Chapter 3

As he said that, he wrapped an arm naturally around Eira's waist, his eyes full of indulgence. "She's the one who did wrong. If anyone's getting punished, it should be her. Don't let my honey get upset." Only then did Eira's expression soften a little. "So how are you going to punish her?" Larry thought for a moment, then said, "Since she refuses to give Gavin a child willingly, we'll just have to use some special methods." My heart sank. Before I could even react, Larry had already turned to the bodyguards. "Go get the medicine I prepared." Eira looked confused. "What medicine?" Larry gave her a meaningful smile. "The kind that makes people happy." Eira understood immediately, and her face flushed red. "Don't talk nonsense! Gavin is still here!" Her shy reaction only seemed to excite Larry more. Even his voice turned huskier. "I really want to see what Elly looks like when she gets passionate. Just thinking about it is enough to make me lose control." I felt humiliated and furious. It was also the first time I truly realized just how disgusting Larry was. Just then, the bodyguard at the door came in holding a small bottle of pills. The despair inside me spread in an instant. "Larry, don't make me hate you!" Seeing how red my eyes were, Larry clearly froze for a moment. But Eira spoke before he could. "Isabelle, besides threatening people, what else do you know how to do? You used to treat me like this, and now you're doing the same thing to Larry. You're disgusting." Before she met Larry, Eira had always seemed sensible, grateful, and innocent in front of me. But after joining Larry's company, she changed. She always carried herself like someone who would never bow to power, someone who would rather break than bend. One time, I asked her how work was going. In that same cool tone, she said, "No matter how hard or exhausting it is, I have to rely on myself. I'm not like you. Your parents are rich. Even if you do nothing, you can still live in comfort for the rest of your life. Isabelle, you will never understand what it feels like for people at the bottom to struggle desperately just to claw their way out of the mud." And every single time she said those things, Larry just happened to be there to hear them. Again and again. The way he looked at her changed more and more each time. Now there was more than admiration in his eyes. There was pity too. I did not want to explain myself anymore. I just looked at Eira and asked, "Eira, I supported you for so many years and never once asked for anything in return. Are you really sure you want to repay kindness with betrayal?" Eira's eyes reddened, and suddenly she looked aggrieved. "If you really wanted nothing in return, you would not keep bringing up the fact that you supported me and using it to guilt me! Don't you just want to keep reminding me how far apart we are? I just wasn't lucky enough to be born like you. That doesn't mean I'm beneath you!" Larry lifted a hand and gently wiped away the tears at the corners of her eyes. "Don't feel bad. Once she's pregnant with Gavin's child, she won't be able to act so superior and lecture you anymore." Something inside my chest felt as if it had been violently torn apart. Larry and I had grown up together. I had always thought that even if there was no grand, passionate love between us, we at least still had the bond of childhood sweethearts. But only at that moment did I finally understand. In his heart, I meant less than two casual tears falling from Eira's eyes.
