"Which one of you is the guy? Look up and identify him," the policewoman commanded, her voice like a sudden frost in the room. Before I could even open my mouth to confirm my identity, the five men—those same savage thugs who had nearly ended me in that alley—did something that made my jaw drop. As if on a synchronized cue, they spun around and hit the floor. One by one, they fell to their knees with a series of heavy thuds, their foreheads practically touching the linoleum. Then, the sobbing began. Actual, snot-dripping tears. "Boss! We swear on our lives, we had no idea you were connected to him!" the leader wailed, his voice cracking with genuine terror. "If we had known who you were, we wouldn't have dared to look in your direction, let alone lay a finger on you. Please, have mercy!
