Chapter 14

Ava:

We were having lunch at this cute coffee shop, chatting about the town and the pack when Marie gets a text. From the look on her face, it wasn’t good. Her eyes glazed over for a second before she looked back at us.

“Sh1t! We need to go back to the packhouse now!” Marie exclaims

“What’s going on?” Laura asks, clearly worried

Marie gives me a side glance, then stands up from the table before answering.

“The person in charge of an ambush against us not long ago is in town. Alex is beating him up pretty bad. I sent warriors to pick him up and bring him to the dungeons. I need to get you two to safety. Let’s go.”

We rushed back to the car. As soon as we drove off, Marie was on the phone.

“Do you have him in custody? Do we have any injured?” she asked

A man I don't know answered.

“No injuries Luna, and yes, the perp is in custody. You should be made aware that he’s Alex’s mate’s baby daddy.”

“What!?! Kenzi’s ex sent hunters to attack us???” she yells out

“Seems that way. I have to go Luna. We are heading to the dungeons.”

“Ok, I’ll have Kyle meet you there.”

With that Marie hung up the phone and dials Kyle's number.

“Kyle, I need you to stay with Jackson and keep him levelheaded. The warriors are coming with a prisoner. Alex will probably be following. You need to make sure the guys don’t kill the prisoner.”

“Why would they?” He answers back, confused at the situation.

“He might be responsible for the hunters. You need to question him but keep him alive...for now. Keep an eye on Jackson.”

“Ava...is she ok?” He sounded so worried.

“I’m fine babe. Marie is driving us home as we speak” I say loud enough for him to hear me over the Bluetooth connection.

“Good. When you get here, go to our apartment and stay there till I come see you. I need to know you’re safe”

“I’ll keep her company” Laura shouts from the backseat.

“Don't worry about me. Be safe.” I tell him.

“I haven't told Jackson yet. You need to let him know what is happening and get ready for the prisoner’s arrival. Remember Kyle, keep an eye on Jackson and don’t let the prisoner die.”

“Will do Luna. Please keep my mate safe. See you in a bit.” He answers before hanging up.

I could feel the tension in the car. I wasn’t quite sure what was going on or why everyone was so tense. Why is it that Kenzie’s ex being in town was such a big deal? I can understand Alex getting into a fight with him over his mate. Male wolves tend to be territorial. But taking him as a prisoner seems a bit much. And I’m sure I heard Marie say something about hunters. Did Kenzie date a hunter? Seems crazy to go from dating a hunter to being mated to a wolf. The tension in the air was suffocating so I decide I might as well ask what the hell is going on since it seems like I’m the only one out of the loop right now.

“Will one of you explain what is going on? Why is Kyle worried about my safety and what’s the big deal with Kenzi’s ex?”

“As you know, my mate Jackson, as well as 3 other pack members, got captured and brought to the hunters' lab, where we found you. We were ambushed on our way to a neighbouring pack. Well, just now, Kenzi’s ex apparently just told her he hired the hunters to kill Alex. I’m guessing he isn’t too happy that Kenzi moved on and is planning on raising his kid in our pack, though I don’t know how he even found that out. He's supposed to be a normal human. Kenzi didn't even know the existence of werewolves before arriving here. Anyway, he seems to be a threat to our pack at the moment, especially if he is working with hunters. Given what happened to you, it is only normal for your mate to worry.”

“Oh” was all I could muster. Hunters hanging around here was definitely not good news.

“Don’t worry, you will be safe at the packhouse.” Marie tries to reassure me, probably having sense my nerves.

“Ok” I answer before looking out of the window, trying to keep my mind from wondering to my time in captivity. The rest of the ride was silent. Uneasiness settled in my bones at the thought of hunters roaming nearby.

Kyle:



I was having lunch at my desk, trying to get as much work done before my girl got home when Marie’s call came in. As soon as I was off the phone with her, I linked a few warriors to have an idea of what was going on.

K : What happened?

W: It’s Kenzi’s ex, Beta. He got into an altercation with Alex and confessed to sending hunters after him to kill him. Alex did a number on him though. The idi0t had no chance against him. We split them up before Alex killed him. The guy is in bad shape but he’ll live. Heading to the dungeons now. Be there in 10.

K: Ok. I’ll meet you there. Keep your eyes peeled in case he has backup

W: Will do Beta

After that, I rushed to Jackson’s office.

“Alpha, we need to get ready for an incoming prisoner.”

“What prisoner? I haven’t been made aware of any rogue sighting lately.” He answers, surprised.

“Not a rogue, a human. But before I tell you who, you need to promise to keep your cool.”

“Who is it Kyle!?!” he bellowed, not happy I wasn't answering his question right away.

“Possibly the one behind the ambush and the hunters.”

“WHAT!!!” Jackson yelled before rushing out of his office and heading outside.

“Jackson, wait! Calm down man. We need to interrogate him. Don’t do anything rash. It’s Kenzi’s ex!” I rush out as I run after him

“Where is he!?!” He roared, his wolf close to the surface. Jackson was loosing his usual cool.

“On his way Alpha. Warriors have him in custody. ETA 10 minutes. Marie is on her way home too.”

“He better not have touched her or his death will be long and painful” he threatens

“Marie hasn’t seen him yet Alpha. She is safe. From what I have heard, Alex is the one who caught him. I don’t have many details.”

“Fine, but I'm still waiting here until I make sure she is home safe.”

“Of course, Alpha.” I replied

I could feel the energy radiating off Jackson, his Alpha aura uncontrolled at the moment as he paced back and forth in front of the packhouse. This isn’t going to be pretty.

As soon as Marie arrived, she rushed to Jackson. I take a hold of Ava, giving her a hug and kissing her forehead before letting her go inside with Laura. At least I don't have to worry about her while I deal with this mess.

Get to the dungeons. I’ll calm Jackson down. We will be down shortly Marie links. I nod in her direction and head off.

It wasn’t long before 2 SUVs pulled up in front of the dungeons. The warriors get out, and to my surprise, Alex isn’t one of them. However, when I see the warriors drag the S.O.B out of the car, I can tell Alex did quite a number on him already. The guy had a split lip and both eyes swollen shut. From the state of his clothes, I was ready to bet that there were multiple bruises under them and probably a few broken ribs. He seemed unconscious at the moment.

“Chain him up to the wall. I want round the clock supervision. Jason and Jake, you have first shift. No one is to touch him. We need him alive for interrogation.”

“Yes Beta.” They answered in unison before dragging the perp inside.

After ensuring that the warriors had effectively secured the prisoner, I hung around waiting for Jackson and Marie to show up.

“He is secured Alpha. Interrogation will have to wait though. He’s still unconscious.” I say to Jackson as he approaches. He was alone but this time he was a lot calmer.

“Good” was all he answered.

“Are you going to be ok? How do you want to handle this? He seems human.”

“I’ll call the council. I don’t want us to get any backlash for this but after what he did, I can’t let him off easy either. I’m too close to this. He had people attack us, including my mate. He had members of our pack tortured, including me. I can’t be the one to decide on his faith.”

“Very wise Jackson. I’m not sure I would be as stoic if I were in your shoes right now.” I was very impressed with how he was keeping his cool.

“Marie pointed out I had to be an Alpha right now, not the victim. I have to do right by my people.” He says with a sigh

“She makes a fair point, yet it can’t be easy for you. I’m surprised Alex didn’t show up yet.”

“Warriors told us he stayed behind to take care of his mate.”

“Yeah, heard this guy was Kenzi’s ex. That has to be tough on her”

“I’m going to head back to the office and make some calls. You should probably go see your mate, make sure she’s ok after all this talk of hunters. I assume you already have men ready to guard around the clock.”

“Yes Alpha.”

“Good. I’ll see you later then.” He answered before turning around and exiting the building.
