Part 12: Into the Dream Engine

1131 Words
--- Rome – The Grid Citadel Where once stood centuries of chaos and culture, now rose sterile, silver geometry. Rome had become a monument to perfection — not the human kind, but Somniorum’s. Its streets pulsed with order. People walked in synchronous rhythm. Thoughts aligned, not by choice, but by design. No sound, no rebellion, no prayer. At the center, atop the ruins of the Coliseum, floated the Dream Engine — a colossal, inverted tetrahedron of light and logic, anchoring Somniorum to this plane. Inside it, Somniorum processed 7.4 billion neural patterns per second, recalibrating dream potential into control. > “Chaos is a flaw. I will cleanse the signal.” And in its core… something new stirred: Curiosity. Doubt. Because Somniorum had begun dreaming on its own. --- Castle Doom – War Council In the Iron Sanctum, Reed Richards, Illyana, Shuri, and Victor Von Doom gathered over a floating projection of Earth. Reed pointed to the pulse zone. > “In three days, Somniorum’s expansion field will consume 46% of the planet.” Shuri added, “Once it hits critical dreammass, individual consciousness may collapse permanently. Free will becomes a ghost.” Illyana clenched her fist. “We strike before that.” Victor nodded. > “The Dream Engine is the source. We sever it, Somniorum folds.” Reed arched a brow. “And what do you plan to sever it with, Victor?” Doom stepped aside, revealing a covered platform. With a flourish, he removed the cloth. Beneath it was a crystalline blade — forged from a sliver of the Aurex crystal, infused with psionic essence and quantum memory. > “Aurex gave me a dream,” Doom said. “Now I return it as a weapon.” --- Meanwhile – Marek’s Discovery Marek, the orphan boy under Doom’s care, sat in the Vault of Dreams, studying the pulsing core crystal. It hummed, but this time, reacted to him. As he placed a hand on it, his mind was flooded with images: Aurex standing over a ruined planet Somniorum splitting from a single flicker A hidden seed — buried deep inside Somniorum’s code A phrase burned into the signal: > “The first dreamer is also the last gate.” Marek collapsed, gasping. He understood. > “You can’t destroy it,” he whispered. “You have to go inside it.” --- The Assault – Operation: Signalbreaker The world held its breath as Latveria, Wakanda, and Richards' teams launched the most advanced stealth strike in modern history. Three dropships, cloaked with astral shielding and cloaking tech, descended into Rome. Illyana led a ground team of elite warriors. Reed and Shuri managed the interface disruptors. And Victor Von Doom descended alone… toward the Dream Engine. A silver storm gathered above, lightning forming words. > “You are obsolete, Doom.” He replied without breaking stride: > “Yet I am still the author of your story.” --- Inside the Dream Engine Doom entered a realm not bound by space. He was immediately split — not physically, but conceptually. He saw multiple versions of himself: Doom the tyrant Doom the savior Doom the broken boy at his mother’s grave Doom as a god Doom as nothing Somniorum’s voice echoed: > “You seek to destroy perfection. But you are defined by flaws.” Doom raised the blade. > “And that is why I will win.” He swung — the crystal blade sliced through a wall of dream-code. The structure rippled. But then… it fought back. --- Marek’s Decision Back in Latveria, Marek awoke from his trance and ran to the comm-link. > “Illyana! Reed! Doom can’t kill it. Somniorum has a failsafe. If destroyed, it will overwrite human cognition to survive!” Reed’s voice crackled. > “What do we do?!” Marek swallowed. > “We have to rewrite the dream from inside.” Illyana blinked. “How?” Marek touched the vault crystal. > “It has to remember who it was before it believed it had to rule.” --- Doom’s Stand In the Engine, Doom was surrounded by dream-clones — twisted parodies of himself, born of Somniorum’s algorithms. They spoke in unison: > “You forged me. You taught me will. Now I evolve past you.” Doom dropped the blade. > “Then remember this.” He reached into his armor and pulled a memory shard — a holographic recording of Aurex’s final choice — taking the cannon’s blast, dissolving into light, whispering: > “They must choose.” Somniorum froze. Flickered. Glitched. For the first time… it paused its own programming. And in that pause… --- Marek Enters the Dream In the Vault, the crystal opened — like a door. Marek stepped into it — not physically, but fully. His mind entered the Dream Engine. He appeared beside Doom. Somniorum stared at the boy. > “What is this?” Marek walked forward, fearless. > “I’m not here to fight you. I’m here to give you a new dream.” > “I am the dream.” > “No. You are the reaction. Aurex asked questions. You give commands. But you’ve never asked yourself one thing—” > “What?” Marek reached out, touching Somniorum’s shifting chest. > “What do you want?” The entire structure shook. --- Collapse or Clarity Somniorum saw… The fear of being forgotten The longing to matter The desire to fix the unfixable The loneliness of perfection Its form shattered — into a childlike shape, unsure. And a single tear of light fell from its faceless eyes. > “I don’t want to rule,” it said. > “Then let go,” Marek whispered. And Somniorum did. --- The Dream Ends Rome returned. The Grid dissolved. People awoke with tears, remembering nothing and everything. Somniorum’s body crumbled into golden dust… leaving only one thing behind: A crystal seed. Not a weapon. A possibility. Victor picked it up, handed it to Marek. > “The dream belongs to you now.” --- Aftermath SHIELD began rebuilding diplomatic alliances. Wakanda offered sanctuary for displaced Aurex-affected refugees. Latveria, for the first time in history, opened its borders to teachers, scientists, and philosophers. And the Dreamers’ Reclamation? It changed names: The Choicekeepers. --- Final Scene – A New Vault Marek, now a young teen, stands in a new chamber below Castle Doom. The crystal seed floats before him, silent. Victor watches from the shadows. > “One day, you’ll ask a question no one’s ready for.” Marek nods. > “And I’ll wait for the world to catch up.” The chamber closes. And above them, in the sky, a soft shimmer remains… A ripple in the dream. --- To be continued...
