As they made their way from the Sub-Temporal Vaults to the Old Bell Tower, they had to navigate through the narrow, hidden passages known as the Gaps, rather than taking a straightforward route through the streets. Jude took the lead, carefully guiding the group through the tight spaces, his hand resting on the Heart-Sync, which was concealed beneath his thick woolen tunic to prevent its warm, amber light from being visible. The journey was more of a crawl than a walk, requiring them to move slowly and cautiously to avoid detection. The city above them groaned. Every sixty seconds, the Great Gear in the Spire released a pressurized hum that vibrated through the stone walls, a reminder that they were moving against the very pulse of the Spire They made their way through an old, abandoned tunnel that used to shoot things through the air, the curved walls made of copper were wet with tiny drops of water. Jude kept stopping every now and then, putting his ear against the metal wall to listen. "Listen, I think something's going on," Jude whispered barely audibly, "the frequency is surging, it seems like a Warden is adjusting the pressure in the sector right above us." They stood still, frozen in time. Aurelia chill of the copper was against her, her shoulder touching Jude's. The darkness was absolute, and all she could hear was the frantic beating of a heart . she couldn't tell if it was his or hers. Without thinking, she reached out with her hand, her fingers brushing against the rough texture of his sleeve until they found his hand. He didn't move or say a word, but his grip tightened around hers, a silent reassurance in the overwhelming blackness. In that moment, his hand was her only anchor, her only sense of security. The darkness seemed to press in around them, making it hard to breathe, but with Jude's hand in hers, Aurelia felt a sense of calm wash over her. She didn't know what was happening, or what would happen next, but with him by her side, she felt like she could face anything. "Ugh, my mallet's banging against my belt and it's making this annoying clinking noise," Kiran muttered in a deep, rumbling voice. "We're going to get caught for sure, Jude. This tube is basically a huge bell, just waiting to give us away." "Come on, calm down. Breathe slowly and let the steam work for you, not against you. Think of the noise like waves , just go with it and let it take you along." As they stepped out of the tube, they found themselves in the Dead Zone, a courtyard located behind the Cathedral. This place was unique because the grass here grew in strange, spiraling patterns, and it seemed like the Spire's blue light didn't touch it. Above them, the Old Bell Tower rose high, its grey stone forming a jagged shape that stood out against the dark obsidian Spire. The tower's presence was striking, and it seemed to loom over them, a reminder of the past. It's really quiet here, you know. The atmosphere feels kind of thick and heavy, like the air is just waiting for something to happen. It's waiting for a moment to happen, a now that will set things in motion. The place, is like a pause in time, where the clock stopped ticking when the Great Synchrony started. That's why they feel the heaviness, like a burden weighing they down . it's all the seconds, minutes, and hours that have passed without being lived, piling up over decades, just waiting to be unleashed. As Jude and Aurelia walked across the courtyard, a low humming noise started to come from the Heart-Sync. The warm, amber light spilled out from beneath Jude''s tunic, filling the space between them. They weren't paying attention to the tower anymore, their eyes were fixed on the way the light seemed to connect them, like a golden thread that shone brightly, even under the watchful gaze of the Spire's blue surveillance beams. The light appeared to be drawing them closer together, creating a sense of intimacy in the midst of the courtyard's. As they approached the old tower, they stopped in front of the huge oak doors, which were all rotten and had holes in them, like they were made of lace. Just as Kiran was about to use his iron crowbar to push the doors open, Hemlock grabbed his arm and pulled him back into the dark shadow of a big stone support, out of sight. "Stow the iron! Look at the gargoyles." Hemlock whispered Way up high, the stone guardians weren't scanning the horizon like they used to. Instead, their heads had been swapped out for Clockwork Sensors . these spinning brass eyes that flashed a steady, hungry blue beat. Warden Prime’s Voice distorted through a rooftop speaker "Scanning Sector 09. Presence detected. Variance: 0.04 seconds. Recalibrating logic-gates. All units... converge on the Silence." Jude's eyes locked onto Aurelia, a mix of fear and determination burning within them. "They've discovered the Gaps," he whispered urgently, his voice trembling with a newfound sense of resolve. "We can't afford to be silent anymore, we have to take drastic action and force the anchor, no matter the cost." "If I act now, it will be like a signal in the darkness, and Magus will spot us from the Spire." "Let him see. He can’t stop a heart that’s already decided to break the clock." Jude confidently muttered The old wooden doors of the tower let out a loud groan as Kiran pushed against them with all his might. The rusty hinges broke with a sharp snap, like the sound of a dry branch cracking. At the same time, the courtyard behind them turned into a scene of chaos. The blue flash of the Warden's warning lights suddenly changed to a bright, fiery red, shining like a warning signal. Warden Prime Voice echoed "Variance detected. Biological stagnation at 100%. Purge the silence!" Three Wardens jumped over the Cathedral wall, their brass limbs making a hissing sound because of too much steam inside. They didn't just run , they moved really fast, their actions quick and jerky, like they were speeding up time. "Kiran, I've found it! The base of the spiral staircase is where it is. You see, the stone with the lily carving on it, that's the Root we've been searching for." Kiran didn't look back. He swung his massive iron mallet, not at a Warden, but at the floor. Each strike sent a shockwave of Standard Time through the tower, trying to c***k the Spire’s hold on the masonry. Clang. Clang. Clang. Hemlock stood ready, gripping a heavy gaff with a sharp hook, and shouted. "I've got the entrance covered, I'll keep those brass-headed guards from getting in! Jude, hurry up and use that glass needle to tap into the core of this building, before we all end up as nothing more than broken clock parts!" A Warden suddenly lunged forward, its sharp hydraulic claw snapping wildly, just inches from Hemlock's face. But the old sailor didn't even flinch instead, he cleverly stepped into the Warden's rhythm, using the machine's own momentum against it, and tripped its delicate copper gears, bringing it to a halt. As the Wardens swarmed the entrance, Aurelia stood in the center of the debris, her hands raised. She wasn't fighting with iron; she was fighting with the Stillness. "Jude... I can’t hold the perimeter! Their frequency is too high. It’s like trying to stop a waterfall with a silk thread!" Jude was kneeling by the lily-stone, his hands trembling as he prepared the Heart-Sync. "Don't shut it down, Aurelia" he urged, "reverse it instead. Give them so much time that they won't be able to keep up with what's happening from one second to the next." Aurelia closed her eyes. She reached for the memory of the vault, the heat of Jude’s hand, the quiet of the tea. She cast the "Undated Sunday" out like a net. The lead Warden suddenly stopped in mid-air, its movements freezing as if time itself had slowed down. Inside, its regulators were frantically sounding alarms, struggling to cope with the extreme conditions. The air around it seemed to thicken, causing its gears to grind and groan as they tried to turn, but were unable to overcome the dense, syrupy resistance. Warden of the South: "Error... Subjective... weight... too... heavy..." The tower trembled violently as a massive blast from a Warden's steam-cannon ripped through the upper stonework, sending dust and crumbling mortar cascading down. In the chaos, Jude quickly shoved the Aethel-Needle into the narrow c***k that Kiran had managed to pry open, the sound of grinding stone and hissing steam filling the air. "Now! Everyone, touch the stone!" Jude alarmed Kiran's mallet slipped from his grasp, falling to the ground. At the same time, Hemlock delivered a powerful kick to a Warden, sending it stumbling backward, and then launched himself toward the center of the action. Meanwhile, Aurelia stretched out her hand, her fingers intertwining with Jude's as they both grasped the glowing glass needle, its light pulsing between them. "Come on, have faith in the weekend!" The Heart-Sync exploded in a blast of amber light, sending a shockwave through the air. This pulse was like a solid wall that slammed into the Wardens, throwing them backward into the courtyard. As they stumbled, their blue visors cracked and shattered, and the soft, gentle light of the moon, which was now setting, took its place. The tower's loud warnings stopped. The red alarms outside got quieter, making a low, annoying hum. The first connection, or "Stitch", between the parts of the Bridge was finally made. Jude's forehead was pressed against the cold stone, his chest heaving as he struggled to catch his breath. Then, he felt a hand on his shoulder, it was Aurelia's. She didn't say a word, but her grip was tight, her fingers shaking with the same mix of adrenaline and fear that was racing through his veins. Hemlock coughed through the dust, "Well, that's definitely one way to make some noise. I'm pretty sure Magus heard that loud and clear, all the way from his obsidian nest." "He finally heard the truth, and now he's aware of everything. We're not concealing ourselves in the shadows anymore, we're creating something new on top of what was hidden" Inside the top of the Spire, it was eerily quiet, like the stillness was more powerful than any loud noise. Magus was frozen in place as his main way of sensing things a intricate network of gold and mercury was destroyed. The shock wasn't something he could hear, it was more like an empty space, a Void. On his strategic map, the Old Bell Tower didn't just disappear from view, it became a kind of hole, a rip in the fabric of his normally perfectly controlled world. The tower's darkness was replaced by a blinding whiteness, like a tear in reality itself. Magus's world, once so synchronized and orderly, was now disrupted, and he was left standing there, paralyzed and disoriented. Magus clutched his chest, where his mechanical heart struggled to find a beat to follow. For a century, he had been the conductor of Oakhaven's symphony. Now, a single, unscripted note had broken his baton. His voice a dying hiss of steam "They... they anchored it. They’ve pinned a dream to the stone. How? How can a boy and a weaver defy the gravity of the Great Mainspring" He stumbled towards the control that would push everything to the limit, his dark skin straining from the force building up inside him. "Warden Prime, I'm warning you don't even think about taking them into custody. Don't bother with the formalities. If this tower is supposed to be a place of silence and solitude, then let's just get rid of it altogether. Tear down the entire district if you have to. I won't rest until I have complete control over every last inch of Oakhaven every single moment of it belongs to me." He let out a loud scream, and suddenly he was hit with a strange feeling, it was like his body was remembering something, a warm and fuzzy sensation that lingered inside him. This was the Heart-Sync, something that wasn't based on reason or logic, but on a memory that he thought he had gotten rid of a long time ago, a lazy Sunday afternoon that he had tried to erase from his mind. In a desperate attempt to get rid of the feeling, he slammed his fist onto the console, but it was too late, the Silence was already spreading, like a disease that was infecting the entire Spire, creeping into its very core. Below, in the smoke and masonry dust of the tower, the Council didn't head for the doors. The courtyard was a sea of crimson sensors and hissing steam cannons. "They’re boxing us in! We can't go out, and we can't stay here. The Spire is vibrating the very air they’re going to shake the tower down!" Hemlock Lamented Jude Looking up into the dark, hollow throat of the belfry "We don't go out. We go Up. The anchor is set! The Bridge isn't a horizontal road yet it’s a vertical slipstream!" "Jude, the roof beams are decaying, if we go up there, we'll just be making it easier for them to spot us and blast us with their cannons." Aurelia muttered "Trust the Aethel-silk, Aurelia! Weave the resonance into the wood. Make the stairs think they’re made of light!" As the first Warden breached the inner sanctum, Jude activated the Heart-Sync’s Overdrive. The amber light didn't just glow; it formed a shimmering, translucent staircase that spiraled up the center of the tower, independent of the crumbling stone. They scrambled upward. Kiran hauled Hemlock by the collar, while Jude kept his hand locked in Aurelia. Every step they took turned into a Moment of Stillness. To the Wardens below, the Council appeared as blurred ghosts, moving through a time-stream they couldn't calculate. A steam-cannon blast tore through the floor they had stood on a second prior, but the Council was already fifty feet above, climbing into the rafters where the old bells hung. They made it to the very top, where they huddled together among the huge, silent bronze bells. The city below was like a grid of angry blue lights. Above them, the Spire towered like a sharp, black needle, its top glowing with Magus's frantic, purple-blue rage. Kiran Gasping, looking down at the shimmering golden path they’d left behind "We’re trapped at the top of a dead tower, boy. What now, We jump" Jude stood at the edge of the belfry, his hair blowing wildly in the wind. "We don't jump, Kiran," he said, "we take a step. The first thread is already in place. Now, all we need to do is find where the next one is waiting for us." Aurelia Looking at the horizon, where the first faint, golden line of the Aethel-Bridge was beginning to manifest against the stars "Look... the mists are responding. The Undated Sunday is calling us." Outside, the Wardens were scaling the outer walls like brass spiders. But as the first claw reached the belfry ledge, Jude and the Council stepped out into the empty air not falling, but walking on a path made of memory and moonlight.
