The sky should have softened by now. Dawn should be stretching pale color across the treetops. Instead, the darkness thickens until it feels like something alive is wrapping around the forest. I tilt my head back, searching for even a single star. Nothing. The clouds shift in slow spirals, black swallowing black. My breath fogs the air even though the night is warm.
