Chapter Five:
The office was quieter than usual that afternoon, the hum of fluorescent lights almost soothing after a morning of back-to-back meetings. Sia had finished her tasks early, giving herself a few minutes to organize her notes and breathe before Ryu called her into another project discussion.
Her hands were still slightly trembling when she heard the familiar, deliberate click of his heels approaching. Ryu Han appeared at her desk like he always did—perfectly composed, impeccably dressed, and impossibly magnetic. This time, however, there was a subtle smirk tugging at the corner of his lips, a look that made Sia’s chest flutter and her stomach tighten in ways that had nothing to do with fear.
“Miss Sia,” he said, leaning against her desk with casual authority, “I have a few revisions for the presentation. But I think… you could make it much more interesting.”
Sia blinked, confusion mingling with something warmer. “I—I’ll adjust it, sir.” She paused, noticing the way his dark eyes held her gaze a second longer than necessary, the faint curve of his smile suggesting he enjoyed the effect he had on her.
“Don’t just follow the rules,” he continued, leaning closer so that his presence seemed to fill the small space around her. “Show me you can surprise me.” His voice had dropped slightly, smooth and low, sending a shiver down her spine.
Sia swallowed, trying to focus on her laptop screen, but it was impossible with him so close. The faint scent of his cologne—rich, warm, and intoxicating—seemed to cling to her senses, and for a brief moment, she imagined what it would feel like if he weren’t standing across the desk, but beside her, just a little too close. “I… I’ll do my best,” she said, her voice betraying the flutter in her chest.
Ryu straightened, just enough to give her a look that was part teasing, part challenge. “Good. I like it when you take initiative. Don’t disappoint me.” His eyes lingered a moment longer, dark and assessing, and Sia felt heat creep to her cheeks.
Then he did something unexpected. As he moved to adjust the placement of a chart on her laptop screen, his fingers brushed lightly against hers. The contact was fleeting, almost accidental, but it sent an undeniable spark through her. She froze, glancing up at him, only to see that he hadn’t even flinched, his expression unreadable except for that faint, teasing smirk.
“Careful,” he murmured, his tone playful yet edged with authority. “You’re full of surprises… and I like that.”
Sia blinked, startled by the words and the way her pulse had surged. “I… thank you, sir,” she said, keeping her voice steady even though her thoughts were a whirlwind.
As he straightened fully and turned to leave, he paused at the door, glancing over his shoulder. “Keep that focus… and that fire. It’s… appealing.”
The words hung in the air long after he walked away, leaving Sia breathless, cheeks flushed, and mind spinning. She couldn’t tell if it was encouragement, flirtation, or a dangerous mix of both.
Later that evening, Sia met Arya for their usual weekend coffee. They sat on the balcony, the city glittering below, sipping wine and watching cars move like tiny fireflies in the distance.
“He actually… complimented me,” Sia admitted, a mixture of awe and confusion in her voice. “I think he meant it… maybe.”
Arya grinned mischievously. “Oh, so the ice-cold CEO can melt, huh? Admit it—you’re thrilled!”
Sia groaned, spinning her glass in her hand. “I… I don’t know. It’s confusing. He’s infuriating, yet… there’s something else. I can’t stop thinking about it.”
“Something else?” Arya teased, leaning closer. “That’s the fire talking. Admit it—you’re curious. You want to see what’s behind that perfect façade of his.”
Sia’s lips twitched into a reluctant smile. “Maybe. But I can’t let my feelings interfere with work. Not when my family depends on me.”
Arya squeezed her hand gently. “Sia, you’re strong. You’ve been through worse than a difficult CEO. Don’t let anyone, not even Ryu Han, make you forget that. Besides… a little distraction never hurt anyone.”
Meanwhile, Ryu returned to his office, the echo of Sia’s presence lingering in his mind. That fire, that focus—she reminded him of strength he rarely saw in anyone, yet there was a spark that made him curious, dangerously so. He found himself replaying their brief touch at her desk, the way she had reacted, the way her eyes had widened, and the faint tremor in her hands. He knew he shouldn’t notice, shouldn’t allow himself to feel anything beyond professional interest, yet he couldn’t help it.
He paused at his window, city lights sprawling beneath him, and allowed himself a moment of rare vulnerability. He wasn’t supposed to notice her, wasn’t supposed to let her affect him, yet he did. And in the quiet of his office, he realized just how much he wanted to see her again—not just as an employee, but as the woman who had managed, in a single day, to unsettle him in ways no one else had.
The pull between them was growing stronger, subtle yet undeniable. Every glance, every brush of hands, every teasing remark built an unspoken tension neither could ignore.
As Sia drifted to sleep that night, cheeks still warm from the encounter, she couldn’t help but smile at the thought of Ryu’s words. For the first time, she realized that beneath his cold, commanding exterior was someone who could provoke feelings she didn’t yet understand—but was eager to explore.
And somewhere across the city, Ryu Han stared at the skyline, thinking the same thing.
