The ground gives way beneath us with a sound like stone being torn apart by a god. A jagged line splits open under Adam’s knees. Then another. Then another. The cracks race toward each other, forming a circle around us. Light pours upward through the widening gaps, swirling like a rising storm. Silver. Black. Moon struck. The air changes. The temperature drops so fast it burns. My breath clouds in front of my lips as a cold wind spirals up from the depths, pulling at my clothes and hair, pulling at my skin. Adam shifts his grip on me, gathering me tighter against his chest as the ground splits open fully.
