My health took a downward turn because I wasn't eating very well. I treated the distraction of meals as a necessary evil and paid little attention to what it was that filled my stomach. Second semester I moved back into Schutter Hall, a dormitory, to save a few bucks. The proximity of other students helped me assimilate and to a degree forget. When IU accepted me, I immediately responded with a letter of intent, much to the dismay of my parents and siblings. Briefly, the folks threatened to withhold my tuition as blackmail to keep me here, but they accepted my determination to leave and sensed that I needed a change of scenery—although I never told them why.
