It was morning.
June had gathered enough courage to face her fears and accept the reality.
She couldn't afford to miss lectures again.
She woke up feeling strong and confident.
Her lecture was scheduled for 10:00 a.m., but she arrived at school by 7:00 a.m.
She sat under a tree in the school compound, enjoying the fresh air and reading her book while she waited for her course mates to arrive and for the time of the lecture.
Suddenly, her book was forcefully taken away from her and thrown to the ground.
It was the boys from the Law department.
“What's the meaning of this?” June asked.
June wasn't loved by all her course mates. Most of them envied her because of her intelligence and smartness.
Some hated her because of her beauty, especially the girls.
Others saw her as an obstacle because she always won every quiz and took home the prizes.
Answering questions in class was her favorite thing to do.
The three boys had tried to ask her out when they were at level 100, but she didn't give them any attention.
They thought it was the right time to get their revenge.
“What have I done to deserve this? I hope you know what bullying is all about and the implications of bullying in this school,” June said, trying to warn them.
One of the boys poured a full can of water all over her body.
“You see, she can't do anything other than talk,” one of the boys said.
The boys made fun of her and laughed.
It was 7:30 a.m., and the whole school was quiet. The three boys had taken her to the back of their departmental building.
No one could hear her, even if she screamed at that time of the morning.
June was furious.
She couldn't fight three boys.
“I know I can't fight you guys back, but I promise you guys will pay for this.”
She had barely finished speaking when one of the boys gave her a hot slap.
June cried bitterly.
“What have I done to deserve this? You don't have the right to bully me in this school. You guys are wicked!” June cried.
One of the boys found her words insulting.
He raised his hand to give her another slap.
Suddenly, a hand from behind held him back and punched him in the face.
“Stop!” he shouted.
It was Scott.
“Anyone who dares to step an inch closer will visit his grave,” Scott said angrily.
Scott was the well-known son of a rich and influential family. Nobody could easily challenge his power and influence.
The three boys ran away.
“Are you okay?” Scott asked, touching her cheek.
He was acting like he really cared.
June looked at him and thought, He's only acting like he really cares.
She immediately slapped Scott's hand away from her face.
“Are you okay? Let me take you to a clinic,” Scott asked again.
“Why did you save me?” June asked.
“It's my job to protect my tutor,” Scott answered.
“Your body is wet. You must be feeling cold. Make use of my jacket,” Scott said.
“Use your jacket for what? I never asked you to save me.
I'm not your tutor.
Stay away from me,” June said.
She threw his jacket on the floor and left angrily.
Scott stood up and picked up his jacket.
“Why did I even save her?” he said and left, though he felt pity for her.
June was already in a mess. She couldn't wait for the lectures anymore, so she decided to go home.
She had just arrived home when she saw her mother seated in the garden in front of the house.
June walked past her as though she didn't see her, with an angry expression on her face.
Her mother noticed her mood, but she was busy with her laptop because she was working from home.
June opened the door and shut it with force.
She sat on her bed, questioning herself.
Wasn't I too harsh on him? He just saved me from the hands of those wicked bullies.
I mean, I'm supposed to show him some kindness.
Why am I even pitying him?
He deserved it. Why did he even show up in my life in the first place?
He has disguised himself from me.
She sighed.
There was a knock at the door.
“June, it's me,” her mother said.
“Mom, the door is open. Come in.”
“June, my darling, we need to talk. Come downstairs. I'll be waiting in the sitting room.”
“I'll be with you shortly. Let me freshen up,” June said.
“What's with this urgent discussion? It's unlike her,” she murmured.
Mrs. Anderson was seated on a couch.
“Mom, I'm here. I hope all is well.”
“Have your seat. I want us to talk,” her mother said.
“I want you to be honest with me, my darling. Are you struggling with anything?”
“I noticed your mood these past few days is unlike yours.
I'm your mother. You can tell me anything.”
“Mom, I'm fine,” June said.
“Then what's with your attitude earlier when you came back from school? You acted like you didn't see me.
Besides, you came back much earlier than expected. I thought you had lectures until 11:00 a.m.
And your face wasn't looking good at all,” her mother said, looking worried.
“Mom, trust me. Nothing is wrong with me,” June said.
“My darling, just know that I'm your mother. You can tell me anything.”
“I know, Mom.
And I love you so much.”
June pretended like nothing had happened, while there was still something troubling her.
Suddenly, her phone rang.
It was one of her course mates, Ivanna.
“Your presence is needed in school right now.
An important attendance was taken in class today, and I didn't see you in class.
I just remembered to tell you now. The attendance is compulsory, and you need to come to school before the attendance book is submitted,” Ivanna said.
June had no close friends in school. Ivanna was the only person who always stood for the truth. She didn't support evil or listen to gossip.
“Okay, thank you so much. I'll be on my way now.”
She ended the call.
“Mom, I have to rush to school now. There's an emergency. My presence is needed,” June said and ran off immediately.
“Okay, my daughter. Please be safe,” Mrs. Anderson replied.
June got to school.
She headed straight to her departmental lecture hall, but she couldn't find anyone.
It turned out that everyone had already gone home.
“What should I do now? I don't even know which lecturer the attendance book was submitted to,” she said in confusion.
“Wait... Since it was Mrs. Bennett who had us this morning, that must be her attendance book,” she thought and headed straight to her office.
At the same time, June remembered the encounter she had with Mrs. Bennett.
She was afraid that Mrs. Bennett wouldn't give her the attendance book to write her name.
June wondered.
There was a knock at the door.
“Come in,” Mrs. Bennett said.
“Good afternoon, ma,” June greeted her.
“Afternoon, dear. What can I do for you?”
“Ma, please, I'm here for the attendance book. I was in school earlier, but I had an emergency, so . . .”
Mrs. Bennett couldn't wait for her to finish. She handed the attendance book to her.
Mrs. Bennett's kindness toward her wasn't ordinary. She acted kindly toward June so that she would not reveal her secret to anyone.
June opened the book to write her name.
She suddenly found out that her name was already written on the third line of the book.
She was surprised.
Who could have written this?
She wondered and handed the book back to Mrs. Bennett.
“Thank you so much, ma,” she said and left the office.
