Chapter 4 Do You Have Proof?

659 Words
Back then, Owen had said, "Stella, we finally have a home. When we have kids someday, we'll move into a bigger place." Now the child was here. But that “someday” he promised would never come. The door clicked open. Arna walked in, her arm wrapped around Owen's, both of them laughing. The moment they saw me, their smiles froze. "You're back?" I held onto my suitcase. "It's my house. Why wouldn't I be?" Owen's face immediately darkened. "You come back without even saying anything first, and now you're giving me attitude?" His gaze dropped to my suitcase. "Where's the baby? You planning to just stay at your mom's place?" "You saw the divorce papers, didn't you? You cheated first. The child and the house both go to me." Owen didn't react. But Arna's expression suddenly changed. "Ma'am, how can you say something like that Professor and I are completely innocent! But you… a few days ago, I saw you…" She suddenly covered her mouth. "I didn't mean to say it out loud, it's just…" The way she trailed off made Owen's face turn cold. "What did you see?" "I saw her at a bar, playing some kind of kissing game with a few guys. Maybe I was mistaken." Arna pulled out her phone and handed him a photo. After looking at it, Owen's gaze turned sharp as a blade when it landed on me. "So this is why you're insisting on divorcing me? You're the one who changed, Stella." I looked up at him in disbelief. "You actually believe her? I just gave birth. I've been recovering this entire month. How would I even go to a bar?" Owen froze. Arna sniffled softly. "Professor, maybe I really got it wrong. Please don't fight with her because of me." A notification sound went off on her phone. Arna glanced at the screen, then suddenly shrieked and threw herself into Owen's arms. "S-someone found my contact info. They're calling me a slut… a homewrecker…" Tears streamed down her face as she looked at me. "Ma'am, you know there's nothing between me and Professor Owen. How could you do something like this to me?" Owen looked at me with disgust. "Was this you?" It sounded like a question. But his tone had already convicted me. I shook my head, exhausted. "No." "If it wasn't you, then who else would do something like this? Stella, going after a girl five years younger than you… does that make you feel good?" He shoved his phone in front of me, disappointment written all over his face. "Why are you so sure it was me?" "You showed up today just to see Arna suffer, didn't you? Stella, when did you become this vicious? Apologize to Arna. Now." I bit down on my lip, refusing to bow my head. "Where's your proof? Do you have any proof I did it?" He faltered for a second. Then, with Arna crying beside him, he grabbed my wrist and forced me down. The moment my knees hit the ground, a sharp, tearing pain shot through my lower abdomen. My vision went black for a second, but I clenched my teeth and didn't make a sound. Owen's grip tightened around my wrist, like he wanted to crush my bones. He looked down at me from above, his eyes cold and unfamiliar, like I was some unforgivable criminal. "Apologize to Arna." Owen said it again, his tone leaving no room for argument. Arna stayed in his arms, a smug smile tugging at her lips. I laughed. I laughed so hard tears streamed down my face. Then I shoved him away and threw the documents from my bag about Arna's chaotic private life and how she lured men into relationships right in front of him. "Owen, open your damn eyes and take a good look. That ‘poor, innocent student' you're so desperate to protect… what the hell is she really?"
