CHAPTER THREE

BASTIEN. I checked the clock on the wall, then the one on my wrist. I was about to dial the phone on my desk when my office door slammed open and the bane of my existence walked in. “Sorry I’m late,” The girl said breathlessly, shrugging off her coat and tossing it on my very expensive ottoman. “My car broke down.” “I don’t care,” I said, pinning her with a bored look. “How long have you been my assistant, Miss Moreau?” She swallowed, but straightened to her full height. “A week, sir.” “Very good,” I drawled, pushing away from my desk and rounding the table to tower over her. She craned her neck to meet my gaze; something in me liked that very much. “And how many times have I warned you about punctuality? I run a very tight ship, here. This isn’t med school.” “Of course, sir.” she nodded shakily, “It won’t happen again.” I stood over her for another moment, unable to help myself from taking her in. She wasn’t much to look at if I was being honest. She was short, with brown hair and brown eyes behind glasses. Whatever curves she had on her were covered by her hideous sweaters. Yet, that face. That resemblance she held for a woman I thought I’d buried long ago. Looking at her brought back all those unfortunate emotions, making my blood boil until I wasn’t sure if I wanted to kiss her, or punch her. “Sir,” she cleared her throat, her cheeks turning bright pink, “Do you need anything else?” I was standing too close. I could hear her heart beating, loud and fast, could practically taste the rich copper of her blood as it flowed through her veins. My gums itched, and for the first time in centuries, I found myself craving the taste of human blood. Her blood. I hurriedly stepped back, turning around to hide my face. “I’m headed to the lab.” I hissed, forcing my fangs back. “You’re staying put until I get back.” “I want to come with you.” “No.” I snarled at her, “And don’t provoke me. Not today.” The girl was taken aback, but she was also stupidly stubborn. I watched her square her shoulders and knew I’d already lost this argument. “With all due respect, sir. You hired me as your personal assistant, I’m sure it includes helping you out with your research as well.” She took a step closer, fire burning in her eyes, “I’m coming with you.” I rubbed the bridge of my nose. If I was capable of a headache, I would be getting one soon. I took her with me to the lab, immediately regretting the decision as soon as we were alone in the quiet of the dark elevator. I stood with my hands in my pockets and kept my gaze fixed ahead, I could feel her gaze burning the side of my head, when I turned to catch her gaze, she hurriedly looked away, her ears burning red. Finally, we got to the lab and I tossed her a white coat. “Wear this, find a corner and stay put.” She opened her mouth to protest, but I shot her a single look, and she immediately kept quiet. We worked in silence for a long moment, until the silence was broken with the sound of glass shattering. “What the f**k is wrong with you?” I hissed in anger. The girl flinched, apologising as she sank down to her knees to pick the shards of the broken glass tube up. “I’m sorry, it slipped from my hand.” She immediately hissed as a piece sliced her palm. “Leave it,” I growled, already crossing the room to get a first aid box. “How hard is it to stay put? You’re getting on my last nerve.” I sank to my knees next to her and immediately froze as the scent of her blood wafted up to my nose. I immediately froze. “It’s not that bad of a cut,” she was saying, holding up the injured palm, but her voice was muted static. The only thing I could see was the bright red blood smearing her palm. I wanted to close the distance between us; my gums itched as my fangs fought to break free. Various images flashed through my head, my teeth in her neck, her brown orbs wide and frightened, Elara in my arms, face pale and bloodless as she bled out on an altar. I struggled to my feet in panic, chest rising and falling rapidly. “Take the box and get out!” I growled, stalking away. I expected her to do as I said and just leave, but of course, the day she did as I said was the day her name was no longer Lena. Instead of her taking the out and leaving, she pushed to her feet and rushed after me. “Sébastien,” she called, the sound of my name in her mouth made me shiver. “You’re pale, are you okay?” She reached out to touch me with that blood-soaked hand, and I lost the last hold I had on my restraint. My vision went blank, and when I came to, I found myself gripping her wrist hard enough to bruise and pressing her flush against a table. She was staring up at me, eyes wide and her mouth parted, her pulse beating fast. I could smell her fear, her blood, and beneath that, the sweet, cloying scent of her arousal. This was turning her on? My barely restrained animalistic control? I could break her in two, and she would enjoy it. “Sébastien,” she gasped, arching against me as I buried my nose in her neck, taking deep lungfuls of her sickeningly sweet scent. And her blood. I groaned against her skin, letting myself taste her. “Sir,” she whimpered softly, arching her neck to give me better access as I raked the tips of my teeth against her skin. My gums ached with the effort it took to keep my fangs in, especially with the way she writhed against me, making those soft, affected noises. I couldn’t help myself, I let my lips cover her skin, and sucked. Hard. Lena made a high-pitched noise beneath me, her body shuddering in my arms as sick pleasure overwhelmed her. I closed my eyes and basked in it, letting it wash over me as I sucked bruises into her skin. “Sébastien…” she moaned softly as I pulled away. We were both panting hard; her lips were red and wet, bitten raw. I had the sudden, irresistible urge to take them in my mouth and see if they were as soft as they looked. But before I could, the door to the lab swung open, and we sprang apart as a voice rang out, “Mr Vale, there’s someone here to see you.” I turned around, and Celine was staring between Lena and me with an odd look. I cleared my throat in a bid to regain my composure. “I’ll be there shortly.” Once she was gone, and it was just the two of us, I fixed my glare back on the girl. “Go home.” I growled, “You’re done here for today.” “But—” “I SAID GO HOME, LENA!!!” And then I stormed out, slamming the door shut behind me.
