pathetic,” the woman muttered. Amara’s breath came out unevenly, her heart pounding wildly as she tried to steady herself. “Stay away from him,” the woman warned, her voice low and threatening. “Or next time… I won’t stop at that.” The door burst open. Both of them froze. Luca stood there. And this time— There was no control. His eyes were dark. Raging. Deadly. “What,” he said slowly, “is going on?” The woman straightened slightly, but her confidence didn’t falter. “She’s becoming a liability,” she said. “I was simply—” “Don’t.” The word cut through the room like a blade. Silence dropped instantly. Luca stepped forward. Slow. Measured. Terrifying. His gaze shifted briefly to Amara— To her face. Red. Shaken. Something snapped. Before anyone could react— His gun was in his hand. The shot rang out. The woman’s eyes widened— Then she collapsed. Gone. Just like that. Amara’s breath hitched violently. Her body trembled as she stared at the floor— At the blood— At what he had just done. “Why…” she whispered, her voice breaking. “Why would you—” Luca turned to her immediately. And just like before— The rage disappeared. Not completely. But enough. He closed the distance between them in seconds. His hands came up— One gripping her jaw gently but firmly. Tilting her face toward the light. “Did she hurt you anywhere else?” he asked. Amara’s breath shook. “You just killed her—!” “I asked you a question.” His voice was tight. Controlled—but barely. Tears filled her eyes. “No…” His gaze lingered on her face. On the mark. On the fear. His jaw clenched. “She shouldn’t have touched you.” The words came out low. Possessive. Dangerous. Amara’s chest tightened. “Stop saying that like I belong to you—” “I don’t know what you are.” The confession hit harder than anything else. Silence. His hand was still on her face. Warm. Steady. “I don’t understand it,” he continued, quieter now. “I don’t understand why you’re still here. Why I didn’t let you go. Why I can’t—” He stopped. Amara’s breath caught. “Why you can’t what?” she whispered. His eyes dropped briefly to her lips. That was her mistake. She noticed. And suddenly— Everything shifted. Her heart started racing. Faster. Louder. “Why I can’t stay away from you,” he finished. The air between them grew heavy. Charged. Amara should have stepped back. Should have pushed him away. Should have said something— But she didn’t. And neither did he. It happened in a second. His hand tightened slightly against her jaw— And then— He kissed her. Not soft. Not gentle. But not cruel either. It was controlled. Deep. Like he was testing something he didn’t understand. Amara froze at first. Her mind going blank. Her heart slamming wildly against her chest. This was wrong. So wrong. But when she tried to pull back— His hand moved to her waist. Holding her there. Not forcing. But not letting go either. And for a moment— Just one moment— She didn’t fight. Then reality hit. Amara pulled away sharply, her breath uneven. “What are you doing?” she whispered. Luca stared at her. Silent. Like he was just as affected. “I shouldn’t have done that,” he said. But he didn’t sound like he regretted it. Because that kiss… Changed everything. And deep down— They both knew… There was no going back.
