Chapter 1

Arya's POV "It's beautiful!" I jumped around while screaming in a childish tone. Dad has always told me that my high-pitched childish voice always hurt his ears when I shouted like I just did now. But who cares? After months of wandering around the forests and being out of touch with civilization, a mud house would have looked beautiful to me. But this is not a mud house. It's a goddamn villa. "Shush!" When she saw my father's face, my mother gave him a gentle reprimand. I pouted and ignored her. I turned to my dad and asked innocently. Considering that we have such a beautiful home, why have we been traveling around for so long? I thought he would try to skip the question like he has been skipping it for the past two months. To my surprise, he didn't. He bent down low and kissed me on the forehead. "Don't worry. We're home now. We don't need to run again." He told me in a gentle voice. I looked up at him with big suspicious eyes. I found it a little difficult to become that. Last time, he had said we would soon not need to keep running, but we kept wandering around the bushes. But then, he hadn't said we were home, had he? I nodded. I answered with a big smile, "I love my new home." “We do, too, baby.” Grabbing my head, my father said. "Here, your wolf can develop to its fullest extent and unlock its potential." He added. He stood up abruptly after giving me a nod. “Come on, honey, let's get settled in.” In his words to my mother. My mother scooped me up into her arms and carried me inside. I immediately gasped in astonishment. What can my childish mind do otherwise? The place was exquisite. I would have no trouble imagining I am a princess in trouble here. It looked exactly like a palace. "Dad?" I called. "Yes, darling?" His voice remained patient with me. He had gotten used to my endless questions. “Why did we have to be there and not here if we had this house all along and were just hanging out in the bushes and the forest?” I asked him. He sighed. “I'm not sure how to describe it, dear, but let's just say that the alpha had some difficulty giving us the house.” "But it's ours!" I pouted. "Shush." My mother shut me up.” We will give you the specifics later tonight. okay?” I nodded eagerly, sliding down from my mother's arms to explore the rooms. I saw one that had pink curtains and immediately knew that was mine. It was on the second floor and faced the back garden. I loved it. My mother forced me to eat before I ran off to the park to meet up with other children of my age. After not being in contact with other human beings for almost two months, I was very eager to meet up with other children and learn a thing or two about this home that we have been away from for so long. I had some difficulty finding the pack's park. I had dissuaded my parents from showing me where it was. I did not want other kids to think I was a mummy's pet. But I eventually did. "Hello there," I said, walking up to a girl who was not in the thick of the play going on. "I am Arya. And you?" "Maya." The girl replied nonchalantly. I felt a little put-off. She did not sound enthusiastic about meeting a new person at all. Maybe that's why none of the children there are playing with her. Or maybe she doesn't like them? Why would she not like them? "Who's the meanest kid here?" I asked her. Kids usually love talking about that one kid they hate. I was right. The transformation was rapid. Her eyes shone as she gave me a glance. Oh, the most unpleasant kid? He's the meanest among the most lowly children! Do you get it? His name is Reece, and he's not here. Thank the goddess! Is it clear to you? But if he's here, my goodness, no one here will be having fun. Does this make sense to you? Everyone would be so afraid of getting him upset and that's why we always went back home immediately after he arrived here. Do you get it? And…." Maya continued rambling on and on. My mouth broke out in a grin. I was happy I got her talking. I don't care one bit about the lowly kid because My father once told me no kid can ever beat me no matter how mean he or she is determined. My father said I am indomitable! "Whoa, whoa. Wait…" I cut off the still-rambling Maya. The grin was still on my face. It infected Maya. She started grinning too. Her cheeks flushed a little. Was she embarrassed? "Sorry for going on and on," Maya said, the embarrassed grin still on her face. "But I do hate him! He's so mean!" "Why's he so mean?" Maya looked at me in surprise. Then she seemed to realize something. "I have never seen you around here. You new?" I nodded. She nodded in realization. Maya remarked, "That's why you don't know who the meanest child is and why he's so mean.” "Well, Reece, his father is the alpha. That's why he's so mean. He thinks he is better than us all and should have all the best things." She lowered her voice. “Whether he's present or not, please be careful not to sit on the blue seat in the swing. Alright?" I nodded. "Sure." Not that I really cared for Reece, the alpha's son or not. But I don't want my new friend to think I am a trouble seeker. That would put her off. At that moment, the other kids were forming a circle. It looked like the next play would be fun. "Hey, let's join them?" I asked Maya. "No. My son isn't to join them, according to the beta. I matched his toes the other day. It was an accident." What kind of pack was this? I wondered. Was this the very same pack my parents had grown up in? They had always said it's so pleasant. "Don't worry," I assured Maya. "I will talk to him." I dragged her to the circle, asked around for the beta's son and pleaded with him. He agreed. The play was the best I have had yet. I was just coming from the bushes, so any play would have been enjoyable. But this one was particularly enjoyable. Maya and I and the other kids continued playing till it was very dark. I suddenly excused myself when I realized how dark it was. My parents have warned me never to stay out after dark. I ran home with trepidation. What would they do to me? Mother would scream at me, I was almost sure of that. Father would look at me with such disappointment on his face that it would be better if he shouted at me too. But when I reached home, they were not waiting for me on the porch as I had expected. And the lights were all off. Except for the one in my room. It filtered into the gardens, lighting up the flowers. Have they gone to sleep without me? I opened the front door gently, whispering thanks to the goddess that they had not locked me out. That was when I heard it. My mother's screaming voice and my father's pleading voice. "Alpha, please. Don't kill us. We will leave, we promise…" The words were cut short abruptly. My mother's voice screamed. I instinctively knew what had happened. I whirled around and sprinted out of the door.
