A gift

Doctor Allen had paused for a while and then began to speak 

" I see you are already a celebrity to the locals. You don't need this job. You can always build up your own hospital from a scratch." Said Doctor Allen and continued his review.

" Please sir . I need the job badly." Said Ramlah as she subconsciously burst into tears.

" So how much was paid to you for the rendering the service to your partients." Asked Doctor Allen without looking at Ramlah.

" They had no money with them . They will pay me in two days time sir. " Said Ramlah in an Emotion tone that emanated from self pity.

" Is that so . How do one cope by rendering services without money. How do fare with such people as your customers."

" I manage to save a little from the customers who pay up their bills. Many of the locals are just like my parents. They are Sickly and poor. I won't like anyone to turn my parents down because they have money. I can't also turn down any patient because they have no money. " She said amidst her sadness as she concluded that she had missed the job.

" Hmm. That's quite touching. Well I'm sorry you took your opportunity for granted. The job offer had been taken by someone else." Said Doctor Allen and waved his head sadly.

The sobs of Ramlah grew louder and the fury in Zaynaba eyes had turned to sympathy she reached for her friends hand and wiped the tears off her cheeks.

" Please Ramlah be strong. There would always be a vacancy some other time. " Said Zaynaba who also held back her own tears.

" I wish I could help . But I'm sorry its no Longer in my power. I will be glad if you two excused me . I have a lot of work on my hands." Said Doctor Allen in a voice that lacked any form of compassion. Zaynaba was quite surprised at the inconsiderate manner which Doctor Allen had treated Ramlah. She had always known him to be a good man who was rich in empathy.

" Thank you sir.do have a nice day . " Said Zaynaba in a tone that didn't hide her disappointment at the Doctor.

Ramlah covered her teary face with the blood stained file as she headed for the door along with her Zaynaba. She didn't want anyone to else outside the office to see her crying. The two girls were already almost out of the office when Doctor Allen had spoken.

" One last question." He said pointing at Ramlah. Who had turned to hear what else humiliating words he had to offer her .

" The two farmers you had treated had caused you the job. You would have been paid quite well and would have been able to take care of your parents. Do you regret tending to them at your own detriment. " Said Doctor Allen as he gazed at Ramlah to decode the answer in her body language. She was quiet for some while before she finally spoke."

" Yes sir at this point I regret helping them at my own expense , but tomorrow if given another chance and the same scenario occurs again. I have no doubt that I will save their lives before coming down here to try my luck again. " Said Ramlah in a steady tone that had some militating tendencies in it. She felt there was no need humiliating her after refusing to give her the job.

" Perfect! I think that is the most honest answer a rational human can give. Okay Miss Ramlah. Your interview is over . You can resume work first thing tomorrow morning.Drop your credentials with my secretary in the next office. " Said Doctor Allen

Both Ramlah and Zaynaba were mute for some seconds. Their brains were having difficulty to decode what their ears had just heard. They looked blankly at each other before Ramlah found the words to speak.

" You you .. said what sir?." She sturttered as her senses were at alert to digest his response.

" I said your interview is over . You have the job. Give your credentials to my secretary and resume work tomorrow morning." Said Doctor Allen and this time he had smiled for the first time since the girls had entered his office.

" Oh Goodness. You are a such a kind man." Said Ramlah as she fell on her knees amidst her teary euphoria. It was a dream come through for her . Zaynaba had already began to Sing and dance in Jubilation of her friends success.

" God bless you Doctor Allen I promise to work very hard. I shall not let you down sir. " She said and joined her friend in her jubilant frenzy.

" You have proven to be a honest person with empathy to human suffering. This facility needs people like you. Once again congratulations Miss Ramlah. Go home and have a rest. Your big day starts tommorow. " Said Doctor Allen as he smiled richly at the jubilant teenage girls who couldn't contain their emotions.

[A day later]

The jubilations that erupted in the premise of the facility was unlike any worker had seen before. The news that Sheikh Shagori had not only dropped the Lawsuit against them but had also pledged to double thieir salary for the coming month had made the workers very happy and they couldn't help but sing and dance among themselves. Doctor Allen had called for a brief night picnic on the large garden of the facility. He wanted almost all the staffs to be present so it had to be brief as possible so the nurses and doctors could rush back to their duties of saving and preserving lives. Doctor Allen had called the brief picnic in favor of Siin, who hadn't spent up to two days as a staff of the facility , but had already been bringing good fortune to the team. He knew quite well that Siin was already a sensation amongst the workers in the facility and he felt a formal unveiling of the young star would please both Siin and the many admirers he had gathered in such a short span of time.

Soon almost everystaff of the facility had gathered at the garden which had been used to host many of the facilities occasions , like anniversaries and award giving. The garden had a stage which was built so that speakers or entertainers could mount it and provide visibility to all that wished to see them. Mr Allen, who had a glass of Non alcoholic wine in his hand quickly hurried to the top of the stage , where everystaff present could see him. He had bearly waited for their thunderous ovation to end when he began to speak in an excited manner.

" Happy evening beautiful people. I trust you all are the doing very well on a glorious evening like this " said Mr Allen and paused for a while to wave back the scores of staffs who had been replying his question in clandestined unison.

" Thank you very much . I won't keep us here past a minute or two. The major reason we are here is to celebrate the good outcome of what would have been a disaster to us and the ministry of health in General. God being kind, we were able to unravel ourselves out the law suit which Sheikh Shagori hard planned to deal against us.

However it's no longer news to us that, our facility was only able to achieve such miraculous feat thanks to the unplanned intervention of a newly appointed Surgeon of the facility In the person of Doctor Siin Sebanyi. Please MR Siin come up here a little. I want the whole staffs to acknowledge the face of their benefactor. " Said Doctor Allen as he ushered Siin to climb on to the podium. The applauds and words of praises increased as Siin walked rather quickly to the podium and waved back at the staffs with a hearty smile of humble Majesty.
